Goldstein, Hill & West Architects (GHWA) is a New York City-based architecture firm dedicated to the creation of the highest quality, multi-use buildings. GHWA is a collaboration of design professionals deeply experienced in the planning and design of high-rise residential and hospitality buildings, retail structures, and multi-use complexes. Together, the team has designed many of the most prominent structures in the New York metropolitan area.
Alan Goldstein, L. Stephen Hill and David West, the company’s founders, have a legacy of excellence in design stretching back over 25 years. The GHWA team has the vision and skills necessary to create bold solutions that respond to the urban environment. They are market sensitive, pragmatic and attuned to the forces that drive successful development. Its staff of more than 100 is well suited to meet the rigorous demands and schedules of the development process, while allowing for the personal participation of the partners on all projects.
Current clients include such well known entities as Extell Development Company, The Witkoff Group, The Trump Organization, Silverstein Properties, Tishman Speyer Properties, and The Lightstone Group.
Partners
Alan Goldstein, AIA
As one of the firm's co-founders, Alan draws on 40 years of professional experience in planning, designing and managing distinguished projects for our clients. His ability to create beautiful layouts within the most complex of building shapes and structures has been a hallmark of his career and has led to collaborations with such well known architectural firms as Herzog & de Meuron, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, Studio Daniel Libeskind, and COOKFOX. His design sensibility and unique capacity to effectively integrate structural and mechanical systems within his designs have been integral factors in the ongoing success of our client’s projects.
Alan is also well recognized within the architectural community for his understanding and knowledge of the New York City Building Code and has served on various technical committees established by the Real Estate Board of New York and the New York City Department of Buildings to help bring about revisions and updates to the New York City Construction Code.
Alan has worked with many of New York’s prominent developers including Silverstein Properties, The El-Ad Group, The Naftali Group, Alexico, Toll Brothers, The Milstein Organization, Glenwood Management Corp., The Continuum Company, CBSK Ironstate, Atlantic Realty Development Corporation, JD Carlisle Development, Red Apple Real Estate and Tishman Speyer Properties.
Prior to establishing GHW Architects, Alan was a partner at Costas Kondylis and Partners. LLP and a member since its inception in 1989. He received his degree from the City College of New York School of Architecture in 1972 and has been a licensed architect since 1976.
L. Stephen Hill, AIA
During his career spanning more than 25 years Stephen Hill has made an outstanding contribution to the skyline of Manhattan. His work has included a wide array of designs in a variety of building types including high rise residential towers, mixed use hotel / residential / retail projects, mid rise, low income and luxury apartment buildings, historic renovations and challenging adaptive re-use projects. Additional project types include commercial office space and private residences.
Among Stephen’s recent projects are 151 Maiden Lane for Fortis Property Group and One Riverside Park, The Rushmore and The Aldyn for Extell Development Company. His earlier projects included The Heritage, 220 Riverside Boulevard, 200 Riverside Boulevard, 180 Riverside Boulevard and 160 Riverside Boulevard for The Trump Organization, Hudson Waterfront, 33 West End Avenue for Atlantic Development. Other noteworthy projects include The Aston, the Acadia, The Caroline, One Nashua Street in Boston, The Remi, and the renovation of the Plaza Hotel.
Stephen co-founded Goldstein Hill & West Architects, LLP to provide clients with an architectural firm that is focused on design excellence in highly functional buildings. His experience in the design and technical development of residential buildings has been the foundation for his career.
Prior to establishing GHW Architects, Stephen was a partner at Costas Kondylis and Partners, LLP. He is a graduate of Pratt Institute, has NCARB certification and is licensed in several states.
David West, AIA
David West has over 30 years of architectural experience and is highly regarded within the industry. His clients have included numerous leading New York firms and institutions such as The Lightstone Group, The Chetrit Group, Silverstein Properties, The Moinian Group, El-Ad Group, Avalon Bay Properties, Jack Resnick & Sons, The Related Companies, Fisher Brothers, and The Trump Organization.
As a founding partner of GHWA, David has been directly responsible for projects including The Moinian Group's 605 West 42nd Street, The Lightstone Group's 363 and 365 Bond Street, 221 West 29th Street (CBSK Ironstate) and the 6 building master plan development of the former Mary Immaculate Hospital site in Jamaica, Queens by Chetrit Group. He has also been design partner in charge of the Reade / Chambers condominium at 71 Reade Street and penthouses.
Mr. West is also one of New York City's premiere zoning experts. Over the course of his career he has conducted thousands of feasibility studies and has been involved with nearly 100 completed projects, primarily in the metropolitan area. He has a unique blend of knowledge of both the pre-development process and residential building design which enables him to provide the most creative and practical solutions to the development community in New York City. David has extensive background in land use approvals including the ULURP process, Variances and New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission approvals. He has presented numerous projects at public hearings, community boards and to city agencies. He is frequently involved in projects from the earliest stages of land assembly. This gives him a unique perspective into the practical aspect of various development solutions. His work in this area dovetails with that of his partners and staff so that GHWA’s projects receive the most comprehensive expertise available in New York City.
Prior to establishing GHW Architects, Mr. West was a Partner at Costas Kondylis and Partners, LLP. He has been practicing architecture in New York City since the mid-1980s and has worked with an array of firms including Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates and John Harding Architects. He received his degree in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley and has been a licensed architect since 1991. He has given numerous lectures and participated on panels at such institutions as the AIA, New York City Department of City Planning, Real Estate Board of New York, New York University. and the Columbia University School of Real Estate.

Whitehall Interiors NYC Launch
In February of 2014, Goldstein, Hill & West Architects and its partners announced the launch of Whitehall Interiors NYC, an affiliated interior design firm focused on the creation of beautiful and functional spaces for residential and commercial properties. Whitehall’s seasoned team of design professionals specialize in the design of residential living and common spaces, commercial offices and lobbies, and hospitality interior projects for new and existing buildings throughout the city. The firm has already made its mark on a number of prominent projects in Manhattan.
