The January 2015 Shebaa farms incident was a missile attack by Hezbollah militants against an Israeli military convoy in the Israeli-occupied Shebaa farms, which resulted in the deaths of at least two Israeli soldiers. A Spanish UN peacekeeper was also killed although the cause of his death has yet to be determined. According to Hezbollah the attack was carried out by "Heroic Martyrs of Quneitra" Unit, as a response to January 2015 Mazraat Amal incident. As confirmed by Israeli military, the incident left seven Israel soldiers injured.

Background

The incident occurred after Israeli airstrike on Syrian army artillery positions which was in retaliation for rockets launched at the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Hezbollah claimed that the attack was a response to the recent Israel's air raid in Syria's Quneitra.

Aftermath

According to the Robert Tait in The Telegraph, Israel stood on the brink of all-out conflict with Hezbollah by preforming air and ground strikes against it in retaliation to January 2015 Shebaa farms incident.

Reactions

  •  Israel — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu laid the blame on Iran for the attack, saying "For some time, Iran – via Hezbollah – has been trying to establish an additional terrorist front against us from the Golan Heights. We are taking strong and responsible action against this attempt." He added "those behind today’s attack will pay the full price."
  •  United States — The United States "strongly condemned" Hezbollah's attack and called it "a blatant violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701." State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said "We support Israel's legitimate right to self defense."
