Neil Patrick Harris (born June 15, 1973 in Albuquerque, New Mexico) is an American actor. He is best known for his role as Doogie Howser, M.D., in which he portrayed a teenage doctor, although his current (and very contrasting) role in How I Met Your Mother is gaining increasing attention.

Harris' singing voice landed him a role as Tobias Ragg in several concert performances of Sweeney Todd. He also was in the 2000 film The Next Best Thing, and made a guest appearance in the episode "Girls, Interrupted" of the NBC sitcom Will & Grace.

Harris also guest starred as a murder suspect in a 1997 episode of Homicide: Life on the Street, and he also appeared in an episode of Law and Order: Criminal Intent in 2004, cast against type as a Jeffrey Dahmer-like serial killer. He also appears in a cameo as himself in a 1991 episode of the Simpsons ("Bart the Murderer").

In 2002, he performed on Broadway beside Anne Heche in Proof. In 2003, he performed in Cabaret, alongside Deborah Gibson and Tom Bosley, where he played the role of the Emcee. In 2004, he performed a dual role of the Balladeer and Lee Harvey Oswald on Broadway in the controversial musical revival of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins. He also sang the role of Charles (first played by Anthony Perkins) on the Nonesuch recording of Sondheim's Evening Primrose.

He also played a version of himself in the movie Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle in 2004.

Harris currently plays Barney on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, which debuted in the fall of 2005 and has been renewed for a second season which debuted Fall 2006.

The existence of another actor named Neil Harris at the outset of his acting career led Harris to include his middle name in his working name.
