Hogenakal Falls, on the border of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, is a waterfall in the southern India state of on the Kaveri River. It is located 180 km from Bangalore and 46 km fro Dharmapuri in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu.

The river

The Kaveri River falls to lower elevations here, creating numerous waterfalls as the water cuts through the rocky terrain on through a forested valley of tall trees, splitting around rocks and outcrops of boulders and little island, then merging and splitting again. These rocky outcropping are only cover during the monsson season of rains. In places the water falls as much as 20 m, sounding like thunder.

Bathing

Before reaching Hogenakkal, the river flows through a forest of herbs that are traditionally believed to enhance healh, making bathing in these waters curative. Hogemakkal, set in thick, green woods, is considered a sacred bathing place, earning the distinction of a health resort having waterfalls having medicinal effects.

There is a sandy beach , due to accumulation of Sand, where one can relax. Hogenakal Falls means Smoking Rocks in Kannada.It can be accessed from both the states of Tamilnadu and Karnataka. The river Kaveri at this point is a boundary between the two states.

At Hogenakal the water spreads for miles around and on these waters cruising on country made dinghies (PARISAL) is possible. Parisal ride will give an enthralling experience. Surrounding by hills at various heights Hogenakal offers the visitors a different ambience and refreshing relaxations. One could also take bath in the falls. Oil massaging by local people is a different experience. As the river flows throughout the year Hogenakal can be visited all days through the year. There are enough transport facility available from Dharmapuri & Krishnagiri.
