Endowment

Just curious. Can anybody verify the endowment listed on this site? I just checked the President's state of the University page on the Hofstra web site and (according to that site, as of 2007) Total endowment investments have grown to $228 million, net of trusts and annuities. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.189.35.249 (talk) 20:05, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Nonsense Humour Magazine

This section should be updated, as it hasn't come out six times a year for the past 2 years. Future Endeavors

I decided to add this section as Hofstra seeks to potentially open a medical school (they are currently 'exploring it") and host a presidential debate. These are two important (potentially landmark) decision the school is taking (which will costs millions of dollars) and I feel a section informing people of these undertakings is needed.--24.189.35.249 14:16, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

The Medical School portion of this Misplaced Pages article is premature. The details contained in the article lack any sort of citation and at this point would be considered speculation, bordering slanderous to suggest that the medical school is already in the process of accrediation. This is nonsense. In addition, there have been no talks whether the school will be granting an MD degree or a DO degree. Hi, no, you're mistaken. Not only have there been "talks whether the school will be granting an MD degree or a DO degree," but also this is firmly established. The others have been announced (though I wasn't the one who added them to the article). Not sure about accreditation; I'll check. For the others, I'll add a citation. Also, um, slander? Hofstra introduced the Lions in 1987, but they weren't made official until July 1, 2005. How should that be listed? MBisanz

Notable alumni

The alumni section has had a run of false or gratuitous entries. It may still need pruning. Please ensure accuracy. And not everyone is famous. Unless someone is obviously famous, it would help to provide some documentation. (The director of marketing for The Sandwich Factory, for example, if he even exists, does not appear on google, and warranted deletion.) If you have serious contributions, it would help to back them up or they will disappear. CHE 15:22, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Official Source for Notable Alumni

Hofstra's own "Alumni of Distinction" page

In addition, Hofstra also divides their notable alumni according to the college they graduated from. I.E.- If you want to see "drama" or "communications" alumni of distinction, then you have to goto the college of drama site (http://www.hofstra.edu/Academics/HCLAS/DD/DD_alumni.cfm) or college of communications site, etc. I don't know why the school does this, but they do.

As far as the other alumni, they can all be verified by doing a simple web search.

Nonsense! If he invented it, it would be called the "Deutsch Synthesizer"

It is absolutely true! Goto his web page at Hofstra.edu and read his official bio. http://www.hofstra.edu/academics/hclas/music/music_deutsch.cfm Scroll down to the bottom of his official bio and "actually" take the time and read!!!! He "collaborated" in the development of the Moog synthesizer with Robert A. Moog.

No it is true, I had a class with him and he was only the co-creator. It pretty much came down to the fact of bad business ethics. He also showed us a segment of a program that was on A&E I think that also said he was one of the co-creators. Why would he lie about it anyways?

Phi Alpha Gimel

Greek life section

There's something there now, but it sounds like the mission statement of the Greek life office and isn't really neutral; it makes claims that Greek life enhances overall quality of life. While that may be the stated goal of fraternities and sororities, to claim that it does so as a fact is problematic. I flagged it using the AD banner-thingie, though I don't know if that's the appropriate one to use in this situation. Also, is there a better way to indicate this problem when it exists for a specific section? Wantonlife (talk) 05:41, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Controversy?

The current phrasing: "Hofstra became the center of national controversy" means that it became the center of a national disagreement. Over what? Recent contributors (including those who deleted and restored the text) want to clarify what national disagreement was related to this episode? The facts seem well established. Also, this section seems out of place considering it's importance over the 75-year history of the University. It would make more sense to have a Controversy section, and post any controversial historical moments in there. HofstraUniversity (talk) 13:37, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

I'm afraid that I agree that the material seems out of place and not particularly notable in the history of the institution. Maybe it should be included as a one-liner and I'm not even convinced it deserves that much mention. --ElKevbo (talk) 04:02, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

I did some G-searching and reading, and I think that at least a sentence or two on the matter should be included in the article. The matter seems to have been covered so widely that it might need its own article, and then a sentence with a link would suffice, but until we can achieve consensus on that, I'd keep what we have. The worst outcome would be to create that article, merge this content, and then have that article deleted as a "one-time eventer" In any case, I think more opinions here are in order Vartanza (talk) 20:19, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Danmell Ndonye

• I cannot see the reason to remove Ndonye's name from the article, as it is a likely search term for those interested in the subject, and she is the perpetrator of the offense, not the victim, and the offense has been widely reported with her name in virtually every media outlet. This does not remotely violate WP:BLP. We do not remove the names of rapists or murderers from articles in the name of "taste." For now, I do not intend to restore the entire section at present, unless other editors continue to delete material, but I should point out that the last edits did not seem to mesh with plurality, ongoing consensus on the talk page and probably should have been discussed here first before being unilaterally enacted Vartanza (talk) 00:11, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Team Name Change

I deleted the "Upon discovering that name's relation with a former slave ship" qualifier about the Team's name because 1) I could find no reference to "The Flying Dutchman" as a slave ship and 2) That sentence was bad. Long Island’s First Private University?

The article states "Hofstra became Long Island’s first private university on March 1, 1963." This claim is also made on Hofstra's web site. How is this possible if Long Island University was chartered in 1926 and St. John's became a University in 1933? Even if one accepts the narrow definition of "Long Island" as meaning only Nassau and Suffolk counties, this ignores L.I.U.'s expansion to the C.W. Post campus in 1951. At best then, Hofstra can only claim to be the first private university entirely contained within the non-NYC section of Long Island. Add to that the fact that Adelphi attained university status the same year (I can't find an exact date) and this isn't much of a claim at all. Hofstra started off as simply an extension from New York University in 1935. And eventually "With the approval of the New York State Board of Regents, Hofstra became Long Island’s first private university in 1963". The other schools didn't have university status at the points in time, which is why they don't make that claim. AlaskanNativeRU (talk) 07:31, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

Greek life

The university has had a long history of Greek-Lettered organizations dating back to its founding. The local chapter that started Greek life on Hofstra's campus, Alpha Theta Beta (ΑΘΒ), is still active today. In the early 1990s, as Hofstra began to grow so did its social organizations. Many national chartered chapters were founded in 1989, including Delta Phi Epsilon. One of the local chapters, the Wreath and Foil sorority, founded in 1937, became Phi Sigma Sigma. One of the more notable changes in the 1990s was the removal of many local chapters and growth of nationally chartered fraternities, such as Zeta Beta Tau, Alpha Epsilon Pi, Kappa Sigma, and a business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi (1989). Tau Epsilon Phi and Tau Kappa Epsilon are the oldest fraternities on campus, both arriving in 1969. The Alpha Phi sorority is the oldest nationally recognized sorority on campus, founded in 1872.

Overall Greek-lettered organizations contribute to much of the philanthropy on campus, well as much of the school spirit. During events like Homecoming parades, students and alumni notice a majority of Greek-lettered floats. And the Sinterklaas celebration, a fifteen-year-old tradition of a holiday village built and constructed annually by members of the Greek lettered community for local children to play in and around during the December holiday season. One of its largest events, Greek Week held in the Spring semester, is a week long series of events of competition. Mainly sports, well as toga skits, banner competitions, a can castle, for local homeless shelters, and a relay race the community generates a lot of attention. The Greek-Lettered community is often noted for maintaining many traditions, and loyalty towards their alma mater. In addition, these organizations are noted for creating much of the social life on and off campus.

Since 2001, when the newest President of the University took office three additional social organizations have colonized and chartered chapters on campus: the Delta Chi fraternity, the Delta Gamma fraternity, and the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. The Phi Delta Theta fraternity applied successfully for colonization in the Spring 2010 semester. The Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity applied successfully for re-colonization in the Spring 2010 Semester. The Phi Kappa Theta fraternity applied successfully for colonization in the Spring 2015 semester. The Alpha Phi Omega fraternity applied successfully for colonization in the Spring 2016 semester. Three social organizations, the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, and the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity, remain inactive.
