The Battle of Bint Jbeil started on July 25 2006, when Israeli Defense Forces failed to take the town it regarded as a "Hezbollah stronghold". Heavy gun battles between soldiers from the Golani Brigade and Hezbollah guerrillas took place. Some of the shooting was taking place at point-blank range, in homes, and in courtyards.

"The aim of the operation was to find and engage Hezbollah guerrillas and destroy their stores of arms. ... The IDF's modus operandi in southern Lebanon in recent days has sparked great debate among all ranks of the army." (haaretz, Eight IDF soldiers ..) Military experts currently discuss whether the outcome of this and similar operations can be noted as e.g. "failed to take", or whether this type of operation rather represents a commando-style "aggressive patrolling campaign" to destroy local fixed ambush installations and to hunt down rocket-launching capacities. As the neutalizing of launching capacities is a self-explainatory target, the demolishing of fixed ambush infrastructure is seen as a preparing of the ground for an effective accomplishing of a likely-to-be-deployed international peace-keeping mission in Southern Lebanon.

Israel confirmed nine of its soldiers died in the battle, while two died the day before. Dozens of Golani Brigade soldiers were evacuated into Israel.
