Anthony was elected as the Federal Member for Holt in a by-election in 1999, and re-elected in 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2010.


Anthony was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister from November 2007 until 14 September 2010. In this role, Anthony oversaw government legislation on the Prime Minister’s behalf to manage the Government’s agenda. Through this role Anthony had specific responsibility for the Australian Institute of Family Studies, an independent government agency, and the National Security Science and Technology Unit, a branch within PM&C. Anthony was the Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister from November 2007 until 14 September 2010. In his role, Anthony was tasked with oversight of government legislation / Strategy and agenda on the Prime Minister’s behalf. Through this role Anthony had specific responsibility for the National Security Science and Technology Unit within Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and liason with the National Security Adviser.
Anthony was also the Parliamentary Secretary for Trade from February 2009 until 14 September 2010.


Following the 2010 Election, Mr Byrne was appointed as the Chair of the Statutory Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security. Following the 2013 Election, Mr Byrne was appointed as the Deputy Chair of the Statutory Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security.
Anthony was also the Parliamentary Secretary for Trade from February 2009 until 14 September 2010. In this role, Anthony worked closely with the Minister for Trade to grow Australia’s economy and build a more prosperous Australia, creating more opportunities for all Australians.
Anthony was born in Adelaide and spent his early childhood in the goldfields of Kalgoorlie, where he was educated at local schools and through the School of the Air.


Anthony is married with two children.
Anthony has served on a number of parliamentary committees, including the Joint Parliamentary Foreign Affairs and Trade Committee and the Joint Statutory Committee on Intelligence and Security.


Following the 2010 Election, Mr Byrne was appointed as the Chair of the Statutory Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security. He is also a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade.

Anthony Michael Byrne (born 1 December 1962) is an Australian politician and an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives since November 1999, representing the Division of Holt, Victoria.

Political career

Anthony was elected as the Federal Member for Holt in a by-election in 1999, and re-elected in 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010 & 2013.

Anthony was the Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister from November 2007 until 14 September 2010.
