Roxanne Pallett (born 26 December 1982 in Carlisle, Cumbria) is an British actress and singer. She's most famous for playing the role of Jo Sugden in ITV soap opera Emmerdale from 2005–08. She has won acclaim for numerous stage roles in the theatre and has starred in several films since leaving the soap opera she began her career in.

Early life

Pallett was born and brought up in Currock, Carlisle, Cumbria by her mother and grandmother. Her maternal grandfather was Italian whom she gets her olive skin and dark eyes from. Her father left before she was born. She now has no other family except for her Mother Monica.

Pallett lost her home in a house fire age 16, and a couple of months later, her grandmother, who raised her, died.

Educated at Robert Ferguson Primary School and Trinity School, she then graduated with a BA Honours degree in Media and Cultural Studies, majoring in Film Studies, from Liverpool John Moores University. Pallett studied at the Manchester School of Screen Acting on weekends, and began auditioning for acting roles outside her studies.

Career

In her last year at university, Pallett co-formed girl band Urban Angel, writing songs for them with production and management by ex-East 17 member and Ivor Novello award winner Tony Mortimer. After landing a deal with a record label, Pallett spent a year developing her music in London and co-creating a TV show that she would be later left out of due to management conflict.

In 2005, Pallett auditioned for several roles in Emmerdale. After some final callbacks and workshop based auditions, the producers saw huge potential and asked her to play the feistier role of Jo Stiles, a role they were still writing. Pallett won critical acclaim for her major domestic violence storyline in 2008–2009. In August 2008, Pallett became the public face of the Early Warning Signs campaign for UK domestic violence charity Refuge, that urges young women to look out for early signs where a partner may turn violent in a relationship. During her 130 shows and three years on Emmerdale, Pallett was nominated for several awards as Sexiest Female, Best Storyline, and Best Actress at The British Soap Awards 2007, 2008, 2009, the Inside Soap Awards, and TV Quick Awards 2008.

In November 2005, Pallett showed the nation she could really sing and won Celebrity Stars in Their Eyes as Gloria Estefan. In January 2006, she appeared in the ITV entertainment singing show Soapstar Superstar, finishing fourth in January 2006, and raising over £70,000 for her supported charity the Eden Valley Hospice Jigsaw Appeal. Pallett has fronted several front covers in profiled modelling features in national magazines Closer, Reveal, Now, Sugar, Mizz, Hello and OK. Pallett regularly topped the 'sexiest' poll awards, cementing her as one of the 100 Most Sexiest Women in the World by FHM in 2006. Roxanne embraced the pin up status brought on by her soap role and landed photoshoots for Loaded and Maxim, where she fronted both international covers (July 2008 and May 2009).

In 2007 Rosa Roxanne Pallett, a deep red hybrid rose, was named after Pallett and launched at the 2007 Southport Flower Show by Cheshire-based grower C&K Jones.

After leaving Emmerdale, Pallett took part in the fourth series of ITV's Dancing on Ice, which began on 11 January 2009 with professional partner Daniel Whiston; the couple made headlines for the risque move The Headbanger. Pallett then went on the Dancing on Ice Bolero Anniversary UK Tour 2009. Scheduled to play the lead role in 2009 Christmas pantomime Cinderella at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle upon Tyne, she understandably had to bow out after 3 weeks of starting performances following the sudden and tragic death of her best friend.

In 2010, Pallett took roles in the film Lake Placid 3, her Hollywood debut, and filmed a guest role for the BBC's Casualty. She also took to the stage as the lead in the UK 1950's jukebox musical Rock Around The Clock, making her professional stage debut, which toured the country until September 2010. She then filmed a role in the British production Billy, playing WPC Hannah Reed opposite Sean Pertwee.

In September 2010, Pallett toured with Eve Ensler's famous stage show Vagina Monologues, opposite Nikki Sanderson and Sue Jenkins. Pallett won rave reviews having starred as the female lead (Teena Satin) in the rep theatre run of Satin 'N' Steel at the Oldham Coliseum Theatre, from 14 April through 7 May 2010, directed by Joyce Branagh. The two-hander play also starred Matt Healy.

In 2012 Pallett surprised her audience by playing 17 year old troubled school girl Shelby Dixon in BBC's Waterloo Road, a role that was ten years younger than the actress herself in real life and then guest starred in Casualty as the Keeley Hyatt.

2012 was a huge year for Pallett when she was cast as the lead role of Sarah McColl in British film 'Devil's Tower', playing the lead role of Sarah, opposite Jason Mewes and Francis Ruffelle. Pallett then began filming an urban comedy for Kaleidoscope Pictures, 'It's A Lot' playing the quirky college misfit Louise. The film was cinema released Nov 2013.

From 20 December 2012 until 11 May 2013, Pallett played the iconic all American sweetheart Janet Weiss in the 40th anniversary UK touring production of Richard O'Brien's Rocky Horror Show.

In June 2013 Roxanne Pallett won rave reviews for her comedic role on stage as Shelley in Ladies' Day for The Royal Court, Liverpool.

September 2013 Pallett admitted taking a couple of months out of work to have long overdue surgery on her right hand and arm for carpal tunnel syndrome, which she had suffered with for a year and has admitted she still suffers with, despite the surgery. She joined boyband Blue on their UK tour to perform Too Close with them in October 2013 during her rehabilitation from the surgery on her hand.

In 2014 Pallett began filming a new British film The Violators in Merseyside UK and was then confirmed for a role in the 20th Century Fox horror film Wrong Turn 6, for which she began filming in March 2014. Wrong Turn 6 premiered at London's Leicester Square Fright Fest in Oct 2014 and was also screened at Fox.

Most recently she has been working with the BAFTA acclaimed playwright John Godber on his play 'On The Piste' which toured theatres in the UK. Pallett declined offers for celebrity shows in favour of staying focused and dedicated to her love of theatre and once again, won rave reviews for her comedic performance.
