You don't happen to live near a city with a fireboat we don't have pictures of, do you?

Factual error in Marianne Ihlen

Please never introduce incorrect information into articles, as you did to Marianne Ihlen in this edit with the addition "She bore three daughters during her second marraige." The source does not support what you added and for good reason: Ihlen gave birth to Axel Joachim Jensen in Oslo on 21 January 1960, but her second marriage to Jan Kielland Stang, who has three daughters from his first marriage, produced no children. Please be more careful. Sam Sailor 04:16, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

  • Hmmm. What is this contributor's point? Of course no policy compliant good faith contributor introduces information they know to be incorrect, on purpose. This comment could be interpreted as an accusation I had a secret agenda to trick our readers into thinking Ihlen had a son and three biological daughters, when she had born a son, but the daughters were her step-daughters.
  • But, of course, an accusation like that would be truly ridiculous. It is probably best, most compliant with AGF to simply live in mystery and not speculate at the motives behind this other party's comment. Geo Swan (talk) 11:37, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
  • That's odd. Google translate's translation of the quote in the {{cite}} provided says nothing about who the daughter's biological mother is. Geo Swan (talk) 11:43, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
It's worse: the source does not mention the daughters at all. But I apologies for my clumsy wording; let me rephrase: please read the sources more carefully to avoid introduction of incorrect information into articles.
And there are more: in this diff you added "Kari Hesthamar, an award-winning Norwegian journalist, won one of her awards for her 2006 documentary on Ihlen. Ihlen's own memoir used Hesthamar's research. In 2012 Hesthamar wrote her own biography of Ihlen, "So Long, Marianne: A Love Story", which was translated into English in 2014.
  1. Kari Hesthamar's radio documentary "So long, Marianne. Ein radiodokumentar om og med Leonard Cohens norske muse" was first broadcast in September 2005, not in 2006.
  2. Ihlen never wrote her memoir.
  3. Hesthamar's biography about Ihlen, So Long, Marianne. Ei Kjærleikshistorie was first published in 2008, not in 2012.
I'm particularly nonplused by "Ihlen's own memoir used Hesthamar's research." As a matter of less concern is that works of literature are not enclosed in double quotations marks, cf. MOS:ITAL, neither are music albums; it is So Long, Marianne: A Love Story, not "So Long, Marianne: A Love Story", and it's Ultraviolence, not "Ultraviolence". Sam Sailor 02:08, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

  • Sam, we are all volunteers here. If you think I made a mistake, or I think you made a mistake neither of us should be unpleasant about it.
  • You think I should be more careful -- and I think you should be more careful. Sorry, I also think you show signs of not being open to considering the possibility that someone you disagree with may still have valid points, worth considering. On your talk page I acknowledged some points you made I agreed with. I think I made some valid points -- that you ignored.
  • I own up to making a mistake, at least most of the time. I do my best to do so, even when the other party has been unpleasant. But it is a lot easier when the other party isn't being unpleasant.
  • I am sorry to be the one to tell you, if you aren't aware, that you are capable of great unpleasantness. Your last comment on your talk page? I think you showed an unwillingness to consider other points of view, an unwillingness that is a problem on a project like this.
  • You suggested I should tune my experience here by installing special scripts. I used to work with computers, decades ago. But I think it is best to have the wikipedia remain useful and useable by contributors who aren't experts at installing scripts, even if that frustrates those who want to ride technology's cutting edge.
  • You know what Adam Osborne said about those who ride technology's cutting edge? "Those who ride technology's cutting edge are frequently sacrificed upon its blade." He said that before he developed the leading edge Osborne portable computer.
  • The wikipedia is not the only wiki I contribute to. So, it is not in my interests to get used to advanced features that won't be present elsewhere. Geo Swan (talk) 04:37, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

Italics

Information icon Hello. I just wanted to let you know that when you add the title of a book, film, album, magazine, or TV series to an article, as you did to Suzanne Elrod, it should be italicized by adding two single apostrophes on either side ('' ''). Titles of television episodes, short stories and songs should be placed within quotation marks. More detail can be found in the Misplaced Pages Manual of Style. Thank you. Jennifer Blumin

Hi Geo Swan, I think the reason I nominated it because it was a terrible article, badly written, and it needed to go. When I initially reviewed it, half the references were blogs, some of the others were 404's, and it read like an advertising skit. I put a copyedit and cleanup tag on I think, then left it for a month, and put it into the WP:AFD afterwards. Misplaced Pages Terms of Use have now changed relating to WP:BLP. BLP articles must now have ironclad verifiability in terms of sources, and the article didn't have it, and the fact it was written more about the ladies companies, rather than her, meant it had to go. It is worth mentioning, that WP Terms of Use no longer accept blatant advertising as it did in the past. That was the reason it was deleted. scope_creep (talk) 16:51, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

Why the big table in my talk page, and why the interest on this particular article, considering it was such a badly written article? I also think it is particularly crass to leave a comment on my talk page regarding my spelling, particularly after a days editing WP scope_creep (talk) 19:03, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
Hi Geo Swan, I never realised that I nominated it for deletion in 2013. When I originally posted it for deleted, I checked the previous Afd and noticed that the previous two keeps were from SPA accounts. scope_creep (talk) 19:12, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
Hi Geo Swan. That clearly explains why you suddenly decided at 16.23 to start looking for the article. As regards your point about the time that take to create an article, the time was spent promoting her companies mostly (>80%), not the lady. It was a clear violation of WP:NOT. If you examine the version history, which I did, you can see that four or five of the editors, are WP:SPA accounts. They are paid shills. The article was created by an advertising or PR/branding company who had a content plan, looking to promote her companies, plain and simple. Certainly there was a bunch of excellent editors who undertook copyedit, category addition, etc. That time is now wasted, not because of the work they undertook, but the nature of the article itself, which was there to promote her companies. Obviously you are going to recreate or bring back the article and that is your right. But if it ends up as an advertising article as before, then I will probably end up putting it into WP:AFD. scope_creep (talk) 20:39, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
I want to add that during the first Afd, the two editors that voted keep were also SPA editors. scope_creep (talk) 20:44, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
Hi Geo Swan. It is may be the case that the lady is notable, but as I've pointed out before, the article as it was written was about her company, not her. I understand your comments about shills. It is probably quite easy to identify a shill or a paid editor, via their behaviour. Software can be used to easily identify them, it is difficult but not impossible. I think software of that general type is well advanced, in development. I don't know if User:Tammytoons is a SPA account, I don't know, but I don't think so.. Regarding the WP:BIAS reference, regarding the male bias; yip it worries me immensely I have been looking at the Women in Red portal, and the previous WP:BIAS gender gap effort and how it failed. I'll tell you the reason why I don't like advertising in WP, apart from the fact it is not allowed. It simply serves no purpose, except to drive the virtuous circle. It has no public good. It not like the NHS, or the police, or weights and measures crowd, or consumer rights folk, or the trading standards. All it does is subvert both the Letter and the Spirit of Misplaced Pages. It is a kind of bluntness, a lack of soul which drives people to spread muck on WP, without concern for anybody reading wikipedia, or Wikipeda itself. scope_creep (talk) 23:22, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Tariq Azizuddin while a captive of the TTP.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Tariq Azizuddin while a captive of the TTP.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Misplaced Pages. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:59, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

  • I have no notes supplementing the fair use rationale I used in 2011, which I agree, given my experience as of 2017, I agree falls short. I placed a {{g7}}. Geo Swan (talk) 10:44, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

Samantha Sepulveda

The two westernmost of Long Island's four counties are part of NYC

Sorry, I didn't read the talk page, and didn't know that L.I. police were not part of the NYPD.

As for whether the article should omit the city in which she serves when it is supported by a cited source, I think we need to bring in others into that discussion for a consensus. Nightscream (talk) 03:13, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

  • @Nightscream: NYC has five boroughs. Staten Island is west of, Manhattan Island. The Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens are east of Manhattan. The Bronx is on the mainland, between the Hudson River, Connecticut, and Long Island Sound. Brooklyn and Queens are on Long Island, but take up only the western 20 percent or so. Ever hear of "The Hamptons"? It is an area where rich people have luxurious seafront estates? It too is on Long Island.

Vandalism at Ola Al-Fares

What exactly are you trying to do by fabricating a story on a biography? Did you think it would go unnoticed? Makeandtoss (talk) 13:20, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

  • Makeandtoss, Ms Al Fares is a public figure. Protections in WP:BLP that would protect her from embarrassment, if she was a non-notable nobody don't apply to her.
In answer to your question, no, I did not expect the passage I added to go unnoticed, either by our readers, or those wikipedia contributors interested in working on this article. I anticipated readers would find it added to their understanding of Ms Al-Fares. I expected any contributors interested in working on the article would actually look at the references I cited, rather than go off half-cocked, and accuse me of fabrication. Geo Swan (talk) 13:46, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
I did take a look at the references, none of which mentioned Ola. Do you think people are stupid? Makeandtoss (talk) 14:17, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
  • Are people stupid? All people are stupid, some of the time, a small number of people are stupid, all of the time. Personally, I try to stay in the first group.

Please remember that compliance with AGF requires us to do our best to assume fellow wikipedia contributors we disagree with, are in that first group. Geo Swan (talk) 21:44, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Sorry to be blunt. But its extremely difficult to assume you're in the first group when you literally twisted a source and fabricated a story out of your imagination, for god knows what intentions. Makeandtoss (talk) 21:59, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
  • I don't believe you are sorry. And I don't believe you have any possible justification for your hostile attitude.
I encourage you to consider the possibility that you may be temperamentally unsuited to working on a project where you should be trying to work cooperatively with other contributors. Geo Swan (talk) 22:28, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Danish Ahmad

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Danish Ahmad requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Edwardx (talk) 23:55, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

  • I didn't start an article. I created a redirect. Someone else started an article on a nn person. Deletion was not appropriate. Restoring the redirection was appropriate... Geo Swan (talk) 01:39, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
