Al-Gammal learned English and French in a private school. In 1936, his father died leaving Al-Gammal's older brother Samy responsible for the family, who moved the family to Cairo. There, he was a careless student who never cared much for his studies, so his family decided to enroll him in the intermediate school of commerce where he was astonished by the British and impressed by their struggle against the onslaught of the Nazis. Al-Gammal became an ], learning English so fluently as to effect a british accent.

He learned English and French in a private school. In 1963, his father died leaving the big brother "Samy" responsible for the family, then the whole family moved to Cairo where a new chapter of Raafat's life began.

Raafat's character wasn't a responsible character: he was a careless student who never cared much for his studies, so his family decided to roll him in the intermediate school of commerce where he was astonished by the british and impressed by their struggle against the onslaught of the Nazi. And because he who loves a society tries to learn everything about it, Refaat learnt English very well, and copied the british accent. He also learnt French very well. And these were the first blocks in buliding the most famous Egyptian spy ever.


He graduated in 1946 and applied for a job as an accountant in an oil company working in the although there were so many people who applied for this job He was choosen probably because he knows both ] and ] then he was fired as he was accused of stealing money from the company. He moved from one job to another and eventually he worked as an assitant for an accounting officer in the ship ]. Only two weeks after work he left Egypt for the first time in his life on Horus. Horus travelled to ], ], ], ], ] and eventually the ship stopped at ]'s port to perform some repairs then it was supposed to travel to ] He graduated in 1946 and took a job as an accountant for an oil company working in the ]. Refaat is back to Egypt without nither a job nor a passprt, He felt despair until he had the chance to work in the Company of ] which suits him and his languages but this job required papers, documents and identity so Refaat began to invade the lower world and met a deceiver who gave him fale passport with the name "Ali Mostafa" then he managed to get the Job, his life seemed stable. There in Liverpool he worked at a tourism company, later moving to the ] without a Visa or Green Card. Then the revolution of 1952 broke out, The british felt worried and realized that the Egyptians sympathize with the new System then they started to revise their documents which made Refaat worried so he left the job and got a new false passport for a swiss journalist and he kept living like this from a name to another until he got arrested by a british officer while he was travelling to ] after the political changes in 1953. When he got arrested, he was carrying a british passport but the british officer thought he was jewish then he was given to the Egyptian Intelligence which started an invistigation with him as a jewish. The revolution of 1952 broke out, and the British realized that the Egyptians sympathized with the new government, and they grew more stringent in fighting ]ing. Refaat, worried that he would be discovered, left his job and got a new false passport from a Swiss journalist, moving from one name to another until he was arrested by a british officer while travelling to ] in 1953. He left Egypt for the first time in his life on Horus, travelling to Naples, Genoa, Marseille, Barcelona, Tangier and eventually Liverpool.

There in Liverpool he worked at a tourism company, later moving to the USA without a Visa or Green Card. His immigration status forced him to move to Canada and then to Germany where the Egyptian Consulate accused him of selling his passport and refused to give him a travel document. He was arrested by the German Police who deported him to Egypt. Back in Egypt, with neither job nor identification, Al-Gammal looked to the black market to get identification in the name of "Ali Mostafa". With these he went to work for the company managing the Suez_Canal.

The revolution of 1952 broke out, and the British realized that the Egyptians sympathized with the new government, and they grew more stringent in fighting counterfeiting. Refaat, worried that he would be discovered, left his job and got a new false passport from a Swiss journalist, moving from one name to another until he was arrested by a british officer while travelling to Libya in 1953.
