''Yo Gabba Gabba!'' was developed by two Southern California fathers, ] and ], who first started working together as teenagers, producing and directing skateboarding videos. Their goal was to design a kids' show that was entertaining while featuring real artists and real performers. Both had no previous experience writing for television, let alone children's broadcasting or education.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.wildbrain.com/animation/about_us/bios/pdf/director/Jacobs_Schultz_bio.pdf |format=PDF |title=Christian Jacobs & Scott Schultz: Co-Creators, Yo Gabba Gabba! |publisher=] |accessdate=2013-08-12}}</ref> In developing the show they took inspiration from a number of sources including '']'', '']'', '']'', as well as ] puppet shows '']'' and '']''.<ref name=usatoday2008>{{cite web|last=Keveney|first=Bill|title='Yo Gabba Gabba!' is monstrous fun for kids, adults|url=http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/2008-10-20-gabba-gabba_N.htm|work=USA Today|accessdate=10 February 2014}}</ref>

Yo Gabba Gabba! is a Children's television series created by Christian Jacobs (alias The MC Bat Commander) and Scott Schultz. It is produced by The Magic Store and Wild Brain. It premiered on Nick Jr. on August 20, 2007, and Noggin on December 31, 2007. It has been referred to as a "Hipster Kid's Show" due to its creators indie credentials.

Overview

Yo Gabba Gabba! is hosted by a character named DJ Lance Rock, and five toy monsters: Brobee, Foofa, Muno, Plex, and Toodee. It features The MC Bat Commander and Ricky Fitness, two members of The Aquabats, and Adam Deibert (formerly of the Aquabats) as the voice of Muno the Cyclops.

The trailer includes guest stars such as "the Clown Prince of Hip-Hop" Biz Markie and designer Paul Frank's corporate mascot "Julius the Monkey." The trailer shows the game Pitfall!

The show features a wide variety of musical guests: The Shins, The Aggrolites, Cornelius, Biz Markie, Shiny Toy Guns, Supernova, Mark Mothersbaugh, Rahzel, The Postmarks, Sugarland, Tony Hawk, Laila Ali, Elijah Wood, The Aquabats, and Mýa have all been confirmed to appear in the first season.

The absurd style of humor used in the show is intended, like The Aquabats, to appeal to adults through its manic, frenzied approach to wholesome messages, while at the same time carrying all the family-friendly content of the average Nick Jr. program.

Among the varied animation sequences during the show is Super Martian Robot Girl, designed by indie cartoonists Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer.

Regular segments

There are several segments of the series that have appeared on the show multiple times:

  • Mark's Magic Pictures, featuring Mark Mothersbaugh, teaching viewers how to draw a certain object or animal
  • Biz's Beat of the Day, starring Biz Markie, demonstrating new beatboxing beats
  • The Super Music Friends Show, featuring musical guests
  • Dancey Dance, featuring celebrity guests performing their own dance moves with the characters
  • Cool Tricks, where a person (child or adult) shows off a special talent (i.e. gymnastics, breakdancing, playing a theremin or hanging a spoon off their nose.)
  • Storytime, where a child is narrating a story (i.e. Moochy & Pooty, Goon Fishin')
  • Super Martian Robot Girl, in the episodes, so far, Summer, Greetings, Dance, Happy, there is a story about a super hero, appearing to have the name, SUPER MARTIAN ROBOT GIRL.
  • Learn with Plex, where Plex shows us four steps on how to do something and repeats each step.
  • Play Pretend with Muno, where Muno pretends to be something twice.
  • Listen with Toodee, where Toodee listens to sounds and the first might be kind of silly.
  • Color with Brobee, where Brobee thinks of a color, and it appears in the background.
  • Play games with Foofa, where Foofa wants to play a game and finds the answer easily.
