Suicide Squad 2 is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics antihero team Suicide Squad. It is intended to be the sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad and an installment in the DC Extended Universe. The film will be written and directed by Gavin O'Connor and stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, and Karen Fukuhara.

Cast

An expert marksman and assassin.
A psychopathic supervillain.
A crazed supervillain and former psychiatrist.
A West Point graduate and Army Special Forces Colonel who leads the Suicide Squad in the field.
An expert martial artist and swordswoman who mourns her husband's death.

Production

In March 2016, it was announced that Warner Bros. would bring director David Ayer and actor Will Smith back for a Suicide Squad sequel, to be shot in 2017 after the pair completed filming another project, Bright, in 2016. The following month, Ayer expressed an interest in making the sequel R-rated. Karen Fukuhara had stated that she wanted to explore Katana's backstory in the sequel. In December 2016, Ayer exited the sequel when he started developing another project, Gotham City Sirens, for the studio.

On February 15, 2017, it was revealed that Mel Gibson was in very early negotiations to helm the sequel, while the studio was also looking for other directors including Daniel Espinosa. In March 2017, The Legend of Tarzan writer Adam Cozad was hired to write the screenplay. On July 11, 2017, it was reported that Jaume Collet-Serra had been a studio's front-runner choice to direct the sequel with the schedule to begin production in mid-2018, later he withdrew in the same month after he joined the Dwayne Johnson's starring Disney's Jungle Cruise, and the studio was in search for another director. Zak Penn had also submitted a story treatment and a new script was being written. At San Diego Comic-Con, the film was officially titled Suicide Squad 2. Jared Leto will reprise his role as the Joker in the film. Late August 2017, Variety's Justin Kroll posted on his Twitter confirming that the film would not start production until fall 2018 because of Smith's filming schedule of Disney's Aladdin and Paramount's Gemini Man. On September 6, 2017, Deadline confirmed that the studio had chosen Gavin O'Connor to direct the sequel which ended a lengthy search of a director to replace Ayer, while Variety reported that O'Connor would also write the screenplay for the film. In November 2017, TheWrap reported that the film might introduce the DC's super-villain Black Adam before its own solo film.

In June 2018, the studio hired David Bar Katz and Todd Stashwick to write the screenplay for the film along with O'Connor. That October, James Gunn was hired to write the screenplay and entered negotiations to direct the film, with O'Connor usurping the position in favor of directing Torrance, also with Warner Bros.

Filming

Suicide Squad 2 is reported to begin production in October 2018 in the UK.
