Raheja Developers Limited, (RDL), formerly Raheja Developers Private Limited, is an Indian real estate development company with its headquarters in Delhi, India, and was incorporated in 1990 by Navin Raheja.
It has recently been in the news because the Prime Minister of India's Office has ordered a probe against irregularities in Gurgaon housing project named Raheja Atharva. In addition, Forbes India also wrote of Raheja Developers indulging in Strategic lawsuit against public participation to stifle criticism of its business practices.
Forty three (43) buyers of Raheja Atharva residential project have also filed a lawsuit against Raheja Developers in the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission with case numbers CC/250/2014, IA/4928/2014, IA/4929/2014, IA/5218/2014 and IA/7869/2014. The case is ATHARVA TOWERS OWNERS ASSOCIATION vs. RAHEJA DEVELOPERS LTD, and the relevant documents and audio recordings have now been made publicly available by the Raheja Atharva Owners Association.
Operation Black Ninja
Raheja Developers were named in a sting operation of Indian black money by investigative portal Cobrapost. The apex body Central Board of Direct Taxes has ordered a probe by investigation units of the Income Tax department against Raheja Developers, and 34 other developers caught in the Cobrapost sting. Raheja Developers Ltd were also target of a tax raid by Indian Income Tax authorities in Feburary 2010, and tax evasion worth 800 million Indian Rupees was unearthed at that time.
DDA Contract
In 2009 Raheja won a contract to rehabilitate the slums at Kathputli Colony in Shadipur, where the company would build 2,800 flats for the economically depressed section of the area and receive 10% of the land for commercial use. The company was the focus of criticism in 2014 after a candidate for the Aam Aadmi Party alleged that the contract was a scam created by the Delhi Development Authority and the company. The party further alleged that the contract was a way to give the company prime real estate at a low cost under the guise of assisting the slum dwellers, who state that they were forcibly evicted from their homes.
Development partners
Raheja Developers works with contractors like Aedas, Callison, Lessard, Meinhardt, WSP, Shapoorji-Pallonji, L&T etc. Two of its Joint development projects are in collaboration with Tata group. It also own two Joint Venture Construction companies in India; Arabtec- India Limited (Arabtec being the largest construction company in UAE and have the credentials of building Burj Khalifa- tallest building in the world); and ECC).
