:Misplaced Pages has both Azerbaijani and Turks listed as Middle Eastern Americans, just not Armenians...plus Iran is a Caucus territory, as well., but also considered a Middle Eastern one. So you kind of contradicted yourself.

How can I get my Misplaced Pages page to be acceptable when submitted Because it's about me— Preceding unsigned comment added by Tayemartha (talkcontribs)

Hello, Tayemartha, and welcome to the Teahouse. I'm afraid you have taken on a very very difficult task. It's difficult in at least three ways. 1) writing a new article on Misplaced Pages is much much harder than people imagine who have not spent time getting used to the way Misplaced Pages works. 2) Writing about yourself is very strongly discouraged on Misplaced Pages, because Misplaced Pages articles are required to be neutral, and it's hard to do that when you are the subject. 3) Promotion of anybody or anything is absolutely forbidden on Misplaced Pages; but looking your draft, it seems to me that promoting yourself is what you are here for.
Please read WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY and WP:YFA. Then, if you wish to continue, read WP:IRS, and find several reliable sources that are completely independent of your, and talk about you in some depth. (They do not have to be in English). If you cannot find such sources, they it is best to give up: no article about you will be acceptable, however it is written. If you can find some sources, then you are Notable in Misplaced Pages's special sense, and there could be an article about you. Rather than trying to write it yourself (you would need to forget absolutely everything you know or think about yourself, and just write it from what those independent sources say), it would probably be better to ask at requested articles. --ColinFine (talk) 23:15, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Temple

i have no documentory evidences please help me my article temple history of sri sengamala nayagi ammman temple, palavangudi. it was very old 400 years back thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yazhini606 (talkcontribs) 11:07, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, Yazhini606. I've moved your question to the top (which is where new questions go on this page, but not anywhere else in Misplaced Pages) and given it a heading.
I'm afraid the answer is that if you haven't any documentary evidence, then we cannot have an article. Where do you know about it? Are there not books or reports or magazines that you have read? They don't have to be online or in English; but they must have been published, by somebody with a reputation for fact-checking. Personal knowledge is not acceptable, because a reader has no way of checking it. Please see WP:42 and WP:IRS. --ColinFine (talk) 23:03, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Is consensus needed to remove vandalism that is behind semi-protection?

On the day after the election, someone put on the top of the article "List of United States presidential assassination attempts and plots" vandalism appeared as so:

https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=List_of_United_States_presidential_assassination_attempts_and_plots&oldid=748639737

Then, someone saw it and assumed a good faith contribution was simply put in wrong, and fixed it into the tag:

https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=List_of_United_States_presidential_assassination_attempts_and_plots&oldid=748648513

stated that: "(no idea if it is or isnt but this is how to tag it)"

Then shortly afterword, the page got semi-protected. So now the vandalism from the ip editor (it is also their only ever contribution) who is obviously disgruntled about the election (and thought implying there should be more assassination attemps now that Trump was chosen) is stuck behind a wall unable to be removed.

I tried in the talk page requesting an edit, but the person said that I should establish a consensus. Well how do I establish a consensus to remove vandalism, on a page that probably doesnt get huge traffic? Why should I need conesnsus to remove vandalism?

The person added it as their only contribution ever, the day after the election, with no supplied reason to add the text. Didn't even tag it correctly.

So I want to let other editors know, so they can establish a consensus and remove it. I don't know where to ask for editors to look at something so I am here. I can't edit the page.Odsnvdosijsdof (talk) 22:16, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

To make it short:

Day after election, someone added to list of assissinations page "Article is incomplete" as first contribution and no reason to add this text. It was later turned into a tag, because somsone assumed it was in good faith.

When requested edit to remove it, they stated I need consensus to remove the tag. (despite the request edit page stating consensus is only needed for controversial edits)Odsnvdosijsdof (talk) 22:24, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Done. The article is semi protected, so you will be able to edit it as soon as you are autoconfirmed (4 days and 10 edits). I'd say a concensus would be needed to retain it, but please refrain from using the term WP:VANDALISM until you better understand what it is. There is no indication it was entered in bad faith, which is a needed component of vamdalism. John from Idegon (talk) 22:31, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Yup. Vandalism can certainly be removed (and should be) while an article is protected, but this does not appear to be vandalism. It has been in the article for three months and the article was not protected for that whole time. I don't think the tag is need either, but at this point the approach to take is to raise the issue on the talk page. Meters (talk) 22:37, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Oops, didn't see that John had removed the tag. No object from me. Meters (talk) 22:39, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
I think it is pretty clear it was a bad faith edit. Here is a list of indications:

1. Day after contentious election, an IP editor adds text to a page about assassinations stating that the article is incomplete. His edit stated "This list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it." EXPANDING IT. That is not how the tag is supposed to read. 2. It is their only ever contribution. (not bad in itself but combined with other reasons does not help the case) 3. The article was already being heavily vandalized in this period (hence why it was soon semi-protected) 4. They didn't add the tag correctly (if they were aiming to add a tag) 5. They gave no reason on the edit summery why they did their edit 6. They gave no reason in the talk page why they did their edit

Can people just add tags whenever they want without any reason on wikipedia, ? How clear can this joke be, the person is making a joke that there are missing assassinations and that the list "SHOULD BE EXPANDED" (because trump was elected)

But I will concede that it makes sense from the narrow point of view, that if there is a new president, they have to expand the article to show that incident at his rally. But at that point, he was still not president, he was president-elect so it wouldn't belong.Odsnvdosijsdof (talk) 22:51, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Source Question

Through the resource exchange, I had two users track down a couple sources I needed. The sources I needed were only available to me through the Philadelphia Inquirer archives which required $2.95 per article. They were able to find these sources through search engines and microfilm.

My question is how do I reference these sources in the Misplaced Pages page I am attempting to write? As of right now, I only know to link sources to online articles. How can I cite/source these properly? (I'm hoping this makes sense) JRose1317 (talk) 20:08, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

@JRose1317: I think you can use {{Cite news}} for this purpose. Also check out WP:REFB that is a good resource on learning how to handle referencing. RudolfRed (talk) 21:40, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Hello, JRose1317. The important part of a citation is the bibliographic information which should allow a reader to find it even if the link goes away: things like title, author, title of collection or journal, organ (or website), publisher, date, ISBN. Providing a URL is a courtesy to make the reader's life easier, but it is not required - and it is quite acceptable for it to be behind a paywall. --ColinFine (talk) 22:33, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Do deleted articles' history and talk pages get preserved for admins?

Sorry for what might be a dumb question - when articles are deleted, their histories and talk pages disappear, at least from the view of ordinary editors. Sometimes that's a little frustrating when trying to understand in detail (more than AfD provides) about why a page was deleted. Can admins still view these things? I'm asking because a) there might be times I'd consider asking a friendly admin to give some information about what a page looked like pre-deletion and b) since I've started to involve myself a little with AfD and PROD I've had conversations on talk pages for articles that are at risk of deletion and I'd like to understand if they're available for future reference by admins in case that would be useful. Mortee (talk) 19:57, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Mortee. Yes, admins can view deleted articles and talk pages (and restore them if need be). --NeilN 20:02, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Great. As it should be. Thanks for letting me know. Mortee (talk) 20:10, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Confirm and upload

Hello, when will my account will be confirmed? And how I can upload new pictures on wikipedia? Thank you. Finisher27 (talk) 19:51, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

@Finisher27: Welcome to Misplaced Pages. Your account will become autoconfirmed when it is 4 days old with at least 10 edits. You can look at WP:UPLOAD to see how to upload images. If it is a freely licenced image, the preference is to upload it to Commons. RudolfRed (talk) 20:44, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Non-free images

Why are "non-commercial use" images considered non-free on Misplaced Pages? RedPanda25 19:19, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Red. Misplaced Pages allows commercial reuse of our content so it's not enough that it can be displayed here at wikipedia.org. See the opening paragraph of Misplaced Pages:Non-free content. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:48, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
@PrimeHunter: Thanks for getting back to me, that makes sense. Here's one more question about image licensing:
  • Suppose Person A publishes an image under CC-BY-SA.
  • Person B makes a derivative, attributes Person A, and publishes it under the same license.
  • Person C makes a derivative of the derivative, and publishes it under the same license.

My question is, should Person C attribute Person A, Person B, either, or both? RedPanda25 21:39, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

@RedPanda25: Both. commons:Template:Derived from allows up to 25 file links although multiple links are probably mainly used for collage-type works and not chains. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:22, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Embedding 3D models

Hi!

I would like to know if it is possible to embed 3D models of heritage artefacts in a Misplaced Pages page. I would like to embed some of these https://sketchfab.com/britishmuseum/collections/digital-pilgrim on the pilgrim badge page.

Thank you for your help!

Amy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ajeffs0 (talkcontribs) 16:08, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

I'm afraid not, Amy. No external files of any kind can be embedded into Misplaced Pages pages: all media files must first be uploaded to Wikimedia commons or (if they are non-free) to Misplaced Pages. In order to do so, they must be suitably licensed (which most images on the web are not) and be in a suitable format, which I suspect those images are not (but see Help:Upload). You could possible put a link to that site in an article, provided such use met the conditions in External links, but it would not embed the image in the article. --ColinFine (talk) 19:01, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

How to report an admin account?

Hello, in Arabic wikipedia many fake informations like (fake number of earth layers, fake benefits of drinking camel urine...), and sadly most of Arab admins reject any scientific modification that conflict with the Quranic science, and there are a lot of non-encyclopedic articles that talk about fake miracles of Quran, Hadith...etc, that no one can even discuss or critic, or he may get blocked!, ex: الإعجاز العلمي في بيت العنكبوت ، الإعجاز العلمي في السنة النبوية ، الإعجاز الكوني في القرآن ، الإعجاز الفلكي في القرآن ، نبوءات رسول الله ، الإعجاز الغيبي في القرآن الكريم ، الإعجاز العلمي في القرآن

Arabic wikipedia is similar to an Islamic forum, what can we do with such admins? Moußsa (talk) 18:33, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hey Moußsa. I'm sorry to see that you are having some conflict with other at ar.wiki. Unfortunately, en.wiki has no authority over what happens at ar.wiki, and since the vast majority of us likely to not speak the language, we aren't even in a position to comment on the state of affairs. I'm afraid you will have to deal with your conflicts as best you can with other Arab speaking editors on the Arab language project. TimothyJosephWood 18:41, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
The place to discuss this on the English Misplaced Pages would likely be Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard, Moußsa. The equivalent page on the Arabic Misplaced Pages is linked on the left-hand side of that page. That might be worth a try. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:20, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Direct link. TimothyJosephWood 19:29, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Although if the problem really is with most admins, then reporting the issue to admins might not be successful. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:33, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Are there international equivalents of the arbitration committee who would act as the escalation path for issues like that? Mortee (talk) 19:58, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Misplaced Pages:Wikimedia Foundation. But for what it's worth, when users come from other language Wikis and bring reports of armageddon, it's usually because there's a bit more to the story than what is being told in English. Not much we can do about it anyway. Individual projects have to take care of their own, and if it's not going to get the WMF sued, they're probably not going to have a strong onion about it. There's only about 300 employees worldwide, and their not in the habit of getting involved in content disputes. TimothyJosephWood 20:06, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Sure, that's what I would have assumed. I was just curious if the structure was the same. Thanks for explaining. Mortee (talk) 20:13, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this vandalism out. I see several editors are on the case, reverting the changes, and warning the anonymous user who keeps making them. If they continue, they will get blocked. --ColinFine (talk) 19:06, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Userboxes

I've just been having a small, kind of dumb problem. I have made a Babel Userbox and a normal one. But for some reason, they sit side by side. Instead of one above the other. Is there a way to fix this? Bel-Shamharoth (talk) 18:09, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Bel-Shamharoth - Misplaced Pages:Userboxes#Grouping userboxes has a number of options - does this solve your problem? - Arjayay (talk) 18:15, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
I have done that, the problem is that. I can't group the Babel and the Userboxes together, unless I am missing something.

Bel-Shamharoth (talk) 18:19, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hey Bel-Shamharoth. Probably not the most elegant solution but it seems to work. TimothyJosephWood 18:21, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for the help @Timothyjosephwood: Much appreciated! Bel-Shamharoth (talk) 18:22, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Bel-Shamharoth, check out the type of markup I use on my user page under "personal stuff". Instead of trying to alternate userbox top/bot templates, you can open an close tables in order to label different groups of user boxes. TimothyJosephWood 19:01, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
One more quick question @Timothyjospehwood:. How do I make the new sections like you have? I can't find the button where you do that. Like in pages like User:Talk. Bel-Shamharoth (talk) 20:15, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Bel-Shamharoth: Sure thing. New sections are created on user pages just like they are on articles by including the title of the header in equal signs, like this: ==HEADER NAME HERE==. Using three, four, or five equal signs will make smaller level headers. For lots of general information on formatting for Misplaced Pages, you may want to check out the tutorial at Help:Wiki markup. TimothyJosephWood 20:24, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks a ton! You've been really helpful! Bel-Shamharoth (talk) 20:26, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

multiple authors on a publicaiton

Hi,

I am doing my first article on an archeologist. She wrote a number of books, two books she collaborated on with other writers. How do I reference that? I have been researching on my own in Misplaced Pages but cannot find anything.

thanks MauraWen (talk) 17:32, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hey MauraWen. What you probably want is Template:Cite book, which can either be input manually in the text editor, or can be automated (if you're using a non-mobile device) by clicking "Cite" in the edit window header, and selecting "Book" from the Templates drop-down-menu. The citation template supports AFAIK an unlimited number of authors. TimothyJosephWood 17:41, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

How to find a picture?

Hello! I have recently gone through the Wiki Adventure and know the basics of editing. thinking that I am ready to help the community I went and found the list of stub articles. I picked Auxiliary Point, in Nevada as my first project. I really wanted to put a picture of the peninsula in but Wikimedia has no such picture and it said you cannot add pictures that aren't your own. how would I get a picture and add it? Kb10r (talk) 16:53, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hey Kb10r. See guidance available at Misplaced Pages:Finding images tutorial. TimothyJosephWood 16:58, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello! Where do I start?

I am somewhat new to Misplaced Pages, (account made 2 months ago, editing for a while) and I want to know where to start. I have made a very small article in my sandbox, but I think it's too small to submit for review. I know every edit counts, but I want to do a little better than a couple of spelling mistake editing (even though I'm glad to do it!)

Bedsidelamp (talk) 16:37, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hey Bedsidelamp. That largely depends on what topics you are interested in. There's usually a WikiProject for just about any area of interest. TimothyJosephWood 16:49, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

How to leave comments on talk pages

I am currently doing an assignment at university which requires us to post comments on the talk pages of our classmates. However, I don't seem to be able to figure out how to do this. Any help on how to do this would be appreciated. Thanks Imcgrouther18 (talk) 16:10, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, Imcgrouther18: you go to their talk pages (such as User Talk:Imcgrouther18, and edit them (if the talk page doesn't already exist, you'll get a message either asking if you wish to create it, or warning you that you are creating it, I forget which). You can pick "new section" (which might appear as '+') from the tool bar at the top of the page. Give the section a heading, and then type the text. Finish with four tildes, just as you have here. ee Help:Talk pages for more. --ColinFine (talk) 19:11, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Is it OK to add my own photo of a book cover?

Hi, guys. I'm new to contributing / editing wikis here. I just started a few days ago and have only one article draft awaiting review. (This article is about a children's book called "The Voyage of the Arctic Tern" which was written by physician and researcher Dr. Hugh Montgomery -- he has an existing wiki article here.) Am I allowed to add my own photo or scan of the cover of Dr. Montgomery's book, into the article? (I tried searching for such an image from Google Books, but the existing ones are too tiny.) Do let me know. Thank you! SarazadeCruz (talk) 14:47, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi SarazadeCruz - A non-free image, such as a book cover, can be added to an article, but not a draft, please see Misplaced Pages:Non-free content for the detailed explanation and "how-to". One of the criteria is that that the image must be very low resolution - enough to identify the book, but typically no more than 300 pixels in one direction - most album covers are taken from Amazon, or similar sites, who also have to use low-resolution images - so an image on Google books, is probably ideal. - Arjayay (talk) 15:00, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Hi Arjayay! Thanks for the advice.SarazadeCruz (talk) 16:15, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

How to add a phrase for defining?

femme-a-gogues needs defining.

Cmoo46 (talk) 14:32, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, Cmoo46. Misplaced Pages is not a dictionary, and doesn't contain definitions unless the subject is notable enough for an encyclopaedia entry. You might want to try Wiktionary. --ColinFine (talk) 15:08, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Don't even know what a Wiktionary is? Cmoo46 (talk) 15:56, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Hey Cmoo46. See https://www.wiktionary.org/. Wiktionary is an online dictionary similar to how Misplaced Pages is an online encyclopedia. Misplaced Pages is generally for articles on topics, but not usually articles on words or phrase in-and-of-themselves (with some exceptions). On the other hand, Wiktionary is entirely about words and their definitions. TimothyJosephWood 16:10, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

New article upload question

Help!!

I seem to have somehow accidentally included a re-direct in my latest upload (a biographical article on Arthur Kett Barclay).

How do I remove it without deleting all my work? FRAS (talk) 14:26, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, FRAS, and welcome to the Teahouse. Your draft is here: Draft:Arthur Kett Barclay. The redirect to that draft is at Misplaced Pages:Arthur Kett Barclay. There is nothing particularly harmful about that redirect, so it doesn't need to be deleted, really (see WP:R#CRD).
But if it bothers you, go to Misplaced Pages:Arthur Kett Barclay and place {{Db-g7}} on it. The draft will be kept. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 15:07, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you, think I'll leave it be in that caseFRAS (talk) 15:28, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Adding pictures?

I think that Im getting to grips with adding references but Im still in the dark about adding pictures.. Loessperson (talk) 14:19, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Loessperson, welcome to the Teahouse! Typically, the hardest step for adding pictures to Misplaced Pages is actually choosing what picture to add. This is because you have to consider the copyright status of the image you are adding. One of Misplaced Pages's fundamental principles is sharing free content, so we want to use only as much non-free content as needed. Free content is work that anyone can use, modify, and distribute for any reason, including commercially. In the United States (where Misplaced Pages's servers are located), copyright protection is granted automatically to works when they are published, which makes these works non-free. Unfortunately, this prevents us from using most of the images you might find on the Internet. There are generally four kinds of images you are allowed to upload to Misplaced Pages:
  1. your own work, i.e. images that you created entirely yourself
  2. freely licensed work, or images that have been specifically released under a copyright license that allows for free usage (a popular example are the Creative Commons licenses)
  3. public domain work, or images that are so old that their copyright has expired (anything published before 1923 is in the public domain in the US), and
  4. non-free work, if they meet a very strict set of criteria
If you feel sure that the image you are adding fits one of the categories above, head over to Misplaced Pages:File Upload Wizard, which will provide instructions on how to upload and supply the necessary information for the image you would like to add. If you are unsure, please feel free to describe the image you want to add here and a Teahouse host would be happy to provide some feedback. Our policy page at Misplaced Pages:Image use policy has more detailed information on what kinds of images you can add, if you're interested. Best of luck, Mz7 (talk) 14:47, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

How do i use the Visual Editor to edit a wikipedia draft?

How do i use the Visual Editor to edit a wikipedia draft? Terrariola (talk) 09:42, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Terrariola, welcome to the Teahouse. VisualEditor works the same way on drafts and articles. The process to create a draft with Misplaced Pages:Articles for creation starts out in the source editor but you can switch to VisualEditor at any time, also before saving the draft the first time. See Misplaced Pages:VisualEditor/User guide. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:55, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
I am also interested to try Visual Editor, so I tried to use those instructions - unfortunately they seem to be out of date. It points to Misplaced Pages:VisualEditor/Opt-in, which says to "go to the Beta Features section of Special:Preferences and choose the "VisualEditor" item." But there is no such option there: perhaps it has moved ... does anybody know how to activate Visual Editor? --Gronk Oz (talk) 12:10, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
There are settings at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing. Misplaced Pages:VisualEditor/User guide itself says how to enable VisualEditor. The link to Misplaced Pages:VisualEditor/Opt-in is problematic. I guess it's still linked because it mentions unsupported browsers and the link is at: "You'll need a VisualEditor-supported browser; most are. More information can be found here." PrimeHunter (talk) 12:34, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
I have posted about it at Misplaced Pages talk:VisualEditor/User guide#Is the enabling VE section out of date? PrimeHunter (talk) 12:49, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
checkY That works! Thanks, PrimeHunter. --Gronk Oz (talk) 14:13, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

I am not promoting a business but still i am getting notification regarding the speedy deletion.

Hi,

I created the page for Amplus Solar. I am not associated with the company. I am getting notification for article deletion. The article is not for any promotional purpose. How should I change the article so that it is not deleted? Anshikaa003 (talk) 06:35, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse, Anshikaa003. The article is overtly promotional as I read it, and relies on shockingly promotional sources, including the company's own website and press release hosting websites. The article includes an unreferenced and purely promotional section called "Growth Story". So, when you deny a promotional purpose, your assessment seems to lack merit, in my opinion. Cullen Let's discuss it 07:44, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Hi Cullen328,

I have made some changes. As mentioned by you, I have deleted the growth story section and also removed certain citations. What more can I do to save it from speedy deletion. I am not able to figure out where I am sounding promotional, because I don't intend to. Anshikaa003 (talk) 08:23, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Anshikaa003, your article is still referenced to the company's own website, plus a story titled, "India’s Amplus Solar is a Soaring Success in the PV Market". That so-called article is the exact opposite of a reliable source. It is overtly promotional and obviously based on company press releases. So, despite your recent edits, the article remains deeply promotional. Cullen Let's discuss it 08:32, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Hi Cullen328,

I have deleted all the citations that I thought to be from any PR website or that seems to be a company promotional link. I hope the time line table is fine along with the rest of the content. Also, once satisfied that the content is not promotional, can I remove the warning template? Thankyou for helping me, your guidance means alot. Anshikaa003 (talk) 08:48, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Anshikaa003, much of the text you added to Amplus solar is copied from other pages on the internet. That is copyright violation, and is not permitted here (follow the blue link to read about it). It seems possible that you have some personal or professional connection to the company; if so, please declare it on the talk-page of the article, and make no further change to the article itself (you can still ask on the talk-page for any reasonable change to be made for you). I agree with Cullen328 that the tone of the article is unacceptably promotional; whether you think the issue is fixed or not, you may not remove a speedy deletion notice from an article you have created. What you may do (and have already done) is contest the deletion on the talk-page. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 09:14, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Justlettersandnumbers I have not copied the content from anywhere. I have written it. Though all the facts mentioned about the company have relevant citations. Please let me know how to address these issues. It is my first article and I want to learn how to post relevant and nice articles. Please give me some suggestions & feedbacks. Thanks Anshikaa003 (talk) 09:45, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
The evidence on copyright violation disagrees with you. I have moved your reply as you placed it in the wrong section of this page. --David Biddulph (talk) 09:52, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
I removed large sections of the article and added a few sources, should have more content added as fast as possible to assure that the article does not become a rarely edited stub

Terrariola (talk) 10:12, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi all,

Shall i continue making edits like adding fresh and unique piece of content properly in this article or just leave it like that. What steps should i follow to make this one a successful article? Anshikaa003 (talk) 10:28, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Anshikaa003: please see WP:42. Remember that Misplaced Pages has essentially no interest in anything which a company says about itself, or which its employees or associates say about it. Nothing - and that includes anything that they say about it in press releases or interviews, even if these are published by somebody else. You need to find substantial discussion of the company by people who have no connection with it, and published in a reliable place. --ColinFine (talk) 15:05, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

How do I add a subcategory to a page?

For example, the categorial page for "Middle Eastern Americans" does not have the subgroup "Armenian-Americans" listed. It should, though, however as the U.S. Census Bureau and CIA/World Fact Book list Armenian Americans as Middle Eastern Americans. Plus, other pages on this website has them listed as such. I guess that page (Middle Eastern Americans category) failed to list them.Bzazaian11 (talk) 04:10, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Bzazaian11, welcome to the Teahouse. Definitions vary. Middle East#Other definitions of the Middle East says: "The countries of the South Caucasus—Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia—are occasionally included in definitions of the Middle East.". I think Misplaced Pages does usually not do this. I don't know what is most common in America but Misplaced Pages is an international encyclopedia. It could be confusing if Armenians are called Middle Eastern if they emigrate to America but not in other situations. A subcategory is added to a category by editing the subcategory the same way an article is added to a category. See Help:Category#Putting pages in categories. Sources of a Wiki Page

Can I uploade PDF files as sources for a Misplaced Pages Page? Hcastronuevo (talk) 02:05, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

It's best to link to the source of a pdf file, and put the link in a reference naming the file and its author and date. If all else fails you could put it on Google drive and link to that; however, the pdf needs to be an identifiable, previously published document to be a source for citation.Jessegalebaker (talk) 02:34, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Welcome to the Teahouse, Hcastronuevo. A PDF published by an organization with professional editorial control and a reputation for accuracy, fact checking and error correction is acceptable as a reliable source in a Misplaced Pages article. However, that PDF must be hosted on a website controlled by the copyright holder, or the content must be freely licensed, for example, under an acceptable Creative Commons license. We cannot link to any copyright violating material on any random website. Please read WP:COPYVIOCITE for the details of the guideline. Cullen Let's discuss it 03:23, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
I agree with all the Cullen328 has said, Hcastronuevo, but I don't think he has been sufficiently direct in arguing against part of Jessegalebaker's advice: Do not put a PDF file on Google drive and link to it. If it is not your PDF, this will probably be a copyright violation anyway; but even if it is yours, or its copyright makes this legal, it will still be useless as a reference or external link for Misplaced Pages, because its provenance is not known: anybody can put a PDF up on Google drive that says anything at all. --ColinFine (talk) 15:02, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Re Cullen328, ColinFine: Indeed, there are copyright issues; I've never used Google Drive to source here. But it's possible, if only a photostat is available and the author allows re-posting. Provenance would be established by naming the author, date, original source, and proof of existence (a library catalog record is good); the photostat may show creator info as well. Some genealogy citations may have to be done this way, or refer to reader to the genealogy library where the record can be found. Cheerio. Jessegalebaker (talk) 15:31, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
I don't agree, Jessegalebaker. The meat of the reference is the bibliographic information by which the published information can in principle be found (eg through a major library). If the information is online at a reliable source, then the citation can include a URL for that source; but it shouldn't contain a URL for an unreliable source. --ColinFine (talk) 18:54, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Re ColinFine: I won't argue with your general view on it. A proper citation is necessary; material lacking this can be challenged and removed. Yet some readers (homebound or not near a library) may appreciate, in addition to bibliography, an immediately viewable copy if it can be provided without copyright infringement; that's the only reason I mention a user's posting it if warranted. Readers share a responsibility for assessing the reliability of claims they encounter. Misplaced Pages is rife with political bias, edit wars, articles of marginal quality, and other imperfections yet I still treasure it as a resource. Even professional literature is not guaranteed to be accurate, complete, or free from ulterior motive. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jessegalebaker (talkcontribs) 19:46, 9 February 2017 -(UTC) (Thanks, forgot to sign!) Misplaced Pages has both Azerbaijani and Turks listed as Middle Eastern Americans, just not Armenians...plus Iran is a Caucus territory, as well., but also considered a Middle Eastern one. So you kind of contradicted yourself.

what's the best place to start editing?

I'm new here and looking for a place to get started as a contributing editor. I've read all of the guidelines and links for new contributors, but would like an easy(?) article to start editing. Thanks! Soli58 (talk) 01:47, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, Soli58, and welcome to the Teahouse. Take a look at these articles that have been without any sources for more than ten years. Try to find information about those topics and add it to the articles. And, unlike the original contributors, be smart and cite your sources.
This is an "easy" task because there isn't really anything you could break. Most (if not all) of that unreferenced content should have sources, or it needs to go. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 02:09, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Any article is open to editing. Short articles that aren't edited frequently are easier to work on. There's a "view history" tab to check the edits and look at previous versions of the same article, and a "talk" tab to look at other editors' comments or problems with the article. Know your subject and have notes and sources before starting the edit; I compose my edits offline. I've found the markup language difficult, as is the documentation for it, so the article I worked on took 150 edits to do, but computer-savvy users may have less trouble with this aspect. There is a "cite" button that brings up a dialog box whenever you want to put a reference in; this generates the code for it. There are also buttons for italic and bold type. Read WP:5P for more info on editorial policies. But it is open to anyone; you cannot damage Misplaced Pages because any edit can be reversed and the earlier material restored. Jessegalebaker (talk) 02:33, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Soli58 I agree completely with Finnusertop, but judging from my experience with Syntelic, getting rid of unsourced content is less satisfying than shoveling sand against the tide. If you are interested in Genetics, there are lots of "stub" articles at https://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Genetics that could benefit from additions. There are many other projects, as listed at https://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia:Database_reports/WikiProjects_by_changes that probably have stub articles of their own. Happy editing! DennisPietras (talk) 03:14, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
DennisPietras, your "sand shoveling" consisted of a single attempt to delete that article, which another editor declined. Then, another editor added a source to the article, and it is in somewhat better shape. You were advised that you should take the matter to Articles for Deletion if you had a policy based reason for deleting the article. You have not done so. Cullen Let's discuss it 03:31, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Using Google books for citations

While participating in the Citation Hunt, I was searching for a citation for an article on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (compelling stuff!), and I found a reference to the section needing citation on the Google books site. Should I just add the link to the Google Books or should I cite the actual book?

Citation Hunt link: https://tools.wmflabs.org/citationhunt/en?id=2a6c9769&cat=all

Google Book link: https://books.google.com/books?id=BjhFBgAAQBAJ&pg=PA34&lpg=PA34&dq=Musculotropics+relieving+spasm+without+affecting+normal+gut+motility&source=bl&ots=ocW80E8Wm6&sig=L-DQ-6Un3jAW9pDJTDoPj4sfukE&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj9pdC554HSAhWIv1QKHRaBC6wQ6AEILTAD#v=onepage&q=Musculotropics%20relieving%20spasm%20without%20affecting%20normal%20gut%20motility&f=false

Please excuse the massive query string.

Thanks for any advice CliffLandin (talk) 01:03, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse, CliffLandin. I suggest that you use Template:Cite book within the reference tags, and add that Google Books query string to the URL field. Fill out the other applicable fields, and when a reader clicks the book title, it will take them to the Google Books display. Filling the ISBN field will allow the reader to find the book in libraries or for sale. Cullen Let's discuss it 01:17, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
@CliffLandin and Cullen328: this tool makes it super easy for you. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 03:26, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
@Finnusertop: That's a useful tool that I was unaware of. @CliffLandin: When you're using a Google Books URL in a reference, you should drop everything after the page number (as the rest is just search artifacts)— just https://books.google.com/books?id=BjhFBgAAQBAJ&pg=PA34 goes to the correct place. Deor (talk) 11:01, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
@Cullen328: @Finnusertop: @Deor: - Great! Thank you for the help. CliffLandin (talk) 13:26, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
CliffLandin, Google adds a lot of garbage to its urls. All you need in this case, where you have a page number in the link, is https://books.google.com/books?id=BjhFBgAAQBAJ&pg=PA34; for snippet view and unpaginated books in preview, all you need is the book id, up to (but not including) the first ampersand (so in this case, that would be https://books.google.com/books?id=BjhFBgAAQBAJ). Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 16:14, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

@CliffLandin: there's also a pretty cool tool at http://reftag.appspot.com where you can just paste the gBooks URL into it, and it will make it a fully-formatted Misplaced Pages footnote. MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:50, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Removal of Template Issue notices

I am unable to understand certain issues highlighted with the page "Kadambari Danave" 1. In India, its always the fore name and not surname thats frequently used to identify a person. 2.How to remove message that specifies a close relation? The person is not related other than formal acquaintance.

I am not very familiar with some of the terms used. Riyers (talk) 00:44, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

references in wikipedia

I am writing a Misplaced Pages article and want to use the same reference to an article or book two or three different times. Should I enter the information over again into the popup box each time I use the reference, or is there some simple way to use it over again? Thanks.Rgschroeder12 (talk) 00:30, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse, Rgschroeder12. There is a technique called "named references" that allows you to create a reference once, give it a name, and then invoke it as many times as you want in an article. Please see WP:REFNAME for details. Be careful of the coding. Everything needs to be just right or you will get an error message. Cullen Let's discuss it 01:22, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Need Help I am new to this and it is a mass of confusion to me

Hi , I am Phillip Martindale, PhillipM handle on Misplaced Pages, and I have been asked by the WM3 Pro Cycling team to change their Misplaced Pages page to reflect their new status. (They changed sponsors this year from Rabobank -Liv to WM3.) I have tried figuring this out but Misplaced Pages is a bit confusing to me. At this point I am not sure what to do. I have changed the page several times to reflect the new information and it looks good for a couple of hours but each time it reverts back to the old version. Could you please give me permission to change this page to reflect the new status of the the team or tell me how to do it. They have asked me to do this and it is not good for the new sponsors to have the old team information online. Can you please help me with this and tell me what to do. I am desperate to help them. My Misplaced Pages handle is PhillipM and I started changing the page sveral days ago. I have done this three times and each time it goes back to its old page. Please help me

Thank you

Phillip Martindale — Preceding unsigned comment added by PhillipM (talkcontribs) 22:55, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi @PhillipM: on Misplaced Pages we have a policy that articles should be written from a neutral point of view, and should not be promotional in tone. This means that anyone with a conflict of interest (e.g. someone who is tasked with updating a Misplaced Pages page on behalf of the subject) is strongly advised to stay away from the topic. It seems to me as if you have managed to get the facts into the article, but you've also included some promotional language, by quoting the sponsors, which is a perfect example of why it's so dangerous to edit under a conflict of interest. --Slashme (talk) 07:42, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Hello, PhillipM. A good place to alert editors to the need to update this article would be at Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Cycling. That WikiProject is pretty active, so I'm sure you'll get a response. Cordless Larry (talk) 07:51, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

I've removed the part that I considered promotional. In general, to see what is going on in an article, you can take a look at the "history" tab (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=WM3_Pro_Cycling&action=history ) and you can see exactly who has been doing what, and if they filled in the edit summary, you can also see why. For example, User:Theroadislong was the one who removed a lot of text that you had added, with comments like "entirely unreferenced and promotional in tone". When you find that your contributions to an article are being undone, you should go to the article's attached talk page (e.g. Talk:WM3_Pro_Cycling) and discuss the matter. If you specifically want to draw the attention of another editor, you can alert them by using the ping template, e.g {{ping|PhillipM}}, or by simply linking to their user page: ]. You can also drop a note on their user talk page. I hope that explanation helps; please ask again if you need more help. --Slashme (talk) 07:55, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Creating an internal link when there is more than one article with the same name

I've tried to create an internal link to an article about the English folksinger Chris Wood but it links to a disambiguation page. How do I write the link so it goes where it should? Joe Fogey (talk) 20:10, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello Joe. You need the link to point to Chris Wood (folk musician), not Chris Wood. If you're using the source editor, you can do that like so: ], which becomes: Chris Wood. This is called "piping" – the text before the | is the target of the link, the text after is what is actually displayed to the reader. In the visual editor, you simply make a link the normal way and select Chris Wood (folk musician) from the list. – Joe (talk) 20:20, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Notability about a person with repeated COI

Hello everyone -

Have used Misplaced Pages since I was a kid but want to help do my little bit to make it a better place. I noticed an article about Oliver Cookson and the talk & history pages show repeated mention of COI of a few contributors. I was also following the fact that a bunch of new content being added at the start of the year was essentially references to interviews with the subject, which reading another section of the Teahouse this doesn't usually count for notability.

I have no personal connection to the subject, so I wanted someone to advise on what to do. Thanks in advance!50Stripes (talk) 19:30, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello 50Stripes and welcome to the Teahouse! This is a complicated topic. Looking into the history of the article for Oliver Cookson, I see that COI is only mentioned once, but that the article was created by G2003, who was in all likelihood paid to write the article who was paid to write the article. G2003 was indefinitely blocked as an account dedicated to promotion and advertising. The article was nominated for deletion and the decision was to "keep" it. The only reference provided during that discussion was this one, describing a lawsuit in which Cookson was involved.
I would be interested to know the opinion of other editors. If you wanted to address COI concerns, you could make a post at WP:COI/N. My understanding is that in practice it can be very difficult or impossible to demonstrate COI at an article, though I might be wrong. Another possibility is to make a post at the neutral point of view noticeboard, WP:NPOVN, asking if people believe the article may be written in too promotional a tone. Lastly, you could consider nominating the article for deletion again. I will wait for feedback from others. -Darouet (talk) 19:50, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

How to save a page from deletion?

Hello, I am new to the site. The page I have been contributing to (along with others) is said to be deleted soon due to lack of notability. May I ask who will be the judge to decide the level of notability? The person, Jiansheng Chen, was a victim of an unusual shooting death where he was shot inside his van in his neighborhood by the community security guard. The case brings memory of the shooting death of Trayvon Martin and it's getting increasing attention from the public. Thanks for your help in answering my question.SlowSuperMom (talk) 19:21, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

SlowSuperMom. In order for the article to be kept, it needs to be demonstrated that it meets Misplaced Pages's notability standards for biographies. If it doesn't, it doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't belong anywhere on Misplaced Pages, but maybe that it just doesn't need it's own stand alone article. For example, it looks like it's been suggested at the deletion discussion that some of the content be included in the main article on Pokemon GO, which may be a good suggestion.
Unfortunately, lots of newer editors get their first article deleted, because our policy on notability can be sometimes complex and difficult to understand. But a lot of the time that's just part of the learning process. After all, creating a brand new article is one of the harder things on Misplaced Pages to do. TimothyJosephWood 20:04, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
Welcome to the Teahouse, SlowSuperMom. Discussion is taking place at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Jiansheng Chen and Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Shooting of Jiansheng Chen. These discussions usually take one week but sometimes longer. The final decision will be made by an administrator who will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the arguments to keep or delete, specifically as they relate to Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. Cullen Let's discuss it 20:20, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
(ec)
Hello SlowSuperMom and welcome to the Teahouse! Thank you for your note and for contributing to Misplaced Pages. I have looked at your article Jiansheng Chen and see that there is a deletion discussion ongoing here. There is another very similar article, Shooting of Jiansheng Chen, which has also been nominated for deletion.
I often edit articles related to recent deaths that involve officers in the United States, and am concerned with these issues. In my experience, it is very difficult to predict, early on, whether an individual incident will become sufficiently notable to merit an independent article. Often, articles are written for a particular shooting, and then deleted after a review. Other times, article content is merged into another article where the incident may be summarized briefly. I see both options are being considered at these two articles.
In my view, those discussions regarding deletion are the best place to make arguments about whether wikipedia should have an article about the shooting of Jiansheng Chen. The discussion will focus on two primary issues: the notability of the subject (see these guidlines, WP:N), and what kind of coverage the subject has received in reliable sources (WP:RS).
Right now, it appears there has been significant local coverage (the Virginian Pilot), some coverage in the larger, national press (NBC, CBS ), and significant international coverage (). This strongly suggests that some content might go somewhere on wikipedia, but I am not sure if the event should have its own article. My advice is to make cogent arguments at the deletion discussions, referencing all relevant newspaper articles. You should also provide more sources for the articles in question. I hope that helps. -Darouet (talk) 20:11, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
Hello TimothyJosephWood , Cullen328 , and Darouet , thank you all so much for your help with the topic. Especially, I appreciate Darouet’s insight into the similar incidents and providing helpful references. It definitely makes sense to merge the page with the “shooting of Jiansheng Chen”. But merging with Pokémon Go may make it harder for people to find the information regarding the case. I will take time to write on the discussion for deletion board. Thanks again for your help!SlowSuperMom (talk) 21:54, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Creating a new page

As stated on your site “Misplaced Pages covers certain kinds of subjects and not others. Our articles must be "worthy of notice"; this avoids filling Misplaced Pages with pages that are not really meant for an encyclopedia.”

My question is: Can a scholar create a page about her own scholarship that has links to other Misplaced Pages pages already in existence?

Thanks,

JM 199.79.170.160 (talk) 17:04, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Being new around here, and not knowing much about the topic at hand (*the scholarship*), my comment would be this: Misplaced Pages requires that the subject of an article have a certain level of notoriety. Using links for other Wiki articles signifies that /those/ things are notable, but how does that show the notoriety of the scholarship itself? Some links to internal articles are fine, but I tend to think that you should look outside the current content for more substantial contributions for the article itself. - NsTaGaTr  17:32, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
Just a comment to point out that "notoriety" means "The state or condition of being notorious; the fact of being famous or well known, esp. for some reprehensible action, quality, etc." which is very different from notability as explained below. Dbfirs 23:31, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
Haha - you are more than correct. I meant 'notable', and even used it in other places in the sentence, but clearly my early morning brain was processing the wrong word there. To be fair, though, a notorious person/subject would clearly fit the requirement of being notable... :D - NsTaGaTr  00:37, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Hello, JM. Autobiographies are strongly discouraged, because in spite of the best intentions it is difficult to give an impartial, neutral coverage. Even so, the requirement to show "NOTABILITY" (in Misplaced Pages's special meaning of the word) still holds. Misplaced Pages does not decide which subjects are "worthy of notice": rather, we report the things that have already received sufficient notice in reliable, independent sources. There is a good, very succinct description of this requirement at WP:42. --Gronk Oz (talk) 17:38, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Hi JM. It depends on what exactly the focus of that page is. We have biographies of scholars who meet our notability guidelines for academics and educators, but creating or an editing an article on yourself is strongly discouraged by the conflict of interest policy. Or if the page you had in mind was more topical, it's not a conflict of interest, but you would still have to take off your "researcher hat" and be careful to approach it as an encyclopaedia article; i.e. ensure that it is a notable topic discussed in multiple reliable, secondary sources, and summarise those sources in an unbiased way without unduly emphasising your own work, including unpublished research, or straying into an original synthesis of the primary literature.
In general I would say that while scholars are can be immensely valuable contributors to Misplaced Pages, writing a fresh article about your own research is not the best way to go about it. In the past it has frequently caused problems and frustration for both researchers and Wikipedians. I think it's better to start small, by improving existing articles on your field, and in doing so getting a sense of Misplaced Pages's editorial conventions and norms of collaboration. Personally I completely avoid writing about my own research area on Misplaced Pages, because I simply find it too difficult to keep my "Misplaced Pages hat" on while I do so. Instead, I like to focus on adjacent fields that I'm knowledgeable about but don't actively work on. – Joe (talk) 17:41, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
The scholarship topic should be published in a reputable journal or book, and other authors, textbooks, or encyclopedias have written about it. Misplaced Pages is not a research publisher. You can try creating the page anyway; however pages that don't meet the criteria in Misplaced Pages:Five pillars will probably be deleted later. You can create an account and put the new article on your user sandbox page and ask for review by senior editors; this way they might offer advice or help on it.Jessegalebaker (talk) 17:52, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Any advice for a newcomer to Misplaced Pages?

Hi there. I'd like to say thanks for the invite. As someone with experience in English, I'm determined to prove myself on Misplaced Pages.

One question: What advice would you give to me for future reference?

Thanks for your time.

Cypher7850 (talk) 16:45, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello Cypher7850, and welcome to the Teahouse. One piece of advice? I'm sure others will have more to offer but how about: Be willing to ask questions and learn. So you're off to a great start. --Gronk Oz (talk) 16:54, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

@Gronk Oz Thanks for the welcome. I'll admit I'm a bit nervous being an editor on Misplaced Pages. But in time, I hope I'll learn from the best & become a respected member of the Misplaced Pages Community. Cypher7850 (talk) 16:59, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
Short and simple (*from a fellow newcomer*) - start small and build from there. Don't bite off more than you can chew. - NsTaGaTr  17:34, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
The best advice I can give you, Cypher7850, is four-fold:
  1. Look at pages you visit in edit mode and try to notice how the markup renders when you hit preview. That helped me learn the markup rather quickly.
  2. Don't be in a big hurry to create your first article. There are plenty of things to do besides writing new articles here. Some examples include: Counter vandalism patrol and copy editing. There are many more. Also, when you do create your first article, take advantage of our sister project, Articles for Creation. It can be disheartening to have an article deleted, and AfC will help you avoid that.
  3. Understand that pretty much no matter what, some of the edits you make will get reverted. Don't get upset. Ask the editor that reverted them why politely on their talk page if they did not explain on yours, ask questions here to clarify any confusion and if you still think your reverted edit was an improvement to the article, start a discussion on the article's talk page and try to gain concensus for your changes. This is probably the most confusing thing for a new editor.
  4. Remember, you cannot break Misplaced Pages. Be bold. If you screw up, learn from your mistakes by clarifying what the problem was in discussion here and with other editors.
Welcome to the Corps of Wikipedians. Enjoy yourself and thanks for being here. John from Idegon (talk) 23:25, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

hey! ive been trying to edit this page as the info is very outdated, but i am having a hard time getting it to stick - mods keep reverting it. i know i must be doing *something* wrong, but i don't know what - all of the information i am adding is correct and sited - i am leaving past info as "history". what can i do? Emmamame (talk) 16:16, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Hey Emmamame. The correct course of action is to continue discussing changes to the article on the talk, as you have been with User:Another Believer, who...could maybe use to be a bit more explanatory in their edit summaries when it's clear there is more than one person working on an article. TimothyJosephWood 16:37, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
I've responded on the user's talk page and also invited WikiProject Oregon members to come improve the article. I've encouraged User:Emmamame to continue using the article's talk page to submit requests, but to be patient while volunteers make updates appropriately. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:46, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

yes. im caught up.sorry for not really knowing what i am doing/being a hassle. i just have my bosses messaging me about it/being bummed its not updated yet. i will be patient and have told them the same. thanks so much for your help, everyone. Emmamame (talk) 16:59, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Emmamame: Unfortunately, although I'm sure you care very much about your boss's opinion, Misplaced Pages doesn't. You should definitely take the time to review our policy on conflicts of interest, and if your boss would like to press the issue, you can inform them that failure to abide by that policy will likely results in members of your organization, and potentially also associated IP addresses being blocked from editing Misplaced Pages, and therefore no longer even in a position to suggest that changes be made. I'm sure they'll find that somewhat more disagreeable than an inconvenient delay. TimothyJosephWood 17:50, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
Timothyjosephwood:no, one is pushing it! i apologized for being impatient and said i'd pass the info on to them. no one is trying to disrespect wikipedia. they only contacted me because i had sent a screen shot of my initial edit, feeling as though i'd been helpful. when they looked again later, it had been changed, which was disappointing to all of us haha but i get it now and we are all going with the flow! thanks for the warning, though! i appreciate it.

Circumcision denialism "intactivism"

The article I wrote about a male circumcision instrument (Unicirc) has been amended by an editor to "doubt neutrality." The editor expresses doubt about the scientific evidence that male circumcision reduces female-to-male transmission, and attaches a popular magazine article in German. The scientific evidence is indisputable. Are climate deniers and vaccine deniers also allowed to pollute Misplaced Pages? How does Misplaced Pages deal with these issues? Thanks for your advice? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Petersmillard (talkcontribs) 15:03, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse, Petersmillard. We have a very high standard for reliable sources in medical articles which is described in WP:MEDRS. That being said, I think that the scientific consensus regarding the favorability of circumcision in general is much weaker (or perhaps non-existent) as opposed to climate change and vaccination. I do not think that an article about a medical device is the right place to discuss the broader issues in depth, but the article must present both sides of the controversy in the scientific literature if it is to discuss why this device is used. Facing problems to create the page.

Hi everyone! I am facing difficulties with the fleet section of Atrak Air. I am not able to make the table perfect. Can someone take a look on that full page and tell me how to create the fleet table and what other things do I have to add? Because of this problem from the past 1 day, I had to do continuously editing which I don't want to do anymore. That's why I'm asking for help. Thank You! FlyJet777 (talk) 14:06, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

I'm afraid your question is not clear enough. 'I am facing difficulties' may have many meanings. Are you asking how to technically add more data rows to the table? Or are you asking for sources with data to be added in more rows? Or may be you're asking what categories of data should be added to the table as new columns? Please state more clearly what your specific problem is. --CiaPan (talk) 14:34, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
@FlyJet777: Oops, forgot to ping. --CiaPan (talk) 14:35, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
Good morning. I've looked at your table (*they can be a pain*) and made two changes that should get you where you're looking to be. First of all, I changed the rowspan from 4 to 3, and that stopped it from attempting to create an extra column after the Business/Economy/Total section. I also added in the table cell definitions for the rest of the cells - you can either leave them blank as they are, or continue to fill them in. Hope this helps. - NsTaGaTr (talk) 14:37, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
@NsTaGaTr: Thank You very much for your help! Now the whole page is looking perfect. I will add an image to the fleet section very soon. Well.... Do you think that the article: Atrak Air does not need more sources? Because there were very less sources available on Google. Once again.. Thank You!! FlyJet777 (talk) 15:12, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
I'm glad I was able to help with the fleet section issue. As far as sources go, the more the merrier. With the airline being around for a few years now, there should hopefully be some mentions in flight/commercial air publications. You can probably also look towards IATA and it's associates for data, as well as flight tracking websites and photo consolidation sites (*flightaware.com, airliners.net, etc*) With Iran being 'isolated' as it is, who knows what data is out there. Best of luck! - NsTaGaTr (talk) 15:29, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
@NsTaGaTr: Thank You very much for your complement! Ummm.. Can you tell me What should I add to show that the Atrak Air page is created by me? FlyJet777 (talk) 15:46, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
The article's history page shows you started the article and have done 49 of the 52 edits to date - that is all the "credit" you get, we do not include editors names in any articles - although you can include it on your user page in a list of "articles I have created" or similar - Arjayay (talk) 16:01, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
As stated above, this is an encyclopedia; as such, articles are not attributed to specific authors, and are a piece of the community as a whole. Keep an eye on it, and have an internal pride in your creation, but also watch it bloom as others add their findings as well. - NsTaGaTr  16:20, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Copyright issues (text in an online source supplied by our organisation)

An article on the Scarborough Art Gallery has not been accepted because it includes text which has been supplied by the Gallery (and is copyright to Scarborough Museums Trust which runs the Gallery) but which been published online elsewhere by a tourism organisation. How much of an edit is required to make the text acceptably different? 185.4.159.12 (talk) 09:58, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

As clearly stated at Draft:Scarborough Art Gallery (with my bolding for emphasis)
Not all of the article appears to have been copied and pasted, but all parts that were will need to be totally rewritten to comply with policy.
This does not mean just changing a few words here and there, but totally rewriting it in your own words - this is not as easy as it sounds, as you will tend to keep close to the original - try reading the original and then writing your new text without referring to it, (other than to check facts at the end), rather than altering the existing version - Arjayay (talk) 10:41, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Restoration of a deleted update to my drafts

Hello, i'd like a previous edit of the page Ginetta Cars to be saved to my drafts please so I can finish updating and send to some of the administrators to approve and make sure I'm posting my COI correctly. RuthHarrisonGinetta (talk) 09:57, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse. The material which you added to Ginetta Cars can't be restored to any part of Misplaced Pages (including draft space), because it was a copyright violation. I am surprised that the editor who reverted your edits didn't explain on your user talk page, but the reason for the reversion can be seen on the article history page. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:03, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Notability and references

I understand that in order to establish notability for my Emmanuel Navon page, I need more references which are not written by Navon himself. 1)Should I delete all the references I cited that he wrote or just add new ones? 2)Should the new ones be articles, etc, that quote him but not directly about him (for example, reference number 52)? 3)What is the ideal type of references to have when writing an Misplaced Pages entry about a person? Thank you.79.181.247.66 (talk) 09:02, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Convenience link: Emmanuel Navon (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views).
References to material written by the subject, or to interviews with the subject, are not independent. Such references may, rarely, be acceptable in WIkipedia, but can do nothing to establish the subject's notability. An ideal reference is to a reliable independent published source, and has significant discussion of the subject. Maproom (talk) 09:46, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
@79.181.247.66: & @Maproom::The subject's notability is significantly indicated by the nature of leading Anglophone and Francophone media outlets who invite, broadcast and publish him on his topic of expertise, International Relations (Israel). These are amply cited on the page. He is an instructor at Tel Aviv University and the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, two well-established degree-granting institutions of higher education. Of particular interest, I should think, is that media audiences would have access to background about him as a commentator by accessing and reading his page here in English, and perhaps later in other interwiki projects. I strongly support the subject's notability and suggest removing the Maintenance tag on the page. -- Deborahjay (talk) 13:04, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
So which of the 65 now 93 references on the page actually verify this notability? Maproom (talk) 13:30, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Problem with dead link

Over at Treeing Walker Coonhound there's a new user trying to cite the Continental Kennel Club (unreliable) site in order to prove weight. I rewrote most of the TWC article and hunted all over the web for sources a while back, and I sourced the weight from Dog Channel.com (the website for Dog Fancy magazine). The link's dead now and the site seems to have changed domains. I thought it was OK to leave a formatted dead link as such if somebody vouched for the content being in that source. The user did also try to cite a book, but it disagrees with the AKC by about 20 lbs, and I'd trust the AKC more than the book (I've seen just enough false statements in those breed books not to trust them implicitly). I have a problem citing the AKC, though, because for some reason my phone can't seem to copy or capture the url for a PDF, which is how their standard is available. Anybody got comments or suggestions? White Arabian Filly 22:56, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi @White Arabian Filly: Welcome to the Teahouse! I would recommend checking if the dogchannel.com article is available on the Wayback Machine. "Major app reviews" needed for page approval. Where to post and how many?

Wiki editor says the page I created needs "Major app reviews" before it is approved. Where should I post links to these? Do I need to link them within the content somehow? How many should I post? MelodyCS (talk) 20:54, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to the Teahouse, MelodyCS. With regards to Draft:Melody Composer Squared, I'm confident they meant that you need to cite reviews of Melody CS in major technology magazines and websites. The ideal way is to pick up information about the app form these reviews, and after everything you write, you cite the review you read it from. For how to do this, see Help:Referencing for beginners. There isn't a fixed number you need. You need enough to 1) prove that the app has received significant coverage, and 2) have everything fact you write to be verifiable from such reviews. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 21:01, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
OK. I've got various technology Web sites that have reviewed the app. Do I need to cite them within the article with a separate paragraph or or do I just add links to the references?

MelodyCS (talk) 21:01, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, MelodyCS. Please follow the instructions at Referencing for beginners. Cullen Let's discuss it 22:17, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

How to upload phpto

Wikimedia Commons licensing tutorial

I was able to easily upload one photo a few days ago that went into my infobox. Now I want to add a photo into the text of my draft article and I am getting warning: We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons. I have made more than 10 edit in Misplaced Pages, and I am a user 4-5 days in . . . I did not take the photo, but it is from a family album. Jami van Haaften https://en.wikipedia.org/User:Jamivanahaaften/sandbox Jamivanahaaften (talk) 20:42, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi @Jamivanahaaften: I have linked an image to the Misplaced Pages Commons licensing policy below. In simple terms, users cannot upload a photo taken by someone else to the Commons, unless if the photographer grants permission. The full policy can be viewed here: Commons:Licensing. Happy editing! Daylen (talk) 01:53, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
This is a file from a family photo album more than 50 years old - is it not public domain after 50 years?

Jamivanahaaften (talk) 02:57, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Jamivanahaaften the short answer: most likely not. The long answer: it depends. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 03:46, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
As a general rule, copyright begins when a photo is first published, which means reproduced for public distribution. Putting a photo in a family album is not publication. If the photo is first published now, then copyright starts now, and belongs to the photographer, or their estate if they have died. Cullen Let's discuss it 05:09, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Editing For Neutrality?

Is it unethical to edit articles for neutral wording? Such as changing pronouns in religious articles that are not in direct quotes? While I understand that this may be seen as disrespectful by those who view their own version of faith to be the absolute truth, because this is an encyclopedia and not the sister-site "Conservapedia", my own personal belief is that all religious articles be treated with a certain degree of neutrality.Risky shift287 (talk) 19:28, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse, Risky shift287. I can assure you that Conservapedia is not a sister site and has no connection at all to either Misplaced Pages or the Wikimedia Foundation. As for your question, it is always appropriate to edit articles to bring them into compliance with the neutral point of view. However, be sure that you are not inadvertently imposing your own point of view. As for the use of pronouns, a specific example would be helpful. Cullen Let's discuss it 19:36, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Hi Risky shift287 and welcome to the Teahouse. Whether a pronoun for a deity should be capitalized is covered in Misplaced Pages's manual of style. See Misplaced Pages:Manual of Style#Religions, deities, philosophies, doctrines. StarryGrandma (talk) 19:54, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Sorry for the mistake Cullen, just spent an entertaining half hour reading some "articles" on Conservapedia... And absolutely will comply about inadvertently inserting my viewpoints.

delay in the review process

I submitted a draft article for review on Jan 15th (draft: operations management for services). It has a yellow review box added near the bottom that said the review would take a week or more. Since it's been more than three weeks, I am wondering what has happened to it? Is this article currently under review and do you have any idea how much longer it will take? I am afraid it may have become lost in the system or is delayed for some reason.Thanks.Rgschroeder12 (talk) 15:47, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Is it Draft:Operations Management for Services? It helps, when asking a question here, to provide a link to the draft or article in question. One reason for the delay in review may be that the draft is very long. I would also comment very briefly that there is a stray heading between the "References" heading and the list of references. Also, we don't normally end a Misplaced Pages article with a "Summary". It hasn't been lost. Review may be taking a long time because it is long. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:46, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Can't get Infobox to display properly

Can someone take a look at the infobox on the page for Anice Das. I have copied it from another page for a speed skater and it seems like everything is structured properly. If I make a (visual) edit to the Infobox and save the changes it displays correctly. Then when I save the changes to the page itself, only the name and the medals section display, the rest doesn't show.

Tomdejong14 (talk) 15:41, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Tomdejong14. I must admit this has me perplexed as well. I managed to fix the issue with this edit, but...I'm not sure why it worked. I cut the infobox out, pasted it back in, and it was suddenly working right. Maybe one of the other editors could elaborate as to what, exactly, I did? Howicus (Did I mess up?) 17:55, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
It looks as if there may have been some strange characters before the = signs for the various parameters, but I don't know what the characters were. --David Biddulph (talk) 18:35, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
There were non-breaking spaces instead of normal spaces. Firefox converts them to normal spaces when I copy them but Opera was able to copy them so they could be examined in the "Characters" field at https://r12a.github.io/apps/conversion/. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:34, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

I'm actually glad it wasn't just me who struggled with this :-) I made the edits in Firefox but copy-pasted the complete Infobox from the source of another skater's page, so I have no idea how the strange spaces were added. Either way, thank you very much Howicus for fixing this! Tomdejong14 (talk) 15:26, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Stuck in the Incubator

Please can someone tell us why the Kabiye (kbp) Misplaced Pages is still in the incubator? This Misplaced Pages was initiated in June 2014, and since then has been steadily growing with daily contributions from a small group of dedicated volunteers. It now has over 850 articles], many of which have graphics, infoboxes categories and links. The 500 most used interface messages have been translated. The Kabiye Misplaced Pages has many more articles, and more depth than other minority African languages that have made it onto the real platform. Ghiutun made a Request for a new language in May 2016 which I seconded, but there's been no reply. Kabiye does not even appear on the scroll-down list on this page. What more do we need to do? We're feeling invisible and fed up. Gnangbade (talk) 15:32, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

This seems like something that should be handled at the Incubator project, not on the English Misplaced Pages. You should be able to find the help you need there. Sam Walton (talk) 16:27, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

OK, thanks Gnangbade (talk) 20:30, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

COI edit request - no response

Hi, If you look on the Nova Science Publishers Talk page I am a COI editor who made a request almost 2 weeks ago to have 1 line added. It's very neutral and sourced. I have not heard anything. Yet every other time I've made a request it's been denied within hours. I understand there is a backlog but I am also aware there are at least 20 editors watching this page. I do not know why no one is helping me but I would like to know how long I am supposed to wait before requesting this edit again? And if I am suppose to make the request again, do I simply go to the talk page and ask someone to look at it for me or do I re-enter the line I want added with the reference again? User pages / areas. Place for lists of articles

Thought I saw a sample of this...just a list of Misplaced Pages articles (so I don't have to have tons of browser bookmarks!) Now all I can find is the Book area. Is this the right spot for these? Would like functionality of grouping or re-ordering if that is an issue. Thanks Suemactal (talk) 13:24, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, Suemactal, and welcome to the Teahouse. If you want to keep a list of articles that you are planning to work on, for example, or a list of articles you have created, you can start a page in your own user space for this, such as: User:Suemactal/Article list or User:Suemactal/Articles I have created or that sort of thing. You can put any text on your user pages that you like, as long as it's not a copyright violation, not promotional and is related to your Misplaced Pages editing.—Anne Delong (talk) 13:46, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Anne Suemactal (talk) 14:39, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
OOPS! I clicked on the text in your response (User:Suemactal/Article list) and created a page (I think). I take that it's now an orphan & I should started from my existing/main user page right? I only added one thing...suggestions for next step before I muck up anything more? Suemactal (talk) 14:54, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
It does no harm to have extra pages in your user space, Suemactal; but if you want rid of it, just stick {{db-author}} at the top, and an admin will be along to delete it for you.But I see that you're using it at present, which is fine. --ColinFine (talk) 17:54, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Need help with adding publication dates to references / reflist

Newbie here. refs for article have retrieved date but I'd like to add publication date. Thought I WAS able to edit that section before but since other changes and added references to that article it seems like editing is different now. Thanks in advance. Suemactal (talk) 13:20, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hey Suemactal. The parameter to add the date is simply |date= 7 February 2017. You should be able to paste that inside the cite template and it should work its magic. So instead of using:
{{Cite news|url=https://www.wired.com/2016/03/got-hulu-netflix-need-app-search/|title=Got Hulu and Netflix? You Need an App to Search It All|last=Pierce|first=David|newspaper=WIRED|access-date=2017-02-07|language=en-US}}
...you would use:
{{Cite news|url=https://www.wired.com/2016/03/got-hulu-netflix-need-app-search/|title=Got Hulu and Netflix? You Need an App to Search It All|last=Pierce|first=David|newspaper=WIRED|access-date=2017-02-07|language=en-US|date= 10 March 2016}}.
As to why "editing is different". I'm afraid you'd have to be a bit more specific for us to figure out exactly what you mean. TimothyJosephWood 13:29, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
If you are saying that you don't see the date field when using the "cite web" template from the edit toolbar, you can use the button to "Show/hide extra fields". --David Biddulph (talk) 13:41, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks to you both. I was looking in the wrong place. I got it now. BUT (allways a butt) I notice now with the 5 cite dates I just added that the order in which the data (author/pub/title/etc) appears differs a bit. Is this in the cite web template itself? Can the order be changed on the fly? If I need to go back to school, do tell me.. Thanks again. Suemactal (talk) 14:31, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
It doesn't matter which order the parameters appear in the wikitext, the template will decide on the display order.--David Biddulph (talk) 15:04, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Ok Thanks. Suemactal (talk) 15:54, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello How can I create a page or article on A celebrity, place or something ?? Sawongam (talk) 11:06, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, SawOnGam. Misplaced Pages is a big and complicated thing to work on, and creating a new article that is accepted is one of the harder tasks. I would very strongly advise you to spend a few weeks, or months, learning about editing Misplaced Pages by making improvements to some of the many articles we already have that are inadequate before you attempt to create a new article. But please read your first article to get an idea of the task. --ColinFine (talk) 12:26, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Need to Rewrite Article "Endoca"

Can anyone help to rewrite this article Endoca? Wikibaji 10:56, 7 February 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikibaji (talkcontribs)

my article draft https://en.wikipedia.org/Draft:Dr._Keyur_Parikh is rejected

The reviewer has stated lack of notability. I've given enough references that establish notability.

Niyu13 (talk) 10:07, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

I agree that Parikh is probably notable, Niyu13, but I can't see that the current references establish this, as I don't think any of them is both substantial and independent. I would also reject the article on the basis that it doesn't really say anything about him, just lists his awards and fellowships. And that is itself a symptom of the notability problem: if you haven't got substantial sources about a subject, there's nothing that can go in an article.
Also, though it isn't grounds for rejecting an article, the references would be much easier to evaluate if they had proper bibliographic details, rather than just plain URLs. See Refencing for beginners. --ColinFine (talk) 12:17, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

what is parsing another editor?

Hello, I've been told I am parsing another editor and that this is a form of disruptive editing. I read the page on disruptive editing and it is definitely something I don't want to do, but I didn't see parsing on that page and am not sure what it means... is there a page on parsing in the context of other editors I could read to make sure I am not messing up? Thank you!G1729 (talk) 02:52, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse, G1729. One definition of "parse" from Dictionary.com is "to analyze (something, as a speech or behavior) to discover its implications or uncover a deeper meaning". Accordingly, my conclusion is that the editor who made that comment believed that you were trying to discern some hidden meaning in another editor's comment, and that effort of yours disrupted the conversation. I am not saying that is true but rather, I am trying to help you understand the comment. In general, it is best to interpret another editor's comments based on the plain meaning of their words, rather than engaging in amateur exegesis. This is an aspect of assuming good faith, which is an important behavioral expectation here. Cullen Let's discuss it 03:23, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
G1729: you were not accused of "parsing another editor". You were asked, at Talk:Executive_Order_13769, to "stop parsing other editor's talk page posts". I believe that this referred to the way you were interspersing your responses with what they had written, making it hard to understand, instead of placing them all together below it. Maproom (talk) 09:15, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
@Maproom: Thanks, I agree. I replied to Cullen's user talk page with something similar as what you describe and think I fixed the problem before your reply, but thank you for looking into this; I should've provided a reply here, too. If you think "parsing other editor's talk page posts" still appears to be an issue, let me know what I could do to correct it. Thanks! G1729 (talk) 18:33, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

review oroantral fistula page

Hi. I have made a draft for a page titled oroantral fistula page link: https://en.wikipedia.org/Draft:Oroantral_fistula_(2) and waiting for submission. The current reviewer have to pass it on to someone else due to having too much history with the page. Can anyone help me with the review of this page? Justryingtohelp (talk) 00:15, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Justryingtohelp: Draft:Oroantral_fistula_(2) is in the queue of drafts awaiting review, which is badly backlogged. When it is eventually reviewed, it is likely to be rejected, because, as explained in the comments at the top. there is also an older draft Draft:Oroantral fistula. Reviewers are overworked hard-pressed editors, who have better uses for their time than sorting out the mess of two rival drafts for the same subject. Maproom (talk) 09:31, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Maproom I've already cleared up all the copyright issues and merged both drafts (as indicated by the previous reviewers) together into the link that I've posted. I guess for now I'll just have to wait until it is time for it to be reviewed. Any estimation of when it will be reviewed? Justryingtohelp (talk) 11:18, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

why are we being deleted the next day ?

Hi - my name is Debbie and I am helping my dad Karl.. on page: VPB 121.

I logged in and went to vpb 121 - edit - added our note - preview - save.

logged out/logged in and it was there but the next day - it had been deleted.

I don't know why.....

We want to add under Aug.7:

CORRECTION ON DATE AND EVENT: As noted above, Aug 7th, one on the squadrons were shot down/with no survivors is incorrect. On August 11, 1945, PB4Y-2 Squadron 121 Crew 3, was shoot down in the Sagami Wan Bay (aka Tokyo Bay). Unbeknown to the other plane, there were eight survivors and four were lost at sea. All eight survivors were captured by the Japanese and incarcerated in the Ofuna Camp. All eight P.O.W.s were released after the war. This note is made by one of those survivors: Karl C. Gaber. For pictures and story see Ref: Sheet #721003 PB4Y-2 Privateers insert.

THANK YOU FOR ANY ASSISTANCE, DEBBIE AND KARL KARL G. (talk) 22:52, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi KARL G. and welcome to the Teahouse. You added a comment to an encyclopedia article rather than rewriting a section. A correction suggestion should go on the talk page of the article, not into the text of article itself. StarryGrandma (talk) 23:01, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
KARL G., has the story been written up anywhere but on a reference sheet that comes with a set of decals as described here? The men got medals which are recorded. StarryGrandma (talk) 23:29, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Hi, KARL G. and Deb. Two things. First, Misplaced Pages's terms of service clearly state that an account is intended for the exclusive use of one user. You cannot share it. Secondly, it appears Dad may be writing about something he is directly connected with. KARL G. = Karl C. Graber, ya? Although not forbidden (unlike two people using the same account), it is highly discouraged. See WP:COI. The reason for this is quite simple. In an encyclopedia, you do not actually write about the subject as you would in an essay or a thesis. Instead an encyclopedia is a summary of what has been written about a subject in reliable sources. It is hard for a person who has been involved in something as traumatic as a battle to seperate themselves enough from the event to be able to accurately paraphrase whatever the sources say about it. To state it another way, if you have a book and an eyewitness describing the same thing in different ways, we are going to include what the book says and discount the eyewitness completely. John from Idegon (talk) 04:46, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

An Edit Battle

Hello folks. I am an occasional editor with an interest in education. I've been keeping track of Swiss UMEF University which is a fake university in Switzerland, notable for being the foundation institution for a real university in Afghanistan. If I include the current owner's name, it gets edited out. If I include the current status of the institution as unaccredited, it gets edited out. Both entries contain references that show what's written is the case. What should I do?Bizetshine (talk) 21:37, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Discuss it on the article's talk page. If you can't come to a consensus with the other editor(s), then try dispute resolution. Don't engage in an edit war. RudolfRed (talk) 22:33, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks RudolfRed. Currently the talk page is full of more advertising which I didn't really feel right about erasing, and there's been no engagement at all with my concerns.Bizetshine (talk) 22:44, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
(ec) Hi Bizetshine. Don't link to external sites in the text of an article instead of writing a reference. Read Help:Referencing for beginners. You will also need to find a source that says the university is unaccredited. A reference to source that does not list the university is not sufficient. StarryGrandma (talk) 22:38, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks StarryGrandma, that's not me doing the external link. The reference is in fact the reference list used by the Swiss authorities. If you're not on the list you're not recognized. The Swiss government doesn't make a negative list, which does not mean that you can never say a Swiss institution is unrecognized. You can.Bizetshine (talk) 22:44, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Hello Bizetshine and welcome to the Teahouse! Looking through the article, I see many unorthodox citations - not to news, magazine or journal articles - and instead to links like this: https://www.unglobalcompact.org. "UMEF" doesn't appear anywhere on the main page when you follow that link, and if you search the UN Global Compact website, all you see is that UMEF is now "Delisted... Expelled due to failure to communicate progress." When I search for information I find nothing, not even in books.google.com, which is highly unusual for the subject of an encyclopedia article.
Do you know of any high quality, independent, and reliable sources that discuss this university with any depth? If not, it is likely the case that the Swiss UMEF University does not meet Misplaced Pages's general notability guidelines and should be deleted. -Darouet (talk) 22:39, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
An understandable concern Darouet. Notability as far as I saw it at the time was this: Dunya University of Afghanistan (DUA) is in fact a recognized private university in Afghanistan, and it was founded on the basis of Swiss UMEF University (which has existed as an unrecognized school since the 80s that actually has small facilities and a hostel). Graduates would get a dual degree, one from UMEF and one from Dunya, and there was obvious pride in the guy running both institutions. Currently the actual Afghan Dunya site has scrubbed mention of "UMEF" and "Swiss" (although their Misplaced Pages page is touting the affiliation and that ain't my writing) and so maybe this is going down the memory hole as a successful diploma mill operation that got the job done. I could see it being deleted as its existence might be just as a scrap of paper if the guy running it is covering his tracks. Edits on the article come from Switzerland, which is interesting. Bizetshine (talk) 22:56, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Whoops, I think I'm wrong about scrubbing. Continuing touting at the reference.. Bizetshine (talk) 23:04, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
I blanked the talk page section. It was nothing but an old copy of the article. Meters (talk) 23:06, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
I'm wondering why we have an article on this at all. Meters (talk) 23:15, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

@Bizetshine, Meters, StarryGrandma, and RudolfRed: I've proposed the article be deleted. I hope nobody is upset at this? If you would like to contest the proposal you can remove the proposed deletion template and we can move discussion to the article talk page or other appropriate venues. -Darouet (talk) 23:31, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

No objection from me. From what I can see some of the claims in the article are not supported by the cites. I have yet to find anything solid that can be verified. Meters (talk) 23:44, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Just in passing: @Darouet, Bizetshine, Meters, StarryGrandma, and RudolfRed: This appears to be another scam – see, for example, this article. If it's a scam and a few more sources can be found then it might be better to clean up the page and keep it rather than bin it. I haven't removed the prod, though. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 08:51, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Notable for all the wrong reasons... Meters (talk) 18:37, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

accepted protocol for dealing with Requested article?

Hi again. There is a request for an "HY antigen" article (#36 under "Uncategorized" at https://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia:Requested_articles/Natural_sciences/Biology/Genetics). There in fact is H-Y antigen. I always learned the term without the hyphen. I know how to move H-Y antigen to HY antigen, but I'm thinking it may be better to simply create an HY antigen page as just a redirect to H-Y antigen. What does the community think about this sort of issue? Thanks, DennisPietras (talk) 20:37, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello again, DennisPietras. The first step is to determine which is the most common name in the majority of the high quality English language sources that discuss the topic in some detail. See WP:COMMONNAME for details. If necessary, move the existing article, and then create a redirect at the other name. Cullen Let's discuss it 21:34, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
You could also move H-Y antigen to HY antigen if you find it's warranted, which will automatically create a redirect. Justin15w (talk) 22:47, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks folks! Much to my surprise, HY is only slightly in the majority on medline, so I'm going to leave H-Y as is and make the redirect to it from HY. DennisPietras (talk) 02:06, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Edit another members Draft or create my own?

In short, I came across a draft of an article that's currently been rejected twice for lack of 'notable' references. My question stems from that. Do I update this other members draft to include more references, then give it a major content overhaul to bring it in line with other 'similar' articles, or start my own draft and push from there. I don't want to step on this other members toes, so to speak, but I also don't want there to be two efforts running in conjunction. Any advice would be helpful and appreciated. - NsTaGaTr (talk) 20:15, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi NsTaGaTr. I assume you are talking about Draft:The Dollop. It is fine to improve an article by another editor when it is in Draft space rather than their own user space. Many Draft articles have been rescued and improved by other Misplaced Pages editors. See all the rescued draft articles at User:Anne Delong/AfC content rescued from db-g13. StarryGrandma (talk) 21:24, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks - I just didn't want to cause any drama if/when the original author came back to it and saw it in a different state than when they left. - NsTaGaTr (talk) 22:04, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
User:NsTaGaTr - No one owns a Misplaced Pages article or a Misplaced Pages draft, and changes to them should not cause drama. The objective with any draft should be to improve to where it will be accepted. If a user wanted to be the only editor of a work in progress, they would and could keep it in user space, where it is still not exclusively theirs, but they are its steward. Go ahead and improve it. Robert McClenon (talk) 22:47, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
NsTaGaTr, it would be polite to drop the other editor a note on their user talk page to tell them that you intend to work on it, and se if they want to discuss anything with you. But you don't have to. --ColinFine (talk) 22:47, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Both are very valid points. I'll shoot them a message, and if I don't get a response in a certain amount of time, I'll start drafting up changes, for the greater good. - NsTaGaTr (talk) 22:50, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

what else do i need?

I just got another deletion notice for my article. What else do i need to keep it or fight the deletion?Parwaaz hasan (talk) 19:34, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Parwaaz hasan and welcome to the Teahouse. Your article, Hazrat Shah Sufi Khaja Abul Hasan Chishty has no sources as references for what the article says. You have a list of books the subject has written. What you need are references that have been written ABOUT him, not by him. Please read Misplaced Pages:Verifiability. For a subject to have a Misplaced Pages article he must have already been written about elsewhere, in reliable sources independent of the subject. StarryGrandma (talk) 22:12, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Trying to delete an article

I am trying to delete the article for URL_(rapper) because it is simply copied from his facebook page and is otherwise unverified because every other link is broken or useless. I have tried adding tags to the beginning of the page to make it an article for deletion and the proposed deletion but they don't seem to change as desired, or am I doing something wrong. Thanks.Higthomas (talk) 15:23, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

I've deleted the page - you may find this policy helpful in the future -- Samtar 15:28, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Samtar, Before this was deleted the question that really should have been asked is, what came first, our article that was created 20 April 2010 or the facebook page where the oldest post is 3 October 2010 come first? There is a strong possibility that the article came first and it was copied to Facebook, not the other way around. - GB fan 15:39, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. I had read that, hence why I thought it was suitable, I was just failing at the actual deleting process.Higthomas (talk) 15:39, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Don't able to find a Source for an Article.

Hi to everyone. I recently searched the Air India aircraft list on Google. And it shows that they have a total of 109 aircraft and 21 on order. And it also shows that Air India has 23 Dreamliners instead of 22 (VT-ANX is 23rd Dreamliner). But if I have to add it to the The Air India Wiki page, I have to give a reliable source. And that I am not able to find that. The sources which are on Google has only images. Should I add that or leave that for now?? Can someone help me please? Thank You! FlyJet777 (talk) 14:54, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Hey FlyJet777. Misplaced Pages generally lags behind the "truth", especially on topics where information can change rapidly or continuously. This is, as your rightly point out, because information on Misplaced Pages has to be backed up by reliable sources. So before we can write about it, the thing first needs to exist, and second be around long enough for a reliable source to take notice and write about it themselves.
So as a general rule, we err on the side of "definitely recently correct" rather than "potentially currently outright false". If the information has in fact changed, and the topic is in fact notable, then it should only be a matter of time before a reliable source becomes available, and if Misplaced Pages is slightly out of date in the interim, it's just one of the necessary constraints of our policy. TimothyJosephWood 15:19, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
So you mean that I have leave it until some reliable sources come? Thank You! FlyJet777 (talk) 15:29, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
FlyJet777: In a word, yes. However, keep in mind that the reliability of the source needs to match the size or relative weight of the claim it supports. So for example, we have exceedingly high standards for reliability when it comes to medical information (see WP:MEDRS), but on the other end of the spectrum, it is perfectly acceptable to cite even social media sometimes for mundane and uncontroversial personal details (see WP:SELFPUB). If all you are looking to change is something as minor and uncontroversial as the size of their fleet, probably even a reference to their official website (if the information is actually there) would be reliable enough to support the content. TimothyJosephWood 15:49, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Ok. Thank you very much for your response. Well.. How many years does it take to gain the adminship? FlyJet777 (talk) 15:57, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Umm...There is no formal requirement as far as time spent on Misplaced Pages or number of contributions made. Some current administrators, especially the old-timers, may have gotten the bit after several months. Others who have been here for ten years or more aren't admins, never have been, and plenty flatly don't want to ever be.
Being an admin really just means that you have some extra buttons to push, most of which are for...essentially janitorial maintenance: things like deleting clearly inappropriate articles, blocking obvious vandals, adding protections to pages when it's requested...generally fairly boring stuff. But other than that, being an admin isn't really a special status. Everyone's more-or-less on equal footing around here, and experience and perspective matter much more than what user access level you may have. TimothyJosephWood 16:17, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Ok. I have understood. Hey.. What do you think of my edits here on Misplaced Pages? Need explanation or good work? Thank You! FlyJet777 (talk) 16:55, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
FlyJet777: I'm afraid we have a bit different subject areas, but I would encourag you to consider participating in Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Aviation if you haven't already. Seems right up your ally. TimothyJosephWood 17:33, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Conflict of interest

Hi. I would like to edit the page for International Alert, the charity I work at. This was recently deleted and written from scratch but there are a number of significant details missing. The page has also been flagged and one concern is 'conflict of interest' (the author has declared having a very loose connection to International Alert). As an employee I obviously have a much closer connection to the organisation, so I'm concerned the changes I make won't be accepted and may result in the page getting deleted again (especially as it will involve some heavy editing/re-writing). I plan to keep the style very factual with plenty of external links but please can someone advise me on the best way to amend the page and get the flags removed? Many thanks.82.108.6.210 (talk) 12:35, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello anon. You may request changes on the article's talk page by including {{request edit}} in your comment. Changes suggested should be precise and supported by reliable sources which should be provided so that the information can be verified. There is currently a backlog of 102 requested edits, so it may take a little while for someone to respond, but a volunteer will address your suggestions and accept, modify or decline them. Establishing notability for Emmanuel Navon page

I received a notification on the Emmanuel Navon page that it "may not meet Misplaced Pages's notability guideline for academics. Please help to establish notability by citing reliable secondary sources that are independent of the topic and provide significant coverage of it beyond its mere trivial mention." I have cited many sources which I thought were independent and secondary, as well as referred to many scholarly articles written by Navon. Can someone please advise on what may be the issue with meeting notability requirements here and how I can improve it? Thanks!109.65.30.14 (talk) 11:32, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

I have worked through the first ten references at Emmanuel Navon, and found that none of them help to establish notability. If you believe that some of the other 55 references are independent and reliable, and include significant discussion of Navon, can you please tell us which? Maproom (talk) 12:18, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
A large number of these "references" have been written by Navon himself. That's not appropriate. References should be to published material written by journalists, critics, or other authors who are not connected with Navon.—Anne Delong (talk) 05:23, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. Would you say it is better not to reference articles authored by Navon at all or just to add additional ones that are not connected with him?79.181.247.66 (talk) 08:25, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
And would, for example, reference number 52 be a good reference? It quotes Navon but is not written about him.79.181.247.66 (talk) 08:30, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
@Anne Delong: & @Maproom:: please see my remarks at WP:Teahouse#Notability and references dated just now. I suggest a consideration of notability by the subject's academic activity and commentating in his field of expertise for major Francophone/Anglophone broadcast and print media outlets. -- Deborahjay (talk) 13:09, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
I am not questioning Navon's notability. But it needs to be made evident to a reviewer, by acceptable references. I think it's unreasonable to expect a reviewer to search through (now) almost 100 references, looking for anything that is both independent of the subject and has significant discussion of him. Maproom (talk) 13:37, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Deborahjay, the links to Navon's own work should all be removed as references; if some of these are highly cited academic papers, they could be added in a "Selected publications" section without links, in the way that his books are included now, instead of being references. references for those sections should be book or article reviews or other publications which write about his publications. a discussion, it's best to link to a reference rather than refer to it by number, because the numbers change; 52 appear to be a paper written by Navon now. References to social media, such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, are not independent, reliable, published sources and should be removed.—Anne Delong (talk) 13:42, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you, @Maproom: and @Anne Delong:, for your swift and helpful response. I generally don't create pages so was unfamiliar with the sensible point Anne so clearly raises about not using the subject's publications as references. As he serves the international (mainstream, not social) media as a commentator, documentation of such instances would likely be with his authorship - but this is an editing issue I can pursue elsewhere than the Teahouse. -- Deborahjay (talk) 13:53, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

my entry was deleted.

my entry, Four Primary Days, was deleted. this happened two times previously. i want to be able to post it again and it to not be removed. the reason for removing my entry was totally bogus. What can I do about this? 50.161.46.26 (talk) 10:34, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

When your submission was deleted, the reason will have been given on the rejection notice. Can you recall what it said? Maproom (talk) 12:35, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
The article was created and re-created multiple times — Four primary days (deleted twice) and Four Primary Days - Presidenial Primary Reform (sic) (deleted once) The details for the rationale behind the deletion are at User talk:DouglasRoberts1986. Basically "(A11: Article about a subject obviously invented by article creator or associate, which does not credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject." I haven't seen the deleted articles but they seem to have been based solely on the contents and ideas at http://fourprimarydays.blogspot.com. If there is no significant coverage of this movement in entirely independent sources, I'm afraid the article doesn't stand a chance of being kept. There were some proposals to reduce the presidential primary elections to four days back in 2008. But they don't seem to have gained a lot of traction and it's unclear if they are related to the movement espoused on that 2013 blog. Voceditenore (talk) 13:09, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Saving a half-edited page.

New Editor: I want to copy-edit a page but I need to do more than one thing. First I need to do the copy-edit, then I need to put in some Wikilinks that would explain the subject a little better. How do I save a half edited page? Then, how do I find the page again to complete the edit?

Cynewulfsfadr (talk) 10:19, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello Cynewulfsfadr. Welcome to Misplaced Pages. There is a link called "contributions" at the top of every page which shows every edit you make under you user account. The page you are working on has a "history" tab at the top which lists every edit that has been made and allows you to view older versions of the page.Charles (talk) 10:24, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
That was helpful Charles, thank you. I think that I am slightly overwhelmed at the scope and complexity of Misplaced Pages at the moment and am trying to find my way around it. At the same time I don't want to 'break' anything. (That is probably not possible but I'm sure that you understand the fear. - ooohhh, sounds like the definition of phobia doesn't it?. Thanks for the help. I'll be back! (Terminator 1).

Cynewulfsfadr (talk) 10:46, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello @Cynewulfsfadr:, if you are unsure about a specific edit, both the text editor and Visual Editor have a "Preview" function where you can check the effects of your edit before actually saving it. Anyway, most edits can be easily reverted - even if something goes wrong, you can usually "undo" such edits in the article's edit history. GermanJoe (talk) 16:03, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello Christin5P and welcome to Misplaced Pages! This topic is covered in depth at the following links: WP:IUP and WP:NFC. If your file is in the public domain or you created it completely by yourself, you may upload it using the wizard at c:COM:UPLOAD; if it is not free to use but you can write a proper fair use rationale, you may use WP:UPLOAD. Since you are a new user, I highly recommend that you use the WP:FFU (files for upload) process (click the link to get started and follow the instructions). This will allow more experienced Wikipedians to help you find out if the file you wish to use can be used on Misplaced Pages, and they will also upload it for you and tell you the filename. After that, all you have to do is include it in the article. Psiĥedelisto (talk) 08:53, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you I am waiting for permission to use some images if my page is successfully used on Misplaced Pages can I upload an image at a later date? Christin5P (talk) 09:05, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Definitely! You can always add to an article - a Misplaced Pages article is always a work in progress. :-] --Slashme (talk) 13:51, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Christian5P. Could you clarify what you mean by "my page"? Are you referring to your user page or are you referring to something else? Technically, we as editors do not have a "my page" when it comes to Misplaced Pages as explained in WP:OWN and WP:UP#OWN, but whether you can add an image often depends on where you want to add it. Non-free images are only allowed to be used in the article namespace per WP:NFCC#9, which means you cannot add such an image to a draft, a user page, a template, a talk page, or any page that is not in the article namespace. Even for articles, you have to clearly establish how the image's use satisfies WP:NFCCP. It's easier to use freely licensed or public domain images since such files are not subject the NFCCP. Even in those cases, however, image use is not always automatic and you may need to discuss adding it on the article's talk page as explained in WP:IUP#Adding images to articles if other editors do not feel the image should be added. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:45, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Edited version does not come automatically

Hi

I have edited 2 pages 1) Saoli Mitra & 2) Arpita Ghosh. I am their official correspondent.

However after editing when I type their names the edits do not appear. It is the undedited version that I can see. When I go to Revision History |I can see the changes that I made. How can I ensure that if their names are typed we will see the Edited version only.

Regards

Anirban Anirban Pancham Vaidic (talk) 8:40 am, Today (UTC+0)

Hi Anirban, and welcome to the teahouse. As official correspondent, you need to declare a WP:Conflict of interest in editing these articles. Your recent edits are still there, but you need to add references for each statement (see WP:Biographies of living persons). Perhaps you just need to purge the cache of your browser, or reload the page to see your latest version. Your earlier edits to Shaoli Mitra were reverted because they lacked references. See WP:Referencing for beginners. The duplicate page Saoli Mitra has been deleted. There is some advice on your talk page Dbfirs 09:02, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Hello, Anirban Pancham Vaidic. Please understand that if you are an official correspondent for those people, then it is not your job to edit the Misplaced Pages articles about them. Misplaced Pages has essentially no interest in what the subject of an article says about themselves, or what their friends, relatives, employees or associates say about them. It is only interested in what people unconnected with the subject have published about them. As an agent of those people, your role in Misplaced Pages's articles about them should be limited to making suggestions for edits (preferably with references to reliable published sources) on the article's talk page. Also, if you are in any sense paid for doing this work, you are required to declare the fact: see WP:PAID. --ColinFine (talk) 18:29, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
User:Anirban Pancham Vaidic - You are edit-warring by repeatedly making edits that have been reverted. Also, the tone of your edits is non-neutral. You are introducing peacock language after it is being reverted. You should stop edit-warring and stop inserting non-neutral language, or you may be blocked. Need your help.. my article is about to be deleted..!!!

Hi, I knew Mr. 'Dajikaka Gadgil for over 10 years. he was truly inspiring one. What should I do now to avoid being looked at it as promotional material? Kindly help me.. Thank you. Gaikwadyr (talk) 06:43, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

@Gaikwadyr: Whether you knew him was irrelevant. What you needed to do was cite multiple professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources that are not affiliated with the subject but still specifically about him. You also need to avoid saying stuff like "he was truly inspiring one" -- we're not a memorial site. Ian.thomson (talk) 06:54, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

(edit conflict)

Hello Gaikwadry and welcome to the Teahouse.
I'm not sure it is possible to save this particular article. Creating an entirely new biographical page on Misplaced Pages is fairly difficult, since there are many criteria that must be met before the article will be accepted. I took a look at the article and what stands out most about it is that is does not yet look anything like a Misplaced Pages article. It is not formatted like a WP article. It does not contain anything recognizable as references or citations, which means that it has not even attempted to establish that the subject of the article meets WP's notability standard.
We here at the Teahouse stand ready to help, but there are certain steps which you must accomplish on your own. We usually suggest that editors get considerable experience improving other articles before attempting to create new ones. There are just too many pitfalls that await a novice editor that lead to article deletion and editor frustration. Master the material at WP:Your first article and Help:Referencing for beginners and you'll begin to see some of the problems with your existing attempts so far.  —jmcgnh 06:57, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Are you allowed to have a clock on your talk page?

So, I've noticed how some people have clocks that tell the time of their time zone and the wikipedia time. I was wondering if Misplaced Pages allows for users to keep these kinds of clocks on their talk page so that other users would know if they would get a quick reply from the user. NewByzantine (talk) 23:59, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to the Teahouse, NewByzantine. It's certainly allowed. Here's what you can and cannot have on your user page (or the associated talk page): Misplaced Pages:User pages and here are talk page guidelines in general: Misplaced Pages:Talk page guidelines – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 00:13, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
If you see a lot of users doing something that requires more than introductory knowledge and none of them are getting blocked for it, it's safe to assume it's probably allowed. Ian.thomson (talk) 06:59, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

One edit or several?

When making changes to a long article, is it considered better form to make one big edit, or several small ones (e.g. one per section)? One edit makes less noise on Recent Changes and makes the edit history easier to skim, but with smaller ones, people can link to specific changes they want to discuss afterwards more easily. Mortee (talk) 20:39, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse, Mortee. There is no hard and fast rule on this, so I will give my opinion as an experienced editor. In most cases, I recommend a series of smaller edits as it is easier for other editors to evaluate the significance and impact of an individual edit that way. If edits are utterly non controversial, they may be grouped together. For example, our Manual of Style says that after first mention, we refer to people by their surnames, rather than their first name. So, if you change a dozen instances of first name to surname in a single edit, that should not be a problem. Consider a more complex edit, though, where you combine a series of non-controversial improvements like correcting typos with a possibly controversial change in content. If your edit is reverted, all the minor but clear improvements will be lost (at least temporarily) until consensus is reached. So, my recommendation when beginning to edit an existing article is to start out with the copy editing, the typo correction, and edits to comply with the Manual of Style. Then, move on to the more substantive content edits, explaining clearly in your edit summaries the thinking behind your edits. Cullen Let's discuss it 20:57, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! That makes sense to me. Mortee (talk) 21:01, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
@Mortee: I agree that there is no hard-and-fast rule. You are allowed to make each little change a separate edit or to apply a great mass of changes simultaneously as a single edit.
From the perspective of a source control system, which the edit history is a form of, you would like to see an approach something like one-edit per "reason", so that the reason given in the edit summary can be readily verified as making the associated changes justified/appropriate/understandable. Making a bunch of small changes, all for the same reason, adds to the burden of interested editors watching over the article. Similarly, making a whole bunch of unrelated changes in a single edit similarly burdens those editors with scrutinizing each change without knowing immediately what the motivation for that particular change is, even if several were listed in the edit summary.
In practice, however, an editor working on fixing one aspect of an article will also, along the way, spot some minor correction and include that with the edit - generally with a small annotation in the edit summary to acknowledge the additional change in case someone looking at it might think it was an accidental change.
I don't think I'm making any different recommendation than Cullen328, but perhaps this provides a bit of motivation: consider the editors who are also looking at the article as members of your team – how what you do may make things easier for them.
One other thing to be aware of: there are certain edit summaries such as "fixed a typo", "added a fact", "corrected what was WRONG" that are like red flags because they are sometimes (frequently?) used by vandals to deflect examination of their changes. As you continue to edit, you'll begin to recognize some of these behaviors.  —jmcgnh 05:03, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
its better to do many small edits, not one large edit. Vyvek (talk) 11:25, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
I'll add that, as someone who often reviews edits, I don't like to see unrelated content edits that cover more than one section. It's usually impossible to cover in one meaningful edit summary, and it's a multi-stage process to back out part of the edit. Meters (talk) 20:34, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

requesting review of new article

Hi all!

in the past years I contributed sparsely here and there, and since 2016 I decided to work regularly both on new articles and on expanding existing articles (specifically on performance art, sci-fi, writing and technology). So in December 2016 I created my first article from scratch to hone my editing skills . Despite the article having been edited (without any negative comment) by other, more experienced editors, it remains unreviewed. As a result, it is not indexed by search engines and essentially invisible on the Internet. My question:

Is it possible to request a New Page Reviewer to review the article?

I'm happy to follow any suggestion in regard to possible edits. I put a lot of work on that article, so it would be great to see it available to the larger WWW. Having this article reviewed and accepted also helps me moving forward onto other articles (editing or newer ones, I have a list of them).

Thank you in advance,

https://en.wikipedia.org/Marco_Donnarumma The pages is unreviewed as you can see by searching it on https://en.wikipedia.org/Special:NewPagesFeed

Blackpaleskin (talk) 16:17, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse. Your page was created only in late December. You will have seen from Special:NewPagesFeed that there are 16195 pages awaiting new page patrol, with a backlog to early October. If the backlog doesn't continue to get worse (which it has been doing since the new system was introduced) your article will probably be reviewed within the next 3 months (though of course you might be lucky and get reviewed earlier). Your article looks OK at first glance, but the "new page patrol" user right is now restricted (from about the time that unpatrolled pages became NOINDEXed). --David Biddulph (talk) 16:35, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Since other editors have made minor changes to the article and not tagged it, I have reviewed it. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:13, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks David for the clarification and Robert for such a prompt response! It is much appreciated, I'll move on onto my other articles in the TODO list. Re: amount of pages to review, I'd be happy to lend a hand, but not sure I would fit the requirements to become a New Page Patrol yet. Anyway, this is a bit off topic. I'll have a look and post a separate thread if needed. Thanks again.

HELP: 10 days and no one is participating is discussion regarding nomination for deletion

In ten or so days, there has been no participation from other editors, including the editor who nominated the article for deletion, and no response to the substantive changes and additional secondary sources that respond to the reasons for nomination for deletion.

Please see all at: https://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/National_Academy_of_Construction_(USA)#National_Academy_of_Construction_.28USA.29

I appreciate any help. I don't think the discussion process is working. More importantly, the changes to the article and further information provided demonstrate the reason for nomination for deletion has been overcome.

Thanks!!MaeInJune (talk) 16:03, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

User:MaeInJune - I have a brief comment, and that is that your comments at the deletion discussion are too long, difficult to read. I will read them. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:14, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
MaeInJune: as has already been explained in the deletion discussion, the draft in its current state is unnacceptable because it lacks references that establish its subject's notability. Such references must be to reliable independent published sources with significant discussion of the subject. At present the draft has 21 references: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 14, 17, and 20 are not independent, 8 merely lists the subject, 10, 15, 19 and 21 merely mention it, 9, 13 and 18 don't even mention it. 18 may be regarded as marginally acceptable. If you want the article to be accepted, someone will have to add better references. You will not help its acceptance at all by promising that you will improve the references without actually doing it; nor by writing at excessive length about why you believe the subject warrants an article; nor by pointing out some existing articles also lack adequate references. Maproom (talk) 19:57, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Robert McClenon, Maproom: This discussion has been super helpful. Clarification: When I wrote that I'd add sources, I did (see addition of the section Services). It would have helped if I'd have gotten feedback that said the sources needed "significant coverage." But I got no feedback. When I wrote that I'd add additional details relevant to the discussion and upload in the next few hours, I did. Again, I got no feedback/response. Thanks again. And especially for checking all of the sources and giving helpful and appropriate feedback. I really appreciate that generous effort. Enjoy the day.MaeInJune (talk) 20:59, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Wow, thanks. This is the feedback I've been wanting. If I move to my sandbox, what happens to the article title? (I will read more on drafts.)MaeInJune (talk) 20:28, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

If you move it, you can change its title as you do so. Maproom (talk) 20:52, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Is there any difference between moving the article to a draft space versus letting it be deleted (and it may be a draft for a long while)? MaeInJune (talk) 21:04, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

If you move it to draft space, there's a chance that someone else will come along and improve it. Maproom (talk) 21:30, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Robert McClenon, Maproom: This discussion has been super helpful. So my last question, can someone please delete the article? Clarification: When I said I'd add sources, I did (see addition of the section Services). It would have helped if I'd have gotten feedback that said the sources needed "significant coverage." But I got no feedback. When I said I'd add additional details relevant to the discussion and upload in the next few hours, I did. Again, I got no feedback/response. Thanks again. And especially for checking all of the sources and giving helpful and appropriate feedback. I really appreciate that generous effort. Enjoy the day.MaeInJune (talk) 17:01, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

I suggest just letting the deletion discussion run its course, MaeInJune, as it looks like it will result in deletion at present. By the way, Robert McClenon and Maproom won't have been notified of your mentions in that comment, as you didn't include them in the edit that you signed. See Misplaced Pages:Notifications#Triggering events for an explanation. Cordless Larry (talk) 20:25, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Are there still issues with these sites?

Michael Graversen and Dreaming of Denmark KlausJensen (talk) 19:53, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse, KlausJensen. I will comment on Dreaming of Denmark. This article has lots of non-neutral language. We do not describe films as "award winning" in the lead, since most notable films win at least a few awards. That's promotionalism. Consider also this sentence:
"The film provides brutally honest depictions of the transience, isolation and frightening uncertainty he faces."
Which reliable source calls the film "brutally honest" and mentions all that other stuff? You cannot include such evaluative language in a Misplaced Pages article unless it is attributed to the opinion of a professional film critic, and properly referenced . Please remove all such unreferenced evaluative or promotional language from both articles. Cullen Let's discuss it 07:09, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply Cullen. I will change the language to make it more neutral. I just took the text from the official film page of The Danish Film Institute. They are a respeced government institution in Denmark. KlausJensen (talk) 14:33, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
To expand a little further, KlausJensen, language such as Cullen mentions would be acceptable if it was explicitly quoted and attributed in the article - provided the source was both reliable and independent. I've no doubt the Danish Film Institute site is reliable; but the description of the film is uncredited, and it seems likely to me that it derives from the film's producers (perhaps by a press release). Evaluative language about a subject needs to be cited to a reliable source independent of the subject. --ColinFine (talk) 17:59, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi again Cullen328 Now I have tried to make it better in Dreaming of Denmark - are there still issues you think? KlausJensen (talk) 15:01, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

Updating company name

Hi! A couple of days ago I started my internship at Vekoma Rides, one of the largest rollercoaster manufacturers in the world. During research I found that the wrong name is b eing used in Misplaced Pages. So I made an account but I can't seem to change the company title. Before 2001, the company name was Vekoma. After their overtake by Huisman, they continued under the name Vekoma Rides Manufacturing (or short Vekoma Rides), but since Vekoma (without addition) refers to the company before 2001, it's inaccurate.

Can some tell me if its possible to change this, and if so, how?

Thanks in advance!

Valceryn (talk) 11:43, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello @Valceryn:This guideline will assist you to move a page to your desired name.
Hi Valceryn. You are not yet autoconfirmed, an edit threshold requiring accounts to be more than four days old and have made more than ten edits in order to take certain actions, including moving a page. Please also be aware of the article titling policy and especially its subsection regarding common names and its sub-subsection at WP:NAMECHANGES. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:55, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
Your own website switches between "Vekoma", "Vekoma Rides" and "Vekoma Rides Manufacturing", e.g. on About Vekoma. Vekoma Rides Manufacturing has redirected to Vekoma since 2015 and I have just created the same redirect at Vekoma Rides. The article mentions the full official name in the opening sentence. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:09, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Thank you guys for your information and help! @ PrimeHunter, they indeed use different names. I went by the legal department of the company to inform about it. Conclusion was that it is not (legally) wrong to use Vekoma, but it's not its official name anymore since 2001, so it is advised to note the entire name every time only Vekoma is used in an article etc. At the Dutch Chamber of Commerce another Vekoma (transportation company) is registered as Vekoma (without anything). Our company is officially only mentioned as Vekoma Rides. However, I hear multiple employees answering phones with just Vekoma.. I think its also because the company size, worldwide familiarity, and habit to say Vekoma.

Anyways, thanks again for your help! Also in general, you are doing the world a great favor! :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Valceryn (talkcontribs) 14:41, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, Valceryn. While the legal name, and changes to it, should certainly be mentioned in the article (provided reliable published sources can be found for them - which is likely, because for this purpose the company's own website or publications would be acceptable), the primary name of the Misplaced Pages article should be the name used in the majority of the reliable sources which establish the company's notability. The company's legal department has no authority over what those sources, and hence Misplaced Pages, call the company. --ColinFine (talk) 17:43, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

I've lost some pages added to my book

Hello, I'm new on WikiPedia and I don't know the way to share my problem.

I'm only collecting pages into a book to have joint the information I need. I started this action two days ago; and yesterday when I finished and saved my work the book has 72 pages and 7 chapters.

Today I've connected again to WikiPedia and I've found only 32 pages without any chapter.

Could you help me or tell me where to go to find help. Thank you very much.

Sincerelly yours,

Henry

Lhsebas (talk) 10:58, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse. There is no sign of any such problem with the book, so you may need to purge your cache, or (if needed) shutdown your browser and restart it. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:03, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your fast answer.

I've clean my browser cache, cookies and everything, I've change my browser; but the result is the same: only 32 pages.

When you tell me that there is no problem with my book, can you see 72 pages?

Thank you again, Henry

Lhsebas (talk) 13:32, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

@Lhsebas: I see 9 chapters (including an empty at the end) and 72 pages in your saved book User:Lhsebas/Books/Stellar Evolution. When I click the "Book Creator" link at "Edit this book" on that page I still see all the chapters and pages. Is it possible you are working on a new unsaved book in your browser? It's possible to save many different books and work on either one of them or an unsaved book at a time. Unsaved books may vanish between browser sessions but sometimes they last. Others cannot see an unsaved book if you have one. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:48, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
Perhaps you are looking at a different book? Are you looking at User:Lhsebas/Books/Stars Evolution instead of User:Lhsebas/Books/Stellar Evolution? --David Biddulph (talk) 14:01, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
I overlooked that. It has 32 pages and no chapters so that must be it. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:14, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
Upsss... Thank you very much.

I don't know where to hide my head. What a shame!!!

I wouldn't know I had started two different books. What a rookie ;o)

Thank you.

One question please:

When I log in to Misplaced Pages, I don't know how to find my book. Is there an easy link to access them?

Thank you, Henry

Lhsebas (talk) 21:05, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

@Lhsebas: One way is to click "Contributions" at the top right of any page, and then "Subpages" at the bottom. If some of your most recent edits are to the books then they already show on "Contributions". PrimeHunter (talk) 21:15, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

All in order. Now I can access easily to my books.

Thank you very much.

How do I write a biography?

I don't seem to be able to alter anything on the 'biography template' — Preceding unsigned comment added by FRAS (talkcontribs) 20:57, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello FRAS and welcome to the Teahouse.
Whoa, there, you may be getting ahead of yourself. Most Teahouse hosts will recommend that you spend some time on Misplaced Pages getting to know the ropes before attempting the rather daunting task of writing a whole new article. In most cases, you can't just start an article in the main part of Misplaced Pages – it will likely be deleted because it is unfinished when you start it. It looks like this may have happened to you already.
There are two pages that we generally recommend for people getting started: WP:Your first article and Help:referencing for beginners. If you master the material in there, you'll be on your way. The Teahouse is here if you need help.  —jmcgnh 05:11, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Reference doubts.

I'm looking to make a wiki page about a popular commentary YouTuber. Do YouTube videos count as possible references if they're well documented. Also will the YouTubers website(about me section) act as a source of suitable references. This individual is very popular, however I'm finding it tough to get well documented references. Last thing I want is to spend a lot of time on this article and then get vandal warnings. Any advice is appreciated. Arkhaminsanity (talk) 18:14, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello Arkhaminsanity and welcome to the Teahouse.
Unfortunately, a person's statements about themselves (such as YouTube videos and their website) cannot be used to establish notability, which is the very first requirement when adding an article to Misplaced Pages. Adding inadequately sourced material, at least the first few times, is not going to get you labeled as a vandal, but the edits will most likely be quickly reverted and a page that you create with inadequate supporting evidence will most likely be speedily deleted. Be sure to read the guidance at WP:Your first article so you can become a valued contributing editor. jmcgnh 21:38, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
@Arkhaminsanity: I typoed the {{u}} template in the above. Pinging again. jmcgnh 21:43, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Draft article

How much time does it take to examine the draft article prepared by me ??? !helper Sawongam (talk) 10:18, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Most drafts are reviewed within 4 weeks of being submitted for review. Please don't submit any draft for review (or try to create any more articles directly) until you have read and understood the advice at WP:Your first article and the other links which were given to you on your user talk page. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:00, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for your advice user:David Biddulph Can I ask for the cause ??? Why not to create a draft ??? And is there any ID ban or any restriction if the article is not accepted or deleted by wikipedia ??? !Helper — Preceding unsigned comment added by SawOnGam (talkcontribs) 12:24, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

The cause, SawOnGam is that if you create a draft about a subject that is not notable, then it will not be accepted as an article whatever you do to it, and you will have wasted your time. If you submit it for review, you will be wasting the reviewer's time as well. If you create a draft about a subject that is notable, but you are unfamiliar with Misplaced Pages's policies, guidelines, and manual of style, it is likely that you will have to redo your work, wasting your time. If you discover the problems only by sending it for review, you will in a sense have wasted the reviewer's time as well. (Not completely, as that is what the reviewing task is; but if you had understood the policies in the first place, the job would probably have been quicker and easier for the reviewer). --ColinFine (talk) 19:21, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

ColinFine How can I delete that draft then ?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SawOnGam (talkcontribs) 08:42, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

For a page to which you have been the only significant contributor, you can request speedy deletion by adding {{Db-author}} to the top of the page. And please remember, when posting to a talk page or other discussion page such as here, to add a signature to the end of your message. --David Biddulph (talk) 09:13, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
