Octane Render is a real-time 3D unbiased rendering application that was started by the New Zealand-based company Refractive Software, Ltd and OTOY took over in March 2012. The first non-beta stable version, v1.0, was released on 28 November 2012 and later versions of Octane Render continue to be deployed as a Web release software. It is the first commercially available unbiased renderer to work exclusively on the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) and thus due to the parallel processing power of the GPU, it has the ability to work in real time, or at least render faster than most CPU based path tracers. This allows users to modify materials, lighting and render settings “on the fly” because the rendering viewport updates immediately whenever a change is made. Octane Render runs exclusively on Nvidia's CUDA technology (which restricts it to running on video cards from Nvidia) although Octane Render 3.1 is planned to remove this restriction.

Overview

Octane Render is the first GPU-based unbiased renderer to be released to the public. It uses the graphics card to calculate all measures of light, reflection and refraction.

Octane Render will also be used in the that makes use of Ethereum based smart contracts and a token called Render Token . The CO-Founder Jules Urbach had a vision to combine all the GPU Power and to merge them into one. With the use of Blockchain technology he was finally able to combine all the pieces and create the Render Token project. The Company called OTOY buildt this token-based render network on their program Octanerender. This way, using the Octane Render program with Network scalability and the use of a better use for this GPU Power rather than guessing random number trying to mine virtual currencies. Now there are massive opportunities to hire a piece of this massive power and will enhance the gaming, medical and media industry.

Acquisition

On 13 March 2012, it was announced that Refractive Software® has been acquired by OTOY.
