Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (English: What's this relationship called) is an Indian Hindi-language television drama that premiered on 12 January 2009 on Star Plus. The show, which focuses on the story of Naira Singhaniya who is Akshara and Naitik's daughter and her husband Karthik Goenka, is produced by Rajan Shahi's Director's Kut Productions. It is the longest running Hindi serial by episode count.

Plot

Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai is the story of a young couple, Naira and KartikGoenka, who live in a Marwari joint family in Udaipur. The story showcases the journey of Naira's parents first as a married couple going through adjustment issues, then as parents of young children and how they learn to love each other and their respective extended families while becoming mature members of their household.

The show later focuses on Naira, who is Akshara's daughter. Meanwhile, Akshara dies in an accident. Naira helps Naitik and her family in overcoming grief and manages their company again. After a few months the Goenkas and Singhaniyas agree to Kartik's and Naira's wedding.

Parallel story arcs

In parallel to Naira and Karthik stories, the stories of their respective siblings also form significant story arcs in the series. The past plots have been built around the lives of Naitik's sisters Nandini and Rashmi. The series has also focused on Naitik's step-siblings. The series has continuously paralleled the story of Akshara-Naitik with that of Varsha-Shaurya. The show also focuses on Naksh (2015–2016), Gayatri "Gayu" Deora (2016–) & Tara (2015–2016). Naksh is Naitik & Akshara's son, Gayu, is Nikhil-Rashmi's daughter (Sameer's stepdaughter). After Rashmi & Sameer's death, Naitik & Akshata adopted Gayu. Tara was Naksh's fiancée until she leaves him. Keerti is Kartik's sister who is also involved in the story.

This section may require cleanup to meet Misplaced Pages's quality standards. The specific problem is: Section should be divided into Main cast and Recurring cast. Character descriptions should be more than complicated family tree relationships, and should contain real-world information about casting, departures, etc. See WP:TVCAST for guidance, and List of Millennium characters as an example of what the goal is. Please help improve this section if you can. (December 2016) (Learn how and when to remove this message)

Remember that new cast members should be added to the bottom of these lists so in many cases, former cast should appear *BEFORE* newer cast members. See WP:TVCAST for guidance.
