Directive 2005/29/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, known as the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive requires Member States of the European Union is concerned with maximum harmonisation of an area of law that is best described in the United Kingdom as business to consumer fair trading law.
Member States of the European Union are required by Directive 2005/29/EC to transpose the requirements of the Directive into their national statute books by no later than 12th June 2007.
Member States are required by Directive 2005/29/EC to apply the measures of the Directive into their national laws by 12th December 2007.
In the United Kingdom the effect of Directive 2005/29/EC will be that existing legislation that is within the scope of the Directive will have to be either repealed or ammended in order for the United Kingdom to comply with its obligations under the Treaty of Rome.
