Robert William Cumberbatch (1821 - 1876) was born in Tunbridge Wells.
He was the father of Henry Arnold Cumberbatch and both men held the post of Consul General in Turkey.
Robert William Cumberbatch was Consul General from 1864 to 1876 (he died in office in Smyrna).
His grandson was Henry Carlton Cumberbatch, his great-grandson is actor Timothy Carlton, and his great-great-grandson is the actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
His father was Abraham Parry Cumberbatch (1784 - 10 October 1840), and wife (13 April 1819) Caroline Chaloner (2 October 1788 - ).
Cumberbatch was married twice. In 1843 he married Ellen Lloyd in Winkfield, Berkshire, and in 1853 he married Louisa Grace Hanson in Constantinople, Turkey.
Cumberbatch went to Constantinople in June 1845 as secretary to his half-brother Abraham Carleton Cumberbatch and became Acting Second Consul. He was appointed Consul at Berdiansk, Sea of Azoff, on 12 January 1858.
