Information on deleted article

Hello!

I am attempting to publish a page. I have discovered that a page with the same title was deleted in 2015 by a User. I would like to contact the user to determine more information as to why she deleted the page, but cannot find a way to contact her through the links! Any suggestions are appreciated, thank you! Carole Basinger, the deletion log for that article shows that it was deleted because it didn't show that he was notable by the standards of WP:MUSIC. Someone call me? I heard a ping. The Brian Rosenworcel article was only a few sentences long and didn't indicate why he was a notable drummer and should have an article on Misplaced Pages. Because it was PROD'd, I can recover the page information and put it on a user page for you to work with, Carole Basinger. Hi Carole Basinger. Since your subject is a living person, the photo must be uploaded to Commons. If you took the photo yourself, you can upload it using Commons:Special:UploadWizard. If it was taken by someone else, have the photographer upload it there. —teb728 t c 19:48, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

I received a message that I should connect all the articles with the sources of Draft:Benjamin Schnau . I did that already on my last change.

What are you still asking for?

User Whispering is saying it would be OBVIOUS I don't do anything to make the article better which is an assumption he is doing which is offensive and rude and completely not the case.

I did what was asked for before already and now get that as a reply. Very unsatisfying.

@Franklin187: The article is probably not going to be approved right now because:

• Many of the sources you cited are not reliable.
• I'm having trouble finding which sources are independent.
• It's unclear what sources support what article material.

I've left instructions on your user talk page that explains the simple way to write articles that will not be rejected or deleted. You just need to summarize at least three professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources that are independent of Schnau but still specifically about him. That's it. Writing unsourced material and slapping on dozens of questionable sources is a waste of your time and ours.

@Franklin187: What you need to do is provide in-line citations. There are two in the article, which are insufficient. Also, both of those sources are IMDB, which is not a reliable source. IMBD is written by its users, not professionals.

As I've already explained here and on your user talk page, all you need to do is summarize three professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources that are independent of and unaffiliated with Schau. These should be in-line citations.

If you get on that as soon as possible, the article can be approved as soon as possible. Ian.thomson (talk) 21:42, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

It's unclear what sources support what article material points to the fact that you're not using enough in-line citations. Many of the sources you cited are not reliable addresses both sections.

It isn't an either/or problem, both are problems.

(edit conflict)Hi Franklin187. It might seem strange to you, but the only thing you should put under the heading References is {{Reflist}}. Each actual references goes immediately after the statement that it supports, and the system inserts a reference number and lists the references where you put {{Reflist}}. If you are employed or hired by him to be his agent/representative/public relations person, you are a paid editor and must declare it. We have no way of knowing if you are on your free time or not. Franklin187, after you have posted the required declarations, there are still points outlined in the post on your talk page that you have not addressed. The most important ones are a) citing sources properly, b) showing the person is notable, and c) removing promotional phrasing. You have gone some way towards a) by placing some of the URLs to your sources within <ref></ref> tags, in the relevant places, but there is still a list of unidentified URLs (not connected to any part of the article) in the "References" section, and you do have to cite the sources, that is, clearly identify them so that a reader can understand what the source is, and potentially find the information even if the URL should go away. The link to the information about that (which is also in point 4 in the list on your talk page) is Misplaced Pages:Citing sources. As for b) it doesn't really look as if you followed the advice in point 2. on your talk page - the sources in your article are still basically the same as they were before your draft was rejected, and as far as I can see without spending too much time looking into unidentifid URLs, there is really only one (Stern) that is independent and talks about Schnau in depth, as opposed to mentioning him in passing. This is what is required. (There are also several inadequate references on the page, including but not limited to links to Netflix, YouTube, and Misplaced Pages itself, which do not meet the requirements for "professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources".) As regards c), the draft is not entirely promotional, but it is also not neutrally written. That is often difficult when writing about topics where there is a conflict of interest, but it is not impossible. Who changed the search options and why?

The basic search I have done for years now no longer works. Now I have to select image types to search instead of just doing a search that delivers all the images mapped to a specific date. Who thought that was a good idea? Find that person who made that change and tell them they are an idiot. Listing cultural references from The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana

A question about the page The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana, a novel by Umberto Eco.

Umberto Eco was a semiotician: he worked with words, assigning meaning to words, connecting words by meaning, context, etc.

The novel contains hundreds of quotations/allusions from poems, novels, songs, sayings, paintings, illustrations, etc.

Intertextuality is the main thing in this novel: by identifying and connecting the quotations/allusions that spring into the main character's mind, the competent reader learns about the story and inner world of meanings of the main character, a guy who has lost his autobiographic, episodic memory but not his semantic memory, i.e. he only remembers words — in fact, a Hell or a Heaven for a semiotician.

Any competent reader can identify the quotation/allusion, the original author, the work the quotation has been extracted from or the allusion points to, the year of publication, etc. These pieces of information are not owned by Umberto Eco nor by anyone (except a few quotations might be copyrighted, i.e. owned by the original authors).

I would like to add these pieces of information to the main article, or perhaps to new articles:

Quotation/Allusion

Name of Author

Date of Birth

Date of Death

Nationality

Language

Title of the work being quoted or alluded to

Year of Publication

Website address as a reference for verification purposes

Misplaced Pages rules seem to allow the possibility to declare, with adequate references, the cultural connections that an author has chosen to reveal in their work, for example here or here, or even here, or here.

In the case of Umberto Eco's novel this would take up considerable space - probably many articles, perhaps one for each of the 18 chapters, as this project shows.

Would someone let me know what they think about it?, i.e. if such a project meets Misplaced Pages's criteria.

All I would say is that such an article would benefit by referring to any published critical commentary that discusses these allusions and associations in The Mysterious Flame. @Unarosaèunarosa: It is much appreciated that you sought advice here. In my view, and looking at your rejected draft, your proposed article would simply be highlighting innumerable phrases used by one artist and linking them to their original sources. I see that as a bad idea unless it is especially noteworthy in its own right. I'm sure large numbers of other writers have employed the exact same device in their own works. Of course, if you can cite independent, reliable sources with a high degree of academic rigour that demonstrate why this is notable in this particular instance, then you could add or enlarge a section on the page about Umberto Eco, giving a small number of example, plus a citation to allow readers to find more for themselves. Anything else would, as Noyster stated, be Original research, which we do not permit here. I would certainly avoid bloating any content with details like DOB/Date of Death/language/nationality of the donor artist. A simple wikilink should suffice.

And, whilst I've not checked for it, I very much doubt we have an article listing all the musical references to The Smiths deployed by BBC TV naturalist Chris Packham during his BBC Springwatch broadcasts in 2009, despite there being a reliable source to demonstrate that he did. All three topics are notable, but the linkage between them is not. Whilst I'm not saying that Eco's use isn't noteworthy - you would have to work hard to demonstrate clearly that it is to have a separate article about it. (But maybe I'm just being a bit of a cultural philistine here?) Unless it were very carefully constructed, I would not be surprised if a stand-alone page along the lines you're currently thinking of didn't then quickly appear at a deletion discussion on the grounds of notability and original research. That having been said, I think it could still be a very interesting piece of research to collate and to put online in a blog or discussion forum for others to find via a normal Google search, though not here). All "timeline-related" articles on Timeline of the war in Donbass

Hi all,
I have a question related to "timeline-related" pages on wikipedia, specifically Timeline of the war in Donbass. Many articles related to the mentioned page (such as this & this) are on Special:LongPages with page sizes ranging from at least 400-500kB, the most having about 550kB. Although User:Pigsonthewing split some articles into respective months, they still have a page size of about 200kB. My point is that it seems to violate WP:TOOMUCH & WP:NOTNEWS, shouldn't timelines be a summary of what happened instead of a detailed explanation? In addition, majority of the information is added by 2 users, namely User:Pietadè & User:DagosNavy. Not all might agree with me but I would suggest that the pages to be summarised & unnecessary portions to be removed. To add on, the timeline about World War II only have a maximum page size of ~74kB. ‑‑V.S.(C)(T) 08:18, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

As for me, You are welcome to summarise, and make much smaller articles (by the way, the current 'timelines' (not correct word for the war) falls into size limit), in some 80 or so years (e.g., if we take for start of the WWII JAP CHI "relations" in 1930s, then it makes some 80 yrs, give or take), to start new "counting"......
currently, people are killed, injured, displaced, in a daily basis, not only 1 (one) reader is interested in the subject (vedi page views)...
'cause, 1 (one) could consider titles like "War, Russian-Ukrainian, S01E01", et cetera...

Rejected article

I have written an article about Jasna Horvat which was reviewed, accepted and then removed. The user Scope creep left a comment "Fairly low H-index for subject asserting WP:NPROF. Needs proper examination by review". I'd very much like some help to put the article up again. H-index The person does not seem notable currently, and many of your sources arent great either. (Does facebook seem like a reliable source?) It was pulled for that and being reviewed by a sock. In addition, the infobox is almost useless. WelpThatWorked (talk) 16:30, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

@Hidrogen: Hello, and thanks for your question. One of the less obvious things about Misplaced Pages is that writing a new article is one of the most difficult things, normally best tackled only by editors who have been making improvements to existing articles for a while. Misplaced Pages has a number of policies and guidelines about new articles, and the one that matters here is called "notability" - it determines whether a particular subject should have a dedicated Misplaced Pages article or not. There are guidelines for different types of subjects: for academics the relevant guideline can be found by following this link to WP:NPROF. Simply being a professor or having some books published is not enough - the article needs to show how the person meets the criteria listed there. And there need to be independent, reliable sources to verify those facts. Please read those 9 criteria carefully, and consider whether there are good sources to show she meets them. If so, write the article based on those sources. If not, the article should wait until she achieves greater notability. Hidrogen, I will add a template to the draft that allows you to resubmit it for review, but before you do so, I suggest that you ensure that it is fully supported by references to reliable sources. Generally wikis like enwiki are slow (WP:NORUSH), and "in the news" can be too soon to judge how relevant yet another malware will be in the future. OTOH, it's your decision, if you have reliable + relevant 3rd party sources (cf. WP:42) and want to create an article or stub, be bold. Maybe your article will be deleted, if folks disagree with your judgement call. And don't copy the Wikia (FANDOM) malware wiki MEMZ page verbatim. –84.46.53.231 (talk) 13:24, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

Weight in BLP

d:Q2709 and the biography of Sasha Grey state that her mass is 50kg, and that shaky info is imported by, e.g., c:Sasha Grey. There's no obvious reference and no qualifier (a wikidata "point in time" could make sense). Is this really as it should be in a BLP? It sounds stupid, but what happens if she eats more or less than usual until the end of 2018? MOS:CAPS in citation

Obituary

Some while ago I was instrumental in creating a page on Misplaced Pages (bibliography of my father,Wing Commander Douglas Rivers Bagnall). Today I wanted to add a reference, and I can't find how to get into Visual Editor. What am I doing wrong?

@GK1000: Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Only administrators can view deleted pages, as allowing everyone to would defeat the purpose of deletion. To be an administrator you need to build up over years an edit history that shows you understand Misplaced Pages policies and practices, and be approved by the community. 331dot (talk) 19:56, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

It also says, “To start a page called User:Paul G. Humber/sandbox, type in the box below.” Can you see why I thought the title was misunderstood? Why would I want to start a page called that? Since I am new to the system, I may have made an error of some kind.

The doctor who championed hand-washing was Hungarian doctor, Ignaz Semmelweis. Can you imagine the disappointment he may have felt in promoting good medical practice when experiencing rejection—maybe with words like yours, “Kindly have the decency to wait until your method becomes notable and someone other than yourself promotes it.” According to the Wiki article about him, you can see these words, “his ideas were rejected by the medical community.” Eventually, his views prevailed, but it is sad that women likely died due to the delay.

Are you a philosopher? Englishman Thomas Hobbes was, and his views were right in line with concerns I have. This 17th century philosopher, in his masterwork Leviathan, wrote, “Another general error is from the misinterpretation of the words eternal life, everlasting death, and the second death. For though we read plainly in Holy Scripture that God created Adam in an estate of living for ever, which was conditional, that is to say, if he disobeyed not His commandment; which was not essential to human nature, but consequent to the virtue of the tree of life, whereof he had liberty to eat, as long as he had not sinned; and that he was thrust out of Paradise after he had sinned, lest he should eat thereof, and live for ever; and that Christ's Passion is a discharge of sin to all that believe on Him, and by consequence, a restitution of eternal life to all the faithful, and to them only: yet the doctrine is now and hath been a long time far otherwise; namely, that every man hath eternity of life by nature, inasmuch as his soul is immortal” (p438).

By “otherwise,” he was referring to the prevalent then (and even now) view, but it seems he assumed that “everlasting” was/is a good rendering for the Greek aionios, but it is not. The Greek word means lasting and is durationally indeterminate (can refer to either temporal or eternal things). The English translation, thus, should be equivalent to the Greek, but it is not. Forever is not durationally flexible, but both aionios (Greek) and lasting (English) are. Both can accommodate durational variance—temporal or eternal. Hobbes used the word “conditional” above, in line with “conditional immortality.” I am not aware of any Bible that gets aionios (NT Greek) and olam (Hebrew OT) consistently right. I may be something like Semmelweis—discerning something that needs to change.

On p. 445, Hobbes affirmed, “But there be other places of the New Testament where an immortality seemeth to be directly attributed to the wicked. For it is evident that they shall all rise to judgement. And it is said besides, in many places, that they shall go into "everlasting fire, everlasting torments, everlasting punishments; and that the worm of conscience never dieth"; and all this is comprehended in the word everlasting death, which is ordinarily interpreted "everlasting life in torments": and yet I can find nowhere that any man shall live in torments everlastingly.”

Again, he was struggling with the mistranslation, everlasting. It is sad that translators have used everlasting rather than lasting. He may not have been aware that Jesus actually nullified the mistranslation in Lk 12:47-48 and Matt 10:28. There Jesus taught proportional punishment and eventual cessation-of-being for the wicked. The word often mistranslated “everlasting” (with durational inflexibility) means lasting.

He is not the only one to recognize this problem. There are others, like Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus of Lyon, Defender-of-the Faith Athanasius, Martin Luther, William Tyndale, William Gladstone, Richard Weymouth, Harriet Beecher Stowe, C. S. Lewis, Clark H. Pinnock, F. F. Bruce, John Stott, Philip Hughes, and many more.

Again, if you would be willing to shepherd me through this new (for me) process—how, for example, I should diminish CoI and include references to Hobbes, etc., I would appreciate it. I realize this might take some of your time. Could I pay for services? Jesus said that a laborer is worth of his hire.

Hello Paul G. Humber. A bot is an automatic program - a "robot": all bots (and only bots) should have user names ending with "bot". You can write about a subject if you can find reliably published sources that discuss that subject in some depth, and the you can summarise what those sources say. You should not include anything not found in your sources, and in particular you should not include any theory, argument, judgment, or conclusion which does not come directly from a single one of your sources (not even one that you reach by synthesising what two or more of the sources say). Welcome to the Teahouse, Pilot03, and seasons greetings. Had you provided a url to the page where the image sits, we might have been able to assist further. But unless there is an extremely clear licencing statement that the image is freely available for both non-commercial and commercial re-use, then you absolutely must not attempt to upload it for use in a Misplaced Pages article. Ignore the fact that Google doesn't tell you there's a problem. Be pro-active and look for a clear 'Creative Commons' licence statement. If there isn't one, the image cannot be used. Thanks for the url, Pilot03. No, I'm afraid you cannot use that image. Just click on Google's 'usage rights' filter link, and select 'Labeled for reuse'. Sandbox Questions

I made a little practice edit in My Sandbox, and in trying to save it to experiment with later, I clicked the Publish button, and, naturally it was deleted by User:KylieTastic (Thanks, again, Kylie!) So now my Sandbox User:DaKine/sandbox has this big ol' Template sitting on it. So my questions are: How do I get rid of the template (I'm NOT going to resubmit), create a sandbox I can try edits out on, and save the edits to work on after I log off Misplaced Pages and return later without publishing the changes? The way Misplaced Pages works is that everything is done by volunteers: you're perfectly at liberty to ask for something, but whether it happens or not depends on whether some volunteer editor decides to pick up your suggestion. Posting your request here is allowed, but there are other places where you are more likely to find somebody to pick it up. The general place to request articles is as Requested articles; but the truth is that the take-up rate there is quite low. Other possibilities are to find an appropriate Wikiproject and ask there; or to contact the editor who created those two articles, Angel Emfrbl, and see if they are interested (I have just pinged them, so they should see this discussion). Something you can usefully do, though, is look for reliable independent sources which talk about those vocaloids; because if there are not such sources yet, then no article is possible.

Welcome to the Teahouse, আ হ ম সাকিব. Yes there is a way to count editors' contributions. On any user's page, look for the 'User Contrubutions' link on the left hand side of the page. That gives you a list of all their most recent edits. Now look at the very bottom of that page, and you will see a set of links one of them labelled 'Edit Count'. Click that, and you will arrive at the tool which summarises that editor's Misplaced Pages contributions.

Anchitya. I'm sure IBT is a reliable source for some things. That article is a reliable source that Manohar claimed that it had taken Rs 35 crore in four days: it is not a reliable source for the claim itself. And the article does not even claim that The Villain took Rs 100 crore: just that one of the distributors predicted it would do so. It also says that "trade sources" have given different figures from those.

Unless you can find a solid, reliable source, wholly unconnected with the distributors or the film in any way, that categorically states that it took over 100 crore, then I advise you to drop the stick and turn your attention elsewhere. How to upload your own photograph to English Misplaced Pages

I uploaded a photo of Cynthia Nielsen (which I own) to Wikicommons and posted it on Cynthia Nielsen's page. It was deleted. I am new to Misplaced Pages and am not sure how to proceed. The photo was also used on Academia.edu, and since I own and took the picture myself, I thought it would be okay to use the same photo that had been posted there (https://udallas.academia.edu/CynthiaNielsen). It was a major brand in its time, remembered by many "of a certain age" and I don't see why it's any less "constructive" than anything else on the list (see below) some of which are a lot more obscure!

My question is: What is the definition of constructive? LP's publicity department has done an excellent job in convincing the magazines and purging information in other sources. You might like to know that her friend Alicia Godsberg was born in 1968 also. They started playing as Lionfish in 1995. It is not unusual for Misplaced Pages articles to show the age put out by a publicity machine. Dbfirs 09:30, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

Not sure where to go from draft

(edit conflict) @Riedener: Welcome to the Teahouse. If you revisit both drafts you will see a very obvious header message confirming they have both submitted. I fear both may be rejected initially as being rather essay-like and not containing any inline references. You may carry on working on them whilst theyre in the AFC queue. See WP:REFBEGIN for help on adding citations. You should remove the redlinked 'Main article' templates as these are not relevant, and consider the relationship between your draft and the current page on Embroidery machine. Dear გრინვეი. Because you are very new here, and have only made less than 10 edits, just follow the advice at WP:RENAME which states: "Users who have made very few edits are encouraged to register a new account and discard the old one." So, just abandon the old account and create a completely new one. Providing you don't subsequently revert to using the old one as well, this is perfectly ok, and makes far less work for our admins to do. We have thousands of abandoned acccounts here, and you could even leave a note on the old userpage that states the new name you're now using (and vice versa), if you wish. How does that sound? Are snapshots/screengrabs of Google search results allowed in articles?

Hi. Just now I created the page Pellet gun usage in Jammu and Kashmir. I want to add a screengrab of a blurb of an article from TIME magazine related to this topic that shows up in Google search results, currently right at the top. The point of the screengrab will be to show how the media reports on such a topic. This screengrab will be part of a larger prospective section on the page titled "Media reportage" with examples on how different terms are used when it comes to who actually uses pellet guns in Jammu and Kashmir. @Timtempleton: Thanks for the reply. The problem with this specific instance is the the blurb for the TIME article says something else, something misleading, which isn't mentioned in the main article itself. Why this becomes a more important example it that it is TIME magazine, and the blurb is first thing appearing when I type "Kashmir pellet guns". This is the article "Faces in the Darkness: The Victims of ’Non-Lethal’ Weapons in Kashmir"... the blurb on Google says - "India's army injured thousands with pellet guns." @DiplomatTesterMan: welcome to the Teahouse. What you are suggesting is a form of original research, which is not allowed. You'll need independent reliable sources discussing and analysing the media coverage - not instances of media coverage which you yourself analyse. In addition, a Google search is never a good source since what comes out on top is different for people in different parts of the world, and also depends on other searches you have made. So I'm afraid the answer is no, a Google search (whether it is a screengrab or a direct url to the search) is not a useful source. --bonadea contributions talk 15:51, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

Hello User:DiplomatTesterMan; I must comment that in common usage in different parts of the world, a "pellet gun" refers to an air-powered rifle or pistol. The article you have written seems to be about a type of Shotgun with very small type pelletized ammunition... similar to "birdshot" from your description. @Hamster Sandwich: My article is not about pellet guns or pellets in general (though I have mentioned briefly what it is on the page, according to sources, specifically relating to this issue being discussed). The article is about their "usage" in the specific region of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a big issue in the region, a national debate often, and has been internationalized due to the area being so called disputed between India and Pakistan. The coverage of this article is beyond the scope of being included within the shotgun article. There are more than enough reliable and notable sources to justify a standalone article in my opinion. I can add a small section if you want into the original shotgun article as you suggested. Maybe even into crowd control articles. I am also not placing this within original Kashmir conflict articles since they are already so large. I will again add a small section in the main articles once this is stabilized. To summarize my comment from above, the term "Pellet gun" itself might be considered to be a colloquialism in context of the broader usage of the term in general, and in particular where Misplaced Pages articles that cover the subjects Airguns, Pellet and similar. Perhaps something like "Crowd control in Jammu and Kashmir"? Or "Riot suppression in ..." although that seems a bit POV.
