'''''AdventureQuest''''' (also referred to by its website name '''BattleOn''' or as simply '''AQ''') is an online single-player ] developed by ] in ]. It is implemented in ] and uses ]-style ], some of which are ].

Each account may have up to five characters. The game allows characters to engage in ] against ]s to accumulate ] (known as XP) and ]. Characters have a ] and six stats to train, and some have a specific ]. Players may use gold to purchase ]s, ], ]s, ]s, pets and miscellaneous items to aid them in combat. There are areas to explore, and special events such as holidays and wars, for players to meet new types of monsters and complete ].

Players may play a limited version of ''AdventureQuest'' for ] (free players are called Adventurers), or ] a one-time fee of US $19.95 to become a Guardian and unlock extra features of the game. An X-Boost, which costs an additional US $5, if bought with Guardianship, and $10.95 for existing Guardians, grants the player 10% extra XP per battle and other benefits. Guardians may also play ''DragonFable'' and ''ArchKnight'', two other Artix games loosely based on AdventureQuest. As there is a limit on how many free players may play simultaneously, and the free version of the game is very limited, some consider the free version to be simply a ], instead of a free web RPG.

==Gameplay==
===Combat===
Much of ''AdventureQuest'''s gameplay revolves around fighting monsters. In a fight, characters and monsters take turns attacking each other to reduce each other's health (known as HP).

On its turn, a character may attack with its weapon, cast a spell, drink a potion, use special items, or flee. Before performing any of these activities, a player may change their character's weapon, shield, armor and pet. On a monster's turn, it may only attack, though some monsters have special attacks, such as healing.

]

Several factors can affect the outcome of a battle. Both characters and monsters have a "defense modifier" for each of the eight elements; a higher defense modifier means an attack of that element does more damage. If the defense modifier goes to negative values, an attack of that particular element will heal. Unlike many monsters, players cannot achive negative defense modifiers. There is also a defense modifier for each of the three methods of attacks: melee, ranged and magic; a lower number means greater vulnerability to that method of attack. Players usually change their character's weapon, shield and armour according to the monster's defense modifiers.

Six stats affect the amount of damage inflicted and taken, as well as the probability of an attack being resisted. In addition, pets assist the character in doing extra damage. Strategic use of spells and items will give a character an advantage in combat.

Once a monster's HP drops below zero, the monster dies, and the character is awarded with XP and gold. Sometimes, they may also be rewarded with Z-tokens. If a character's HP drops below zero, the character dies, and has to speak to a ] named DEATH to return to Battleon without any penalties imposed.

===Shops and equipment===
]

There are six types of equipment which increase a character's effectiveness in combat:

*'''Weapons''' are used to attack and do damage on monsters.
*'''Shields''' affect a character's defense modifier.
*'''Armour''', like shields, affect a character's defense modifier and also can give extra attacks.
*'''Spells''' are an alternative method of attack.
*'''Pets''' offer a bonus attack.

''AdventureQuest'' has many shops where players may purchase equipment using gold. Every piece of equipment has a level requirement which the character must meet to be able to buy it. If a player regrets buying any equipment, they may sell the equipment at a loss. A character may hold up to eight of each type of equipment at a time, while they may purchase storage space to hold items outside of battle. Most equipment specializes in one of the eight elements (fire, ice, water, wind, earth, energy, light and darkness), but some equipment do not specialize in any element.

===Quests, events and challenges===
]
The most basic fights are started through random encounters (by clicking the "Battle Monsters") button, and after winning such fights, characters return to Battleon and can be fully healed by Artix.

Besides random encounters, players can embark on quests. Quests are generally more challenging than random encounters because the character has to fight several monsters, and usually is not given the opportunity to heal in between battles. Some quests entail additional challenges, such as rolling a die and continuing only if a high number is rolled.

Many quests are started by speaking to non-player characters or exploring regions on the map. Events are quests which are available for a limited period of time. There are annual events during ''AdventureQuest'' "holidays", such as Mogloween and Frostvale, and one-time events, such as wars. In challenges, characters have to defeat as many monsters as possible, but unlike quests, there is no reward or storyline.

===Stats===

Characters have six stats which affect their success in combat:

]

*Strength (STR) increases the random damage of melee (and ranged) attacks, and the accuracy of melee attacks.
*Dexterity (DEX) increases the random damage of ranged (and melee) attacks, the accuracy of all types of attacks, and the ability to block attacks.
*Intellect (INT) increases the random damage of magic attacks, the accuracy of magic attacks, and the character's maximum MP.
*Endurance (END) increases the character's maximum HP.
*Charisma (CHA) increases the damage and accuracy of pets and guests.
*Luck (LUK) increases a character's chance of going first in a battle, finding a treasure chest, and dodging monster attacks, as well as affecting accuracy for all attack types.

For each combat level a character gains, they are given 5 stat points. They may use these stat points to train their stats by paying a stat trainer and defeating them in combat.

If a player regrets training a stat, they may untrain their character's stats by doing the "Death's Domain" quest and losing to Sir Pwnsalot in combat. However, the money spent in training the stat will not be refunded.

==Events==
Events are a system in ''AdventureQuest'' used to keep the content fresh and new. These have ranged from Wars, such as the Carnax Saga, to Holiday celebrations, such as Mogloween (Halloween). Some events are reused, such as the Wizard Games and Frostval events. Many events are new, like the recent 'Monster Herders' and people can travel back in time to some of the older wars, though not getting the 'better' rewards from them.

===Wars===
As well as random encounters and quest battling, there are also events called wars. These are server-wide events that call for a certain amount of monsters to be defeated before players move on to a boss battle, which is available to all players. If a player defeats the boss they will be given the chance to claim a war prize. In the past, players did not actually have to slay the boss to get the rare prize. The matter was resolved by implementing a system where items are now purchased in a store, which can be accessed only after defeating the boss monster. Weapons are the most common war rewards. They often do more damage than weapons available normally or have other advantages, such as powerful specials.

Several new war methods are being held currently, including a manually updated percentage bar and a quest-style war where there is no waiting bar for the boss. Some wars have had a limited time to be completed for the rewards to be made available. Currently, it seems that the manually updated percentage bar is preferred by the staff. The servers can handle 2 different wars at the same time. There is also a type of war where players can fight for one side or another. Whichever side fills their quota for enemies defeated fights a boss and collects the rewards from the chest. Recently, there have only been two wars that were two-sided. They were the Necromancer vs. Paladin war and the Werewolf vs. Vampire war. The Necromancers and the Werewolves won their respective wars.

Also, there are Clan Wars. These wars are for those who join a clan.

===Holiday Events===
To celebrate holidays in the United States and Canada, holidays events are created for players to enjoy. Some of the more known holidays that go along with their real time counterparts are Mogloween (]), Frostval (]), Talk Like A Pirate Day (]), Snugglefest (]), and Grenwog (]). These events typically have themes that mirror the holidays celebrated.

===Clans===

Clans are in-game groups of players who align themselves with a different side in a growing battle. Players may add currency to their clan's stash, raise its HP through minigames, or just fight battles in their clan's name. There are only three clans in which all players may choose from. Once a player has chosen a clan, they may not leave or change to different side.

The differences in clans are:

'''Geoto''': Aligned with the element of earth and melee attacks. Medium attack power and defence.

'''Aerodu''': Aligned with the element of air and ranged attacks. High attack power and low defence.

'''Nautica''': Aligned with the element of water and magic attacks. Low attack power and high defence.

There are five more clans that are soon to be available to both free players and ], however they take a long quest (Explore Paxia) to join. At this moment however, it is not possible to join these other 5 clans.

An other option for members and free players alike is to make clans of their own.

==Guardianship==
Guardianship is a "]" version of AdventureQuest, which players can buy for a one-time fee. As AdventureQuest has grown, Artix Entertainment has raised the fee several times; as of ] ], Guardianship costs $19.95, which can be paid for using ], ], or ]. Players who have bought this premium version are called "Guardians", while those playing the free version are called "Adventurers".

This premium version offers players several benefits. It grants access to additional quests, events, wars and locations. Many weapons, armours, shields, pets and other items in the game are only available to Guardians. Besides starting with two health and mana potions (instead of one of each type for Adventurers), Guardians have more powerful starting weapons, and can train up to level 10 in each class (instead of 5 for Adventurers). In addition, they can log in at any time, despite the ] which limits the number of Adventurers that may play simultaneously.<ref>http://www.battleon.com/aq-guardian.asp?src=navbartext</ref>

===Z-Tokens===
Introduced in June 2006 to replace the former system of donating money for items, Z-Tokens are rare coins in AdventureQuest, which players (both Adventurers and Guardians) will occasionally find after winning battles. Guardians may also purchase Z-Tokens with real money, with various exchange rates, including $9.95 for 2000 Z-Tokens.

Players may exchange Z-Tokens for in-game gold (at the rate of about 12.5 gold per Z-Token), or use Z-Tokens to buy weapons, shields, armour and pets which are generally more powerful than those bought with in-game gold.<ref>http://www.battleon.com/aq-tokens.asp</ref>

==Criticism==
===Server cap===
There is a limit on the number of free players which can play simultaneously. The limit was fixed at 4,000 during the early days of AdventureQuest, but it currently fluctuates from 8,000 to 30,000 according to time of day and server load. Once the limit is reached, only Guardians may log in, until sufficient players log out or the limit increases.

]

Because of the server cap, it can be difficult for free players to log in, especially because the server limit may occasionally decrease by nearly 50%, and all the available slots are usually taken moments after the server limit is increased.

Free players have tried various means to bypass the server cap. A web browser script that would immediately log a player in once it detected an available slot on the server was once available. In the past, there have been bugs which could be exploited by free players bypass the server cap, but these bugs have been fixed. Some fan sites offer server stats to give players a good idea of when to log in. Some free players, after successfully logging in, leave their computer on continuously to stay logged in.

Free accounts start out with 25 free logins that are used once every time that account logs into the game. AdventureQuest provides a survey that upon completion grants users another 24 hours of unlimited free logins.<ref>http://www.battleon.com/survey/player.asp</ref> Additionally, after confirming the account's e-mail address, they get 48 hours of unlimited free login time, to help them become familiar with the game. After all free logins are used up and the server cap hinders logging in, it is suggested by staff to play another game or pay to continue playing. <ref>http://forums2.battleon.com/f/fb.asp?m=6271596&key=</ref>

Artix Entertainment defends the server cap as a way of controlling server load and covering the cost of running the game.<ref>http://www.battleon.com/help/aq-accounts-serverfull.asp</ref> AdventureQuest may eventually add ] to the game to allow more servers to be purchased.

===Lack of free content===
Most of the content, quests and updates are only available to Guardians; therefore, the free version of AdventureQuest is very limited. Some updates, such as X-Guardianship and Z-Tokens, entirely focus on new ways to pay for in-game content. The constant reminders to buy Guardianship are often perceived as a form of ], and these, combined with the server cap, lead some to perceive the free version of AdventureQuest as a ], instead of a free web RPG.

===Monotony and lack of features===
AdventureQuest has been criticised for its ], which primarily consists of killing monsters to gain experience and gold. There is little strategy involved in winning battles, and training takes a long time, often requiring the player to repeat tedious tasks. However, this criticism could also be applied to other RPGs, such as ].

In addition, AdventureQuest has also been criticised for lacking basic features present in other ]. Artix Entertainment rebuts by reminding players that AdventureQuest is still in the testing stage and thus lacks many features, and that the game has weekly updates and is ever-changing. Originally intended to be a simple, single-player RPG, AdventureQuest has grown much faster than Artix anticipated, and rewriting the game engine to add extra features is not feasible.

===Lack of in-game interaction===
Being a ] game, AdventureQuest provides no means of in-game interaction between players. This has been cited as a reason for its small market share in the online RPG genre. Several commonly-requested in-game interaction features, which Artix Entertainment has repeatedly stated will not be implemented, include:
* ]. Some high-levelled players find the monsters too easy, boring or tedious, and wish to challenge other players. DragonFable has a system which allows one to challenge other players, but the characters of the other players are computer-controlled.
* ]. In the past, players were able to trade items with the approval of a staff member, but this feature was removed because the staff could not handle the backlog of requests.
*In-game messaging and friends/block lists. The are an avenue for players to meet and interact with other players, but players must register for a forum account.

===X-Guardian Boost and Z-Tokens===
The introduction of the X-Guardian Boost and Z-Tokens have been met with some controversy. Some Guardians are unhappy that despite Artix Entertainment's claims that Guardianship grants access to all features and future updates in AdventureQuest, they still have to pay for the X-Boost to enjoy "everything". The X-Boost has been criticised for offering numerical benefits (such as 10,000 gold, 200 Z-Tokens and 10% more XP per battle) instead of useful features. Some regard the X-Boost and Z-Tokens as marketing ploys by Artix Entertainment to convince players to pay for in-game benefits. It should be noted that Z-Tokens are available to Adventurers.

== Character Classes ==

There is a constantly growing amount of classes in ''AdventureQuest''. Classes were first introduced after the Dragon War Saga, when the player slayed the legendary Fire Dragon Akriloth and was awarded with the Dragonslayer class, however this was in name only as it had no effect until the real class came out. Each class has a specific armor or two that allow players to use class only abilities. Skills are unlocked with each level gained in the class, which is obtained through quests given by the class trainer. Currently, Adventurers can only go up to Level 5 in class abilities, while Guardians and X-Guardians can go to the full 10.

'''Fighter'''

A basic warrior. Their class abilities focus on pure melee attacks. When your fighter class level is 5, you will unlock the knight class.

* This class has an "elite" armor type, the Golden Holy Armor.

'''Dragon Slayer'''

A person who devotes their life to dragon-slaying. Their abilities are weak on their own, as is their Armor, but they become truly deadly when facing any monster with "Dragon" in their name. Their true power is unleashed when wielding the "Dragon Blade". There are also four other elemental Dragon Blades: Light; Dark; Ice; and Mega(only available through Z-Token shop), which deals its damage in whatever element the dragon is weakest to.

* This class has three "elite" armor types, the Elite Dragon Slayer, Golden Dragon Slayer, and Golden Dragon Slayer Eclipse.

'''Dracomancer'''

A person who studies under High Khan Cyrus to learn and protect the ancient knowledge of dragons. Their abilities focus on the power of dragons, such as turning their own hand into a fiery dragon talon, or turning into half dragons themselves.

* This class has an "elite" armor type, the NightHunter Vampire Slayer.

'''Beast Master'''

A class planned to be released soon.

'''Sub-Race'''

While not a true class, Sub-Races are very similar classes. One can choose to become either a ], or a ]. Both have separate weapons to use and their armors have special powers. Guardians can also become a Werepyre, a combination of the two which harnesses the power of both Werewolves and Vampires. Werepyres are given stronger armor and improved strength, though they cannot wield weapons (no weapon is shown, though it is possible to change attack elements an attack strength by "weapon" switching) and are shunned by both the Werewolves and Vampires.

Death appears during the Blade of Awe's rare instant kill mode, and he can be battled at a high level. NOTE: Guardians can travel to Death's shadowy lair without dying by going to the moon in Granemor. You will end up in the Void, where you will fight monsters. Currently, Nightbane is at his full power there, and you can fight him freely.

'''Drakonnan''':
Drakonnan is a powerful fire mage whose family was killed by Akriloth, the Great Fire Dragon. He swore revenge on all and took thousands of fire creatures to his slavery. From that moment, the Great Fire War (a massive war between the Guardians and Adventurers of Lore and Drakonnan's Forces) began. Drakonnan fashioned many Fire Orbs, with two as his primary ones. When the Adventurers and Guardians assaulted Drakonnan's Lair, they destroyed his fire orbs along with the primary ones. With their many assaults of Ice Katanas, Ice Spells and Water Spells, they defeated Drakonnan and his army. In the process, Drakonnan's volcanic lair erupted, causing a flow of magma to surge through. Drakonnan disappeared in the volcanic explosion, and is now presumed to be dead.

It likes how you are right to the point and says it's leaving a gift for wolfwing and offers to give it to you. Epheel says it will protect you from magic attacks, but in the future, it will begin to glow meaning that someone or something has come to do the work of the Devourer and you must hunt it and kill it. Then it leaves and says that you will meet again. After defeating Nightbane Epheel talks to him and says everything is in place and no one can stop him.

'''The Frogzard Hunter''':
Based on ], the Frogzard Hunter will take you through quests with Frogzard-heavy plots that often involve him being attacked by various frogzards. The Frogzard Hunter has his own shop, where you can get various reptillian pets, Australian style weapons, and a permanent version of the Frogzard Hunter armor.

After going on a rampage and killing almost all of the Vampires and Werewolves, he fell into hiding when Wolfwing confronted him. Years later, he resurfaced from the underground, and came to rule Darkovia. By converting the Vampires and Werewolves into Dracovamps and Dracowolves with his Nightraiders, he was able to reduce the Darkovian armies. Nightbane cannot convert people into pure Dracopyres, however. It was temporarily believe by some that he killed Wolfwing, that is, until Wolfwing opened his eyes after Nightbane fled his own castle.

'''Robina Hood''':
Robina is a noble human Ranger who "steals from the rich and gives to the animals." She can sometimes join you on quests in special events and wars. She replaced twilly outside the inn but was soon replaced by Artix.

Some people believe he is so evil, that he could have been Carnax's master but has been proved wrong by the future war(rumour end). Twilly often follows you in AdventureQuest and in a recent event, he follows you into a portal that takes you to the future. Twilly wields a wooden stick with a leaf at the top that he uses in combat. However, Twilly is not a very good fighter and often resorts to healing. In events you can get Twilly as a guest, where on his turn he heals you, regenerates your mana or does a weak attack. Recently, he has been replaced by Robina as the greeter when your character first logs in. Robina was in turn replaced by Artix.

'''Valencia''':
A rare item hunter that can help you make a Blade Of Awe and use the travel passes. She is also the one currently responsible for the Z-token shop. She also can change the colour of your guardian armour. If you give her a pet rock she will give you a travel pass for free players.

Like Safiria, he can give you quests that will increase your Lycanthropic powers. In the Nightbane Chronicles (part 3), he and Safiria took part in the Siege of Nightbane's Castle, and was also like Safiria a special guest available only to Guardians. In one part before the Siege of Castle Nightbane, Safiria and the Were-King are seen by the player's character, and the Were-King referred to it as, "a hate-hate relationship" when the player's character asked why they were together.

'''Wolfwing''':
Wolfwing is the master of the fabled Werepyres; he is an extremely powerful enemy who only offers bragging rights when defeated. Known mostly to the Guardians he has a mysterious past with the also fabled Nightbane. It is not clear if he is really the father of Nightbane, since it was mentioned in the second part of the Nightbane Chronicles:

"Of all my ''children'', you kept the most promise. But now, look at you!" --Wolfwing

During a battle with Nightbane, he was serverely injured and was thought to have died, but at an end scene, his eyes awaken, indicating he did not die at the hands Nightbane. After part three of the Nightbane Chronicles, it was confirmed that Nightbane is the actual son of Wolfwing.

'''Yulgar''':
Yulgar is the owner of the Inn in Battleon. He sells many different weapons and can heal you. You can also battle him at the end of a quest which is recommended for high levels only.

'''Zorbak''':
Zorbak is a moglin ], who is very "ebil" (cute evil, he claims that he is 'better than evil, but that would make him good, so he's just ebil'). Zorbak is blue with bright red eyes and has a scar on the left or right eye, as the only image used for him, a profile view, is commonly flipped. The plush doll has a scar on his right eye, however. He also wears a tattered gray cloak and his face is always in an evil sneer. In early versions (and still sometimes today), he carries a ] with a ] instead of the traditional moglin ] ]. Zorbak is one of the only evil moglins in AdventureQuest, besides his brother, Kabroz (Zorbak backwards). He appears in many instances:

*The Zorbak/Safiria Challenge (where he teams up with the queen of vampires.)

*In Death's Domain (or the Hourglass Quest), one will get to play as Zorbak for several battles.

*In another quest, a farmer named Seahawk becomes follows him around, and asks him to train him as a ]. Zorbak begs the player to get rid of him. The player can choose to help or not. The quest has multiple endings.
