Early years
At Grandview High School (Idaho), he practiced track, eight-man football and basketball.
Woolsey received a track scholarship to Boise State University, but eventually made his way to the football team, where he became a starter at safety and received All-Big Sky honors in 1974, after recording 72 tackles, six interceptions and leading his team in punt returns. In track he set school records in the 220-yard dash, the 440-yard dash and the spring and mile relay teams. Also ran a 9.6 100-yard dash and a 6.2 60-yard dash.

He missed four pre-season games with a knee injurie, but recovered to start 11 games and register 59 tackles and 4 interceptions.
