Misplaced Pages:Misplaced Pages Signpost/Navigation
Submission deadline: Error: first parameter cannot be parsed as a date or time.! Publication scheduled for late Wednesday. Once all tasks are complete, editors-in-chief Gamaliel, Go Phightins!, or publication manager Pine will complete the publication process.
Notices for contributors and interested editors
- Interested in Signpost matters? Have a concern to share? Possibly want to become a regular or irregular contributor? Try finding us on IRC at #wikisignpost , the best way for Signpost writers to connect. Or, use the talk page. To learn more about how we operate, see our content guidance page.
- Got a news tip to share? Send it down our grapevine.
- Interested in contributing an irregular article or a special column, such as an interviews, op-ed, or special report, to the Signpost? Great! See our content guidelines for more details, and submission instructions from there.
- Interested in joining the Signpost full-time? Superlative! See our content guidelines for more details on positions and openings.
- Our current standard weekly schedule:
- Thursday–Sunday: start. Start all pages that are to be included in the next edition, either on-wiki or in Google Docs. Please note that "News and notes", "In the media", and the "Arbitration report" are typically drafted in the latter, but suggestions for them are always welcome through our suggestions page. Note that Featured content, due to using a weekly schedule based on WP:GO, will not have a finalized content list until the Sunday (UTC) starts, and will thus usually be a little bit behind the others at this point.
- Monday: draft. A rough outline of topics to be covered should be in place by the middle of Monday, so that if a regular reporter is unavailable, the editor can find a replacement for that week.
- Tuesday, early Wednesday: mature versions. Aim to have reasonably mature drafts of all pages for comments by the managing editors, fellow journalists, and other interested editors. Signpost editors recommend any structural changes, reductions in length, expansions in scope, necessary coordination between pages, postponement to subsequent issue.
- Wednesday: finish! Last-minute tweaks and copy-editors go through the drafts; publication in the evening. However, due to its prominent position at Portal:Featured content, the Signpost cannot publish if every single section of the Featured Content report isn't finished, and this section can't even really be started until Sunday mornings. Please pitch in if Featured Content is falling behind.

Ideas
This space is for editors sharing internal ideas about topics or issues the Signpost should focus on or find writers to address, but for which reports or proposals have not yet been drafted. Items here are automatically transcluded to the opinion and special desks so that contributing editors may be aware of our current editorial focus.
- Gender ratio: This month is WikiWoman's month and a lot of scrutiny is being placed across the project on the gender gap. We will summarize the state of play in our end-of-March issue, with a special report on the gender ratio currently in draft.
- Copyright: How overly strict copyright limits are hurting Wikimedia contributors? Alternatively, how Wikimedia contributors' copyrights are violated on a daily basis?
- Resource exchange: An interview with the people who help content creators at the Resource Exchange.
- Public release I've seen a couple of stories about major releases of materials into the Creative Commons of large numbers of literary and scholarly works in the languages of India, specifically Kannada and Tamil, thanks to the efforts of Wikipedians. Perhaps a talk with some of the participants or an overview of these kinds of efforts?
- Wikimedia Ukraine: Possible follow-up with Wikimedia Ukraine on editing WP in the midst of war? (see previous coverage)
- Guerrilla Skepticism: Guerrilla Skepticism on Misplaced Pages is still a hot topic amongst proponents of alternative medicine and science. This seems ripe for a news feature or perhaps an interview with Susan Gerbic.

Will copyedit this and set up this next one tomorrow.
- Sounds good. Thanks, Adam. Go Phightins! 00:29, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
@Adam Cuerden: @Xanthomelanoussprog: @Hafspajen: @Crisco 1492: @WPPilot: @Jonesey95: Can someone give us an update in the next few hours about when this will be finished? Thank you. Gamaliel (talk) 16:07, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- It's not ready for copy-editing. I'll be happy to copy-edit when it is ready. I have added it to my watchlist. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:38, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- Most or all of the guff is in; needs links to authors and articles added. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 18:58, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- We're going to publish at midnight UTC. If they aren't in by then we will publish as is. Gamaliel (talk) 19:50, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- This section ought to be scripted. How do you extract featured bits right now? Copy-paste and then format? ResMar 20:49, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- Yes (groan) I'm stopping- got a painful shoulder. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 21:16, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

- Going to have to add doing something about that to the to-do list. WP:GO is updated manually, as well, holy smokes... ResMar 22:26, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
Hafspajen and I are running into edit conflicts while trying to whip this thing into shape. It would be easier if there were section edit links so that we could work on separate sections, but I do not see any. Does anyone know why I don't see section edit links on this page? I see them on all other pages, obviously. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:42, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- Appart from minor flaws ready. Hafspajen (talk) 00:40, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
- Hafspajen: Well done! Still needs fixing: "from through " and "TKTKTK". I will proceed with copy edits. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:53, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
- Shit. Hafspajen (talk) 01:02, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry, ear infection knocked me out. Adam Cuerden 01:45, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Jonsey95:: This is because all Signpost stories and drafts implement the
__NOEDITSECTION__ magic word, which removes section links. This is done because we don't encourage post-publication edits to Signpost stories, and since we don't want to force people to have to embed that into the article after drafting drafts don't get edit links either. We have a template for edit conflicts that's effectively never seen use. It would be a good idea to implement a warning into the draft template that's autogenerated at the tops of drafts. I think we've discussed the problem of edit conflicts before but it's just never happened enough to justify the effort we'd need to make to manage them... ResMar 01:48, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Regular responsibilities
In addition to once-off and irregular features contributed on an ad hoc basis, the Signpost has a number of regular reports (published on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis) for which experienced contributors tend to claim responsibility. This responsibility entails ensuring the report in question is consistently well-written and submitted before deadline, which in turn involves selecting the stories to be covered, managing the writing of the report (often contributing most of the content themselves, or recruiting other reporters to do so), and communicating with the newsroom to keep editors informed of developments. While all articles are subject to final review by the editor-in-chief (or managing editors), the regular reporter of a feature typically determines its direction and focus.
The Signpost is always looking for new reporters, so if you are interested in contributing to a given feature, contact the reporter listed as responsible for it below, add yourself to the "Contributors" column of the feature, or simply go right ahead and edit the draft article. If there is no reporter listed as responsible for a given feature, interested editors with experience contributing to the report and who feel up to the task can assume responsibility for it. If a regular reporter is unavailable or no draft for the next issue is listed above, any editor should feel free to write it that week.
