The View is an American talk show that was conceived by Barbara Walters and Bill Geddie. It has aired on ABC as part of the network's daytime programming block since August 11, 1997. The show broadcasts live from the ABC Broadcast Center in New York City on weekdays at 11:00 am Eastern/10:00 am Central, and is tape-delayed for 10:00 am in the Mountain and Pacific time zones. It features a panel of women as co-hosts, who discuss the day's "Hot Topics" ranging from sociopolitical issues to pop culture, originally comprising Walters, moderator Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Debbie Matenopoulos, and Joy Behar. In addition to Behar, the current panel consists of moderator Whoopi Goldberg, Paula Faris, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, and Meghan McCain.

The show has received positive reviews from The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York Post, LA Daily News, Variety, Time, Entertainment Weekly, Vanity Fair, Los Angeles Times, and The New Yorker. In the span of twenty years, The View has won thirty Daytime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Talk Show and Outstanding Talk Show Host.

Format

The original opening credits for the show, featuring voice-over from Walters, explained the show's premise:

I've always wanted to do a show with women of different generations, backgrounds, and views: a working mother ; a professional in her 30s ; a young woman just starting out ; and then somebody who's done almost everything and will say almost anything . And in a perfect world, I'd get to join the group whenever I wanted...

The show is co-hosted by five women consisting of "different generations, different backgrounds, and different opinions." The panel discuss issues that pertain to politics, social issues, as well as pop culture headlines, commonly referred to as "Hot Topics." The discussions are often followed by an interview with a guest, often a celebrity promoting a project. Every show is ended by one of the co-hosts, primarily the moderator, saying, "Have a great day, everyone, and take a little time to enjoy the view."

The show periodically conducts audience giveaways. The twelfth season of The View heavily focused on the events related to the 2008 United States presidential election. Season 13 introduced the addition of occasional male guest contributors, the first season in the show's history to do so; among them were Bryant Gumbel, D. L. Hughley, and Joe Scarborough. Male personalities have since begun serving as guest panelists more frequently, specifically on Fridays. During season 18, the hosts started focusing more on politics once again, ahead of the upcoming 2016 United States presidential election.

Production

For seventeen years, the show filmed at 320 West 66th Street in ABC Television Studio 23 in New York City. The original set for the first four seasons was a leftover set from a cancelled soap opera The City. As a co-executive producer of the show, Walters has a role in the casting of the co-hosts. Longtime executive producer and co-creator Bill Geddie was the lone recurring male persona, sometimes shown as stepping out from behind the camera to interact with the hosts. The co-hosts wear IFB earpieces through which backstage producers communicate with them.

In August 2014, ABC announced that Geddie was departing the show and that he was being replaced by Bill Wolff, who had served as vice president of primetime programming and as executive producer of The Rachel Maddow Show at MSNBC. The View's eighteenth season brought significant on-air and behind-the-scenes changes in what was regarded as a “refresh” of the show. The show’s new production team also included Brian Balthazar as co-executive producer, Ashley S. Gorman as director, and Kathleen Rajsp as senior supervising producer. These changes also included a new home for The View, as the show relocated to the neighboring ABC Broadcast Center at 77 West 66th Street on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. During the season premiere on September 15, 2014, the show unveiled a new set design that featured a coffee table-style desk with low-arm chairs, large video wall, in-the-round audience seating, and an on-camera social media station. Tweaks in subsequent weeks included a glass desk and high stools at center stage, as well as color adjustments in backgrounds and graphics.

In August 2015, it was reported that former Late Show with David Letterman producer Brian Teta would be joining the show as co-executive producer. Later in the month, executive producer Bill Wolff was announced to be departing the show. In February 2016, along with the show's twentieth season renewal, Candi Carter was promoted to executive producer after serving as interim showrunner for season 19, becoming the show’s first African-American executive producer. During the twentieth-season premiere on September 6, 2016, the show debuted a new theme song written by Diane Warren and performed by Mary J. Blige, along with a retooled opening title sequence, featuring footage of the co-hosts in a loft-like space. Hilary Estey McLoughlin was named senior executive producer in January 2017, after she was brought on as a consultant for season 19. In September, ABC promoted Teta to executive producer ahead of the 21st-season premiere.

Timeline

Seasons 1–10

The show premiered with four co-hosts: Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Debbie Matenopoulos, and Barbara Walters. Joy Behar, who was originally announced to be occasionally filling in as the fourth co-host when Walters was unavailable, soon became a full-time co-host. Following Matenopoulos's departure in December 1998, Lisa Ling was brought on as a new co-host in 1999. Ling departed the show in 2002 to host National Geographic Explorer. Former Survivor: The Australian Outback castaway Elisabeth Hasselbeck replaced Ling beginning November 24, 2003 after Hasselbeck, Rachel Campos-Duffy, and Erin Hershey Presley each received a week-long on-air tryout.

On April 6, 2006, Vieira announced that she was leaving the show to become co-anchor of the long-running NBC News program Today, replacing Katie Couric. Her final episode aired on June 9. On June 27, 2006, Jones announced her departure from the show on air, stating that she would remain on the show through July. Despite this, Walters announced the next day that Jones would no longer appear on the show with the exception of previously recorded segments, publicly claiming feeling "betrayed" by Jones for unexpectedly making the announcement two days ahead of schedule. In an interview with People, Jones claimed the decision to leave was not hers and that the producers told her they would not be renewing her contract back in April. Walters later stated that ABC executives had decided not to renew Jones' contract due to diminished approval for Jones through their market research.

During the 33rd Daytime Emmy Awards on April 28, 2006, it was announced that former talk show host Rosie O'Donnell would be joining the show for its tenth season. O'Donnell made her debut as the new co-host and moderator of the show on September 5. On April 25, 2007, O'Donnell announced she would be leaving the show when her contract expires due to the network not being able to come to terms on a new contract. On May 25, ABC announced that O'Donnell had asked to be let out of her contract nearly a month before its expiration and that she had been granted permission to depart immediately.

Seasons 11–17

On August 1, 2007, Barbara Walters announced that Whoopi Goldberg would be replacing O'Donnell as moderator for season 11. Sherri Shepherd started appearing as a permanent co-host September 10, 2007, marking the first time in the show's history that two African-American women were a part of the panel. Rotating guest co-hosts filled in for Elisabeth Hasselbeck while she was on maternity leave from October 2007 to January 2008 and again from August to October 2009. On August 30, 2009, Goldberg, Joy Behar, Shepherd, Hasselbeck, and Walters won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host. Following the show on May 10, 2010, Barbara Walters took a hiatus from the show for heart surgery. The premiere of season 14 marked Walters's return. On March 7, 2013, it was announced that Behar would be leaving the show at the end of season 16. The next day, reports surfaced that Hasselbeck was to leave the show at the end of the season due to market research showing that both her and Behar's views were too polarizing to viewers, which Walters denied. Despite this, Hasselbeck announced on the July 10 episode that she was leaving The View to join Fox News and that it was her last day on the show. Behar's final show, a This is Your Life-style tribute to her, aired on August 9. On May 13, Walters confirmed on air that she would be retiring from ABC News and as co-host of The View in May 2014, but that she would remain executive producer on the show. On July 15, Walters announced that Jenny McCarthy would become a permanent co-host. Walters' final episode aired on May 16, 2014, with all former co-hosts and several guests returning for a special broadcast. On June 26, ABC confirmed that Shepherd and McCarthy had been let go from the show, leaving Goldberg as the sole remaining panelist to return for season 18.

Seasons 18–present

The return of Rosie O'Donnell as permanent co-host was announced on July 10, 2014. On September 3, ABC announced Rosie Perez and Nicolle Wallace had also signed on as permanent co-hosts. Perez, an actress and choreographer, and Wallace, an MSNBC political analyst and former Bush White House communications chief. On February 7th 2015, O'Donnell confirmed that she was once again leaving the show, citing a desire to spend more time with her family and personal health concerns. Her final appearance was on February 12. On June 10, ABC announced that recurring contributor Raven-Symoné had signed on as permanent co-host. On July 7, Perez announced that she would be leaving at the end of the eighteenth season to focus on her acting career. On July 15, it was reported that Wallace was being let go, with the option to come back as a guest contributor. On August 25, ABC announced former co-host Joy Behar had signed on to return as permanent co-host, while reoccurring contributor Candace Cameron Bure and Good Morning America Weekend anchor Paula Faris were also announced to be joining as permanent co-hosts. This marked the first time in over two years that The View had a panel of at least four women.

Throughout 2016, ABC announced Good Morning America correspondent Sara Haines, Fox News contributor Jedediah Bila, and Sunny Hostin, a reoccurring contributor on The View since the seventeenth season, would become permanent co-hosts ahead of the launch of the show’s twentieth-season. On October 27, Raven-Symoné announced on air that she would be leaving in December to focus on Raven's Home, a That's So Raven spin-off TV series coming to the Disney Channel network. On December 8, Candace Cameron Bure announced that she was leaving, effective immediately, to focus on her Netflix original series Fuller House, which films in California. With the exception of Faris sitting in for Goldberg on Friday, this marked the first time in almost two years that The View had a panel which does not alternate during the week. Despite initially stating that she was considering leaving after season 20, Goldberg was reported to have signed on again as moderator. On September 18, 2017, Bila announced on air that she was leaving the show, effective immediately. Meghan McCain was subsequently reported to be considering signing on to the show after recently leaving her position at Fox News. McCain made her debut as permanent co-host on the October 9 episode. From January to March 2018, while Haines was out on maternity leave Ana Navarro, Yara Shahidi, Greta Van Susteren, Ashley Graham, Keke Palmer, Wendy Williams, Jordin Sparks, Rob Riggle, Alicia Menendez, Yvette Nicole Brown, Ann Curry, La La Anthony, Gretchen Carlson, and S. E. Cupp filled in for her seat as special guest co-hosts, with Navarro appearing multiple times.

Recent notable episodes

On July 29, 2010, President Barack Obama appeared as a guest. On February 22, 2012, former co-host Star Jones returned as a guest for the first time since her firing and discussed her contentious exit from the show. On February 7, 2014, Rosie O'Donnell returned as a guest for the first time since she left as permanent co-host in 2007.

On May 15, 2014, Michael Douglas, Hillary Clinton, along with several women that Walters paved the way for as the first female broadcaster in television, such as Robin Roberts, Katie Couric, Oprah, and Diane Sawyer, surprised Walters on the show to honor her retirement. On March 27, 2015, the 4000th episode of The View aired, former co-host Joy Behar and Walters both returned to celebrate the occasion. To kick off season 20 on September 5, 2016, a documentary entitled The View: 20 Years, which featured notable moments from the show's history, premiered on ABC on August 23, 2016 On November 8, 2016, during election night 2016, a special primetime version of The View aired on the Lifetime network. On November 11, 2016, a secret reunion episode titled “Flashback Friday” featured four of the original co-hosts Jones, Meredith Vieira, and Debbie Matenopoulos, alongside Behar. Walters was unavailable to attend.

In March 2017, The View had a series of remote broadcasts from Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, which were filmed in front of the Tree of Life at Disney's Animal Kingdom. The episodes featured the co-hosts exploring Magic Kingdom, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Epcot. James Cameron was a guest on the March 9 episode, giving a preview of Pandora – The World of Avatar, while other guests included Mandy Moore, Ariel Winter, Audra McDonald, John Stamos, along with Art Smith, and Masaharu Morimoto, as well as musical performances by Train, and Andy Grammer. On August 11, 2017, ABC re-aired the show's first episode, which originally aired on the same date in 1997.

Critical response

A New York Times review, published ten days after the show premiered in 1997, describes what critic Caryn James thought was distinctive about the show:

The idea of women talking to one another on daytime television is not exactly radical. The idea that those women should be smart and accomplished is still odd enough to make The View seem wildly different. It actively defies the bubbleheads-'R'-us approach to women's talk shows.

In 2002, Virginia Heffernan of Slate complimented the chemistry between Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Joy Behar, and Barbara Walters, writing that the women "have eased completely into the stock sensibility of middle-aged talk shows, embracing the imperatives that one be healthy, careful, temperate, charitable, and moderately cutesy while at the same time skeptical, ribald, and world-weary."

During her first run on the show in 2006, while regarded as outspoken, Rosie O'Donnell was criticized for not acting as a moderator oftentimes during discussions, during which she would interject her–often liberal–viewpoints. Due to this, O'Donnell faced backlash from conservative media outlets. However, as a big-name talent, she was credited for keeping the show's "buzz factor" up. In October 2010, Tom Shales of The Washington Post praised the "fearless tackling of current controversies and political outrages” while other daytime talk show’s were “soft-pedaling around issues”. In September 2014, Michael Shulman The New Yorker complimented the upcoming season during premiere week as “a calmer, more substantial view”, adding that “Queen Barbara would be proud”.

In March 2017, Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly gave the show acclaim, praising it as "doing for daytime television what the Daily Show has done for primetime in that it offers viewers a show that deals in genuine opinion and not mere fluff." In April, the New York Post attributed the show's resurgence in viewership to its political discussions. In August, David Hinckey of Huff Post opined that the show has been successful in consistently implementing its original premise and that in regards to its co-hosts, it has "sought to maintain a balance in areas like ethnicity and ideology. While most of the panelists over the years have tilted a bit to the left, there has always been a voice from the right that’s unafraid to speak up."

U.S. television ratings

In June 2005, the show was reported to have 2.7 million total viewers. In November 2008, the series post-election day telecast became the most-watched episode in the show's history with 6.2 million total viewers. That was surpassed in July 2010, when former President Barack Obama first appeared as a guest on The View, which had a total of 6.6 million viewers. In 2013, the show was reported to be averaging 3.1 million daily viewers, which outpaced rival talk show The Talk.

In May 2014, the farewell to Barbara Walters garnered 5.2 million total viewers, ranking as the fourth most-watched broadcast in the show’s history. The season 18 premiere, which debuted in September 2014, marked the return of Rosie O'Donnell and drew 3.902 million viewers, which was the show's second largest season premiere audience to date. In January 2015, it was reported that the show's viewership was down nine percent among their target demographic of women 25–54.

In August 2017, it was reported that season 20 of the show averaged 2.816 million daily viewers, making it the only broadcast daytime show to grow their overall audience from the last season, while also being their most watched season in three years. In January 2018, The View was reported to be averaging 3.273 million daily viewers, outpacing rival talk show The Talk in Women 18-49 and total viewers, giving them their largest lead since the 2012-2013 season.
