Arguing

I would like to thank you for a civil discussion even though we disagree on certain issues. On the city name, may I suggest for you the long discussion I had with Michael a while ago. It all started from me moving "Dnipropetrovs'k" to "Dnipropetrovsk" and got to a much wider issue. See this and to the end of the page. After some time, Oleh Petriv added some comments in the middle of the discussion (you could see from time stamps) but basically we gave this issue a good once-over that ended up with the current state (it was almost just two of us in Ukrainian topics at the time, now the situation is better thanks god). One of the results of our discussion was the move of all Oblast center articles except Kiev and Odessa to their Ukrainian names. From that moment on I keep an eye on them. I hope you will find this reading worthy even though it is somewhat longish.

On Ukrainian-Canadian issue, what's your opinion on the Canadian Ukrainian article. Do you have anything to expand it with? Cheers, --Irpen 22:36, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

The flavor of the word "take"

Hi! I a have a question to you as to a native English speaker. Does the word "take" assume any negative flavor in English when applied to war events like: "taking control over a certain territory", "taking positions", "take a city" etc. Why do you prefer "reclaim"?

Ukrainian Dance

Привіт. Я зробив категорію commons:Category:Ukrainian dance. Зараз там мої власні фотографії з концерту ансамблю Вірського у Донецьку та з фестивалю етнічної музики у Карпатах. Можливо щось з того буде цікавим для використання у статтях про українські танці. Якісь фото з концерту не дуже добра, було недостатнє освітлення, але я подивився, що на офіційному сайті не набагато кращі фото. Також я розмістив там зображення марки й монети, що були випущені до 100-ліття Павла Вірського. Щасти. --Yakudza

Hi there! I only noticed the Ukrainian Dance category the other day, and was surprised that there was still so much happening on the subject. I'm just glad it's being represented. Rusyns

Привіт. Маю деякі коментарі щодо редагувань статті Rusyns, англійською сформулювати це складно, тому пишу тут. На мою думку чисельність русинів наведена тобою у статті з сайту є певною мірою гіпотетичною. Ось що пише з цього приводу Пол Маґочі (англійською теж саме українською) - наведу деякі фрагменти з розділу The Problem of Nomenclature

It is important to keep in mind what is meant by the term Rusyn. Traditionally, the name Rusyn or its local variant Rusniak has been used by the East Slavic inhabitants of the Carpathian region to describe themselves. However, by the twentieth century, in particular its second half, the historic names Rusyn/Rusniak were replaced by others, such as Ukrainian in Soviet Transcarpathia and the Presov Region of Slovakia, or Lemko in Poland. ...

In other words, some people will say that Rusyn is simply the older historic name for Ukrainian, and that Lemko is a regional name of Ukrainian, while others are convinced that the names Lemko or Rusniak are regional forms for Rusyn which, in turn, designates a people that is distinct from the Ukrainian and every other surrounding nationality. It should be noted that the estimated figure of 1.2 million Rusyns given above refers to all people of the same linguistic and ethnographic origin, regardless of how they designated themselves in documents such as internal identity papers, passports, or decennial censuses. Our concern here will be primarily with the present-day Rusyn movement or with that portion cf the group (the precise numbers are unknown) that considers Rusyns to comprise a distinct people.

Зрозуміло, і Пол Маґочі у наведеному фрагменті це також визнає, що у наш час русинами себе називають дуже невелика кількість з названих 1.2 мільйонів людей. Це в першу чергу русини Воєводини і Словаччини і деяка кількість закарпатців. Як свідчить останній перепис це 10 тис. мешканців Закарпатської області. Поза Закарпаттям в Україні русинський рух абсолютно відсутній. Таким чином, на мою думку варто навести в таблиці офіційні дані переписів (українські, словацькі, сербські та хорватські), як це зроблено в таблицях інших народів (дивись наприклад Ukrainians), а не приблизну і дуже умовну цифру з сайту www.carpatho-rusyn.org --Yakudza 21:47, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the note Yakudza, and forgive me but I can only write in cyrillic fonts on my laptop, which currently is acting up, so I'll repond in english:
I am no apostle of Magocsi, and very rarely if ever agree with him. I do however, know plenty of people that identify as Rusyn, Rusnak, Lemko, Hutsul, etc. and not with any current nation-state, and can only empathize with having one's language mocked and one's history marginalized. I frankly felt wary that my own edit inserted too many references to Ukraine. In general, I would like for this article to be as balanced as I hope others would treat articles relating to Ukraine, which in general gets short shrift on WP.
As for disputing the numbers stated: please go ahead and include as many facts as possible. I only grabbed that particular population total because an amount was unnecessarily absent from the infobox, and I googled to find a place-holder.--tufkaa 22:28, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
