Revision as of 02:40, 2 October 2006
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bar is an ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Montenegro. It is centred in the city of Bar. It was erected as a diocese in the 9th century and elevated to an archdiocese in 1034.
The archdiocese's cathedral is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Bar. Zef Gashi currently serves as Archbishop in the archdiocese. Since the death of Bishop Marko Sopi of Kosovo's Prizren Diocese, Gashi has also served as its administrator.
The archdiocese has seen a steady decline in its Catholic population as many of the church's declared Croats and Albanians have emigrated from the region. However, it should be noted that the church also has members among declared Montenegrins.
