Baseball championship series
The 2014 World Series will be the 110th edition of Major League Baseball 's championship series . The best-of-seven playoff will involve the National League champion San Francisco Giants and the American League champion Kansas City Royals . The start date of October 21, 2014 is the first scheduled Tuesday start day for a World Series since 1990 .
The Royals will have home field advantage for the series as a result of the American League's 5–3 victory in the All Star Game at Target Field in Minneapolis , Minnesota on July 15. The Royals swept a three game series with the Giants in Kansas City from August 8–10, winning 4–2, 5–0, and 7–4.
This is just the second World Series in history to pit two wild card teams against one another, with the other time being the 2002 World Series between the Giants and the Anaheim Angels . It is the first World Series to involve a team (let alone two) that played in the additional wild card game instituted in 2012. Consequently, the World Series winning team is guaranteed to set the record for most postseason victories in a single postseason with 12. Additionally, this is the first World Series where both teams played in a play-in game (whether it is the wild-card game since 2012, or a tie breaker from 1995-2011) since the Division Series was added in 1995. It will be the fifth postseason meeting between a California team and Missouri team in 2014.

Broadcasting
The World Series will start on a Tuesday instead of Wednesday like in previous years. This will avoid a game on Thursday, generally a big day of TV viewing, where the series would face stiff competition from Thursday Night Football , ESPN College Football Thursday Primetime , and various popular primetime entertainment shows. The change also means that the series only has to compete with the NFL on at most one night (Sunday) instead of three (Thursday, Sunday and Monday).
Fox will televise the series in the United States with Joe Buck , Tom Verducci and Harold Reynolds calling the action. Reynolds and Verducci replace longtime color commentator Tim McCarver , who retired following the 2013 season .
