==Etymology==
The village took its name from the area which called '''Boyukduz''' and means (the large area). The semi-arid land is used as winter pasture. The oronym shows the width of the plain. There is the ''Boyukduz'' mountain in the area. Its height is 957 m. The geographic object is named like that because of the coverage of a large area.<ref>''Encyclopedic Dictionary of Azerbaijan Toponyms''. In two volumes. Volume I. p. 304. Baku: "East-West". 2007. ISBN 978-9952-34-155-3.</ref> The researchers suppose that the toponym of ''Böyükdüz'' is associated with the name of the ''Bükdüz'' tribe and its leader ''Bükdüz Əmən'' from the epos of the "]". ''Old Boyukduz'' - is the place of residence of the Bronze and Iron Ages in the Kangarli District. At the moment it is under the ]. It was studied in 1973. The construction remains were found from this hill. On the hill, there were scattered fragments of gray and red clay pots of various shapes. The cultural layer was composed of layers of clay mixed with ash; There were discovered the gray and red clay fragments, osteology fragments, industrial waste, the obsidian fragments, the fragments of glass and iron and etc. The findings are keeping in the Nakhchivan State History Museum. It is supposed that the place of residence belongs to the 2-1 millennium of BC.<ref name="ANAS"/>

As a result of the floods, almost completely destroyed. During the researches 10 human skeletons were found. ''Boyukduz Necropolis I'' - the archaeological monument of the ancient period in the south-east from the same named village in the Kengerli district. Its area is 320 m2. The graves which is more than 50, mostly are in the stone box type. All of them have been washed out during floods. The remains of a human skeleton was found during excavations in one of the graves. In 1972, the materials of the destroyed several graves were collected by the officers of the border guard station and given to the Nakhchivan State History Museum. The findings consists of glass bottles, clay plates in the gray and pink colored, iron sword, dagger, knives, arrowhead, the remnants of the horse's belongings.<ref name="ANAS"/>

''Boyukduz Necropolis II'' - the archaeological monument of the ancient period near the settlement of the ''Boyukduz I'' in the Kengerli district, on the hill where was located the former border-guard station. Was registered in 1991. The graves, mainly, oriented to the north-west and north-south, have been built in the head and the foot sides with one, and in the sides with the two large slab stones. Because of the cemetery is located near the ] (5-6 meters) most of the graves are washed out during the floods and destroyed. Two of the graves have been investigated. From them, were found skeletons, skulls, iron dagger, knife, fragments of the clay pot in the pink colored, bronze ring, the model of the wheel made from the clay.<ref name="ANAS"/>
