The Kovalevskaia Fund is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to support and encourage women in developing countries in science, mathematics, engineering, and medicine. Named for the 19th century Russian mathematician and feminist Sofia Kovalevskaia, it was founded in 1985 by Ann Hibner Koblitz and her husband Neal, soon after the publication of A. H. Koblitz's biography of Kovalevskaia. Initially formed as a subcommittee within the U.S. Committee for Scientific Cooperation with Vietnam, it soon was established as an independent foundation in order to work in other countries as well.
The Kovalevskaia Fund finances prizes and awards for women scientists in Vietnam, Mexico,, Peru, Cuba, and southern Africa. The Kovalevskaia Fund does not select prize winners; rather, the competitions for the awards are run by the partner organizations in the recipient countries. These are: the Vietnam Women's Union, the Sociedad Matemática Mexicana (Mexican Mathematical Society), the Grupo Mujeres Peruanas en Ciencias Matemáticas (Group of Peruvian Women in the Mathematical Sciences), the Academia de Ciencias de Cuba (Cuban Academy of Sciences), and the Southern Africa Mathematical Sciences Association.
In August 2016 the Kovalevskaia Fund cosponsored and helped finance the Banff International Research Station workshop in Oaxaca, Mexico on "Women in Mathematics in Latin America."
