Randy Shannon is the current defensive coordinator for the Miami Hurricanes college football team at the University of Miami.
Bio
Randy Shannon is widely considered one of the top defensive coordinators in college football. Year in, year out, his defenses are among the finest in college football. Shannon was the recipient of the Frank Boyles Award in 2001 (given annually to the best assistant coach in college football) for his work with Miami's record-setting defense that year.
Shannon's defenses are marked by aggressive, turnover-producing play, and are extremely difficult for opposing teams to pass against. In his five seasons as Miami's defensive coordinator, his defenses have led the nation in pass defense three times ('02, '03, '05), pass efficiency defense three times ('01, '03, '05), and scoring defense once ('01).
Shannon's defenses at Miami have ranked as follows in total defense nationally:
- 2001 - 6th
- 2002 - 7th
- 2003 - 2nd
- 2004 - 28th
- 2005 - 4th
Prior to being named Miami's defensive coordinator in 2001, Shannon worked as linebackers coach for the NFL's Miami Dolphins in 2000 and as a defensive assistant in 1998 and 1999.
Shannon played linebacker for the Hurricanes in the mid 1980s, and was a member of their 1987 national championship squad. He played professional football with the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL, becoming the first rookie to start at outside linebacker for the franchise since 1963.
Shannon is often rumored to be in the running for various NCAA and NFL head coaching positions.
