Nélson Cabral Semedo (born 16 November 1993) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a right back for FC Barcelona and the Portugal national team.

Semedo began his career at Sintrense before joining Benfica in 2012. After spending a season on loan at Fátima, he initially appeared for Benfica B, before making his first team debut in August 2015. He made his senior international debut in October 2015.

Club career

Born in Lisbon, Semedo came through the youth system at Sintrense; debuting in the first-team at age 17. On 12 January 2012, he and Manuel Liz signed a five-year deal with Benfica, set to begin the ensuing season. His first season was spent on loan to third tier side Fátima.

He returned to Benfica in the following season, being placed on the reserve side, and having his professional debut on 10 August 2013, in a 2013–14 Segunda Liga game against Trofense. After nearly 60 appearances for the B-team, he was touted as a future replacement for Maxi Pereira.

With Maxi Pereira's departure, Semedo extended his contract with Benfica until 2021 and joined the first-team on their pre-season tour in North America in July 2015. On 9 August 2015, he made his debut for Benfica's main squad in the domestic Super Cup loss against Sporting CP. A week later, Semedo scored his first goal for them, against Estoril in the Primeira Liga. After establishing himself in the starting eleven, Semedo suffered a setback in October 2015, when he sustained an injury while with the national team. The injury to his right knee required surgery, with Semedo expected to miss two months. He returned from injury in early January, but could never perform as he had done in the opening months, losing his place in the starting eleven to André Almeida. He finished the campaign in the reserve team.

In 2016–17, Semedo regain his place on the first team and went on to be the third most used player in the historic fourth league title in a row. He scored once in the league in a 2–1 win on the road against Arouca, and once in the Champions League in a 3–3 draw with Beşiktaş. In the Taça de Portugal Final, he assisted Eduardo Salvio for the second goal, with Benfica lifting the trophy after beating Vitória de Guimarães by 2–1. For his performances throughout the season, he won the Breakthrough Player of the Year award from the Portuguese League for Professional Football. On 13 July 2017, Barcelona announced an agreement with Benfica for his transfer, pending medical tests.

Barcelona

On 12 July 2017, Semedo signed for Spanish La Liga side FC Barcelona B for a fee of €35 million plus add-ons.

International career

Semedo was born in Portugal to parents of Cape Verdean descent. On 2 October 2015, Semedo was called up to play for the Portugal national team, in UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying matches against Denmark and Serbia. He debuted in the latter game on the 11th, playing the entirety of a 2–1 win at the Partizan Stadium in Belgrade. He was called-up for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, and played the last match of the group stage, a 4–0 win against New Zealand. He also appeared in the third-place playoff against Mexico, being sent-off in the 106th minute as Portugal won the bronze medal.
