The competition, which is organised by the Portuguese Volleyball Federation, was called Honor Division (Divisão de Honra) in 1983–84 and 1986–88. Between 1997 and 2011, the is was formed a League divided into two different series, A1 and A2. Since 2014-15 season, the competition's champions is called Elite Champion, while the First Division Champion title is disputed between the 4 loosers of the Play-off first round.
