Kanhaiya Kumar is a leader of All India students Federation (AISF), the student wing of Communist Party of India (CPI). He was elected as student union preside of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 2015. In 2016 February 12, he was arrested by Delhi Police on charges of sedition and criminal conspiracy, which became a major political controversy.

Early Life and Political career

Kanhaiya Kumar was born and brought up in a village called Bihat in Begusarai district,in Bihar. The village is part of the Teghra legislative assembly constituency, which is known to be a stronghold of Communist Party of India (CPI). Kanhaiya Kumar’s father, Jaishankar Singh, is suffering from paralysis and has been bedridden for a few years. His mother, Meena Devi, is an Anganwadi worker. He got a elder brother who works in private sector. His family has traditionally been CPI supporters. Both of his parents have had a history of fighting for the rights of farmers. His uncles are known figures in their village for taking tough stands against the Zamindari system.

Kanhaiya Kumar studied in RKC High School in Barauni, an industrial town in Bihar. During his school days, Kumar took part in several plays and activities organized by IPTA (Indian People’s Theatre Association), a left-leaning cultural group going back to the days of India’s freedom struggle. After completing his school education, in 2002 he moved to Patna and joined the College of Commerce, where he was initiated in student politics. He joined the AISF and a year later was selected as a delegate at its conference in Patna. Kanhaiya Kumar also became involved in the National Service Scheme (NSS), the government’s public service programme. He helped revive many Marxist centres of learning at his college and the Patna University. As a student, Kanhaiya Kumar is known to have performed exceptionally well in inter-college and inter-university debating championships. In 2007, he was a member of the Bihar student's delegation that took part in debate and discussion competition of the NSS organized by the Union government. After completing his post graduation, Kanhaiya Kumar moved to Delhi and joined JNU where he is currently pursuing a PhD in African studies at the School of International Studies. He became a popular student leader in JNU due to his oratory skills and bold views. In 2015 September, Kanhaiya Kumar became the first AISF member to become president of the JNU students’ union, defeating the AISA (All India Students Association), ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad), SFI (Students' Federation of India) and NSU (National Students' Union of India) candidates.

In 2016 February 12, Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested by Delhi police and case was registered against him on Feb 13, under IPC Sections 124-A (sedition), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 34, over an event organised by some ex-members of a student organization DSU (Democratic Students Union) at the Jawaharlal Nehru university against hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru; following complaints by BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) Member of Parliament Maheish Girri and ABVP. Kanhaiya Kumar denied the charges and said that he was neither shouting any slogan nor saying anything against integrity of the country. He said in an interview that "I dissociate myself from the slogans which were shouted in the event. I have full faith in the Constitution of the country and I always say that Kashmir is an integral part of India”. Kanhaiya Kumar's arrest arrest soon snowballed into a major political controversy and has drawn sharp reactions from opposition parties, teachers, students, JNU Alumini, academics and various human right organisations including Amnesty International.Thousands rally across India as thousands of students at Jawaharlal Nehru University strike over Kanhaiya Kumar’s arrest which effectively paralysed the Jawaharlal Nehru University..Thousands of teachers, students and civil society members formed a roughly two-kilometre-long human chain at the JNU on 14th February 2016.

Kanhaiya Kumar's parents alleged that their son is a victim of Hindutva politics, spearheaded by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)

The video of a fiery speech by Kanhaiya Kumar in JNU campus the evening before February 11 became viral in YouTube. In his speech, Kanhaiya Kumar said they do not need a "certificate of patriotism" or "nationalist certificate" from the RSS. He said that "We fight for the 80 per cent of the poor population of this country, and For us, this is nation worship."

In 2016 February 15, when Kanhaiya Kumar & other student was brought to the Patyala House court, Violence broke out and JNU teachers, students and journalists were attacked by BJP supporters & lawyers under leadership of BJP legislator, O.P Sharma.

According to a Delhi Police Special Branch report submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Kanhaiya Kumar was not responsible for organizing the program in support of hanged Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
