Hari Prasad,

Could you please become an Admininstrator for the Sanskrit Misplaced Pages also? Thanks,

S.

  • hmm... thanks for wanting me to become a moderator on sa. I don't think I'm gonna apply for it as yannf is doing a very good job as admin there and also don't think there's a need for one more sysop. Moreover, I have kannada wikipedia to look upon, and might not get time to concentrate on sa. later, maybe. --Hpnadig 15:24, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

No problems :-)

You may want to see my User page as since you have choosen the Misplaced Pages and button combo logo, I've updated new logos and more. squash 01:19, Sep 25, 2004 (UTC)

Please go ahead and use the image for the Kannada Misplaced Pages. Thanks for letting me know in advance as well. On a side note, could you please give me the URL for the article so that I could take a look at it? Thanks. AreJay 03:42, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Kuvempu ?

If Kuvempu is his pen name, is "Kuppalli venkatappa puttappa" his personal name? The reason that I'm asking is that I'm trying to add some non-western pen names to the pen name article, and have been following "What links here" from that article. Your User name was on the talk:Kuvempu page. ] 08:28, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)

replied to gk on his user page --Hpnadig 16:58, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I hope that you don't mind that I fixed a few small typos on your main User page. ] 09:56, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Another question: If you know anything about Kannada poetry, could you look at my question at Talk:Kannada poetry? ] 15:27, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I've discovered a nice way to do spell-check Misplaced Pages articles. I am using the Firefox browser (which I recommend highly), and recently installed the SpellBound extension. When you are editing an article, all you have to do is right click, and then choose "Check Spelling", and it works very much like any regular wordprocessor spell-checker.
ah, ok. I too use firefox, but didn't know about this plugin. My browser is already filled with so many plugins. ;)
Sorry, but I'm not on irc.
One question on Kannada poetry: Is it common for the poets to use pen names, or was Kuvempu unusual? One of the reasons that I am asking is that I am trying to include more non-Western information in some of the articles that I've edited, such as the pen name article. Also, can you point me to any English translations of vachanas that are online? ] 18:35, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)
yes, it is common. I don't know in what context you're asking this, but there are a lot of kannada poets who use pennames. for example, BiEmSHri, ambikaatanayadatta, shrInivaasa, mankutimma, sarvagna are all different popular pennames of the popular Kannada poets/writers.
If you look at what I've done with the pen name article, you will get an idea of what I am trying to do. Besides the examples of British, French, and American pen names that the article started with, I've added Japanese, Korean, Iranian, Chinese, Russian, and Bulgarian pen names. Since I hate "bare" lists without any annotations, I also added some notes for each of the entries on the list. I will add Kuvempu to the list, and if any of the other poets you mentioned have Misplaced Pages articles, I would like to add them as well. Also, if pen names are quite common for Kannada poets (or authors), I would like to add a section explaining that (see Pen name#Urdu Poetry and Pen name#Japan for examples). ] 08:02, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I searched around a bit for english versions of vachanas, but found none yet. Here's an article that has a near to the meaning translations of few vachanas. Hope this helps --Hpnadig 22:26, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Here's an other one. --Hpnadig 22:27, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)
At least for the examples that you pointed me to, I would be more likely to classify them as something like a poetic aphorism, rather than being haiku-like. ] 08:02, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)
well, we can talk about it if you can come over to irc sometime. I might be able to show you more examples, say some haiku-like work and more. Its really very vast part of Kannada saahithya, and there's a lot more you need to know there ;) I was heading towards writing articles on that, but forthcoming exams have slowed down my pace :) --Hpnadig 13:09, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Sanskrit text

Hi Hpnadig, I have removed the (alleged) Sanskrit text added by you in the article Vande Mataram. I am sure your additions were well intentioned but the text you added rendered as a bunch of strange characters. If I did something wrong I am sure you will correct it. --Ankur 23:00, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

What do you call a 'UFO' in kannada?

Just got curious. Is there already a word in use? or may be 'a parichita haaruva vasthu!'

or 'vimaana'? :)

he he, maybe. read 'karvalo' by KP, there are such science fiction words used there. --Hpnadig 05:05, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Help with a Wiki Project

Dear Hariprasad:

I have a project that I have been nursing for a while - related to Indians and their contributions to Science. Professionally I am a physicist in the US. Since I would like to involve someone from Bangalore I am venturing to leave this message. If you would liek to hear more or if you have friends who are Wiki experienced and would like to get in touch with me, please do so at bss2d@virginia.edu. I just got back from Bangalore last week and wish I had seen your page before that!

With Best Regards,

Bellave Shivaram bss2d@virginia.edu

Category:Dams of India

I removed it because Dams of India is a non existent category. Feel free to add it back if you can find enough entries in Misplaced Pages to justify the category. If there are, then make Dams of India a subcategory of Dams... Sortior 15:23, Dec 22, 2004 (UTC)

Veer Zaara

Writing "reportedly a success" and adding a link to the report shouldn't be a POV. I would be happy if fellow editors are more cautious while changing the original write-up --Hpnadig 09:26, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Sorry I didn't understand the context. Also didn't understand your second line relating to original write-up. Jay 10:07, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Summaries on Bollywood movie list

Hi Hpnadig,

I noticed that you greatly expanded a few of the summaries on the Bollywood movie list.

Some of the summaries used to be longer, and I edited them way down. My feeling is that making the list very very LONG is not reader-friendly. If you can't scan the whole list in 15 minutes or so, it's not useful. The list is primarily for Westerners who are just discovering Bollywood and want to explore; they may read the article, print the list, and go out to the nearest Indian grocery/spice/video store to find something that looks interesting. Of course, each movie should have its own page too, so that readers can explore further.

I just got back from a Linux conference and I'm dead tired, so this is NOT the right moment to be hacking away at your work. Besides, I'd rather talk it over with you before I do anything drastic.

If any movies deserve amplication, it's not the recent ones, like Veer-Zaara, but older, classic ones like Guide. The material you added there was useful.

The list is also far from being complete. It's OK on recent stuff and gets spottier the further you go back. I think it needs more of the Amitabh "angry young man" movies for one thing, but not being an Amitabh fan myself, I'm weak on these. If you want to work on the list, help would be much appreciated. Kannada & Interwiki

If you look, you'll see that I've simply moved the Interwiki box to the "External links" section, which is the location it belongs to according to Interwiki's Talk page --Circeus 01:17, Jan 23, 2005 (UTC)

I've attached a reply to this on your talk page. Plz read it. --H P Nadig 01:22, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I've spent 2 hours putting/moving interwiki templates. The template was proposed for deletion because it was considered inappropriate at the top of pages (among things). There was no reason whatsoever to have both a See also link when the Interwiki box was fairly prominent in the lower parts of the page. If you consider that location for the template inappropriate (after considering the question, i came to conclude it was), you should idscuss it over at its talk page. --Circeus 01:50, Jan 23, 2005 (UTC)
Oh my. Most evidently I very badly worded my previous comment. The template was proposed for deletion and kept with a complete reformatting and the decision (I believe) not to put it at the top of pages anymore, than the discussion related to it was archived on it's talk page.
I kept it at the top only of page that were substubs or didn't have an actual "External links" section. I took the liberty of moving your comment at the talk page in a more appropriate position and deleting the inappropriate parts. Really sorry for any inconvenients. --Circeus 03:14, Jan 23, 2005 (UTC)

Namaskara

I don't live in Mysore right now, but will be back soon. Yes, I have been wanting to contribute to the Kannada wikipedia, but problems with fonts (on my machine) and the many spelling mistakes I used to make (last I wrote kannada was years ago) are keeping me away.

hi HP, i saw your message on my talk page. I had written some articles such as Saradadevi, ramakrishna mission etc. in kannada. But i found it difficult to write articls as i have windows2000 on my system. The kannada unicode is not supported here and the letters appear distinct. Even then i did some modifications. That apart pls accept my sincere congratulations; you are doing really great work. I want to bring to your notice Banglapedia and for some articles such as Tagore's songs. How i wish if we also had such a site on kannada/karnataka !! wishing you all the best Ramashray 07:26, 12 May 2005 (UTC)

Oops

Though I live in Bangalore, I cannot read or write Kannada but can speak a scary version on the language(working on it). Thanks for the invite.Wishes. Calvinkrishy 15:42, May 27, 2005 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Kuvempu.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Kuvempu.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Misplaced Pages because of copyright law (see Misplaced Pages's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Misplaced Pages are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Misplaced Pages:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Shyam 22:57, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Hey, there. I guess the photo was taken by K P Purnachandra Tejasvi (Google his name to know about him). If needed, we can take permission from him. But the site owner of the site where it was published (and has been there for many years now) has given the permission to use it. Please do the needful and add the relevant tag. I haven't been following the policy changes on en wiki w.r.t. the images recently... so go ahead with what fits in. Cheers, --H P Nadig * 12:03, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
HPN, you have tagged a wrong template to the image as you uploaded the image after 19 May, 2005. Please add an appropriate tag else i am afraid that it will be deleted without further warning. Please add which kind of permission you have got from the author/site owner, means, means under which license, like GFDL, PD, CC and fair use, image should be considered so that an appropriate tag can be added. Thank you, Shyam 12:51, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
