Randy Heit is the creator of the very popular Doom modification called ZDoom. Aside from ZDoom, Heit has created other works from the Amiga Animation titled "Jungle Man" to an interactive computer game called "Charles and Vincent" which unfortunately was never finished.
He once had a birthday cake that was shaped like a computer. It was his love of computers that led him to ask his parents to buy one. Originally disappointed that it wasn't an Apple IIe like he had in grade school, he soon fell in love with the Commodore 64 that they brought home with them. He soon became a master of BASIC programming and went on to publish and improve upon games that were published in Compute! Gazette. One remarkable example of his programming prowess was his improvements upon the classic game Rebels and Lords. Adding improved graphics and increased gameplay options, Randy soon found himself out-programming even his grade school principal Dr. John Andrus. Dr. Andrus soon allowed Randy to take home one of the school's Apple IIgs computers over the summer where Randy developed a new operating system called RanDOS, which infortunately was soon overshadowed by the quickly developing Windows.
The early nineties saw the fall of the Commodore empire, brought about by IBM and its inferior graphics. Randy still held strong to his Commodore roots by being a firm supporter of the Amiga, even its short lived CD32 gaming system. However, the advent of the internet and the complete and utter destruction of Commodore/Amiga, led to Randy's conversion (albeit grudging) to the industry standard Windows operating system. It was using a Windows computer that Randy received his Computer Science degree in 2000 from Iowa State University. With this degree and the knowledge he developed while in college, Randy quickly began outperforming even the best computer programmers of his time. Spurning all offers from computer game developers, Randy felt that his heart was best served towards his fellow gaming community and desired to program on his own. Using the source code from the original Doom game by ID software, Randy developed the all-time best-selling free game ever, zDoom, which to this day is a work in progress.
