Turkish occupation of North Syria, or the Syrian Security Belt refers to areas taken over in summer 2016 by Turkish Army and allied Free Syrian Army units (comprised predominantly of Syrian Arabs and Turkmen fighters), during the Syrian Civil War. The area stretches 55 miles long and up to 24 miles deep and includes about 20 villages from Azaz to Jarabulus, where prior to Turkish invasion the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant had been in control for about two years.
