The story of a young office-worker with a scarred face and a troubled history who learns to overcome her habitually solitary lifestyle, the book has been praised by critics. Jenny Colgan, reviewing the book for The Guardian, described it as a " a narrative full of quiet warmth and deep and unspoken sadness" with a "wonderful, joyful" ultimate message.
In May 2017 the film rights were optioned by Reese Witherspoon's company Hello Sunshine.
