The St. Mary's Railroad was originally founded around 1865 as the St. Marys and Kingsland Railroad and later became the Atlantic, Waycross and Northern Railroad. In 1918 the railroad was sold to the Southern Fertilizer and Chemical Comapny in Savannah, Georgia then sold again in 1938 to St. Mary's Kraft Corporation. During one of these sales, the railroad gained the St. Mary's Railroad name. In about 2000, the railroad was purchased by the Durango Paper Company and the railroad was planned to be renamed the Durango Railroad. Apparently the new railroad was never formed and the St. Mary's Railroad continues in existence under the ownership of the Durango Paper Company.
The only connection to other railroads is to the First Coast Railroad at Kingsland.
