Federline is noted for his marriage to American dance-pop superstar Britney Spears. They married on September 18, 2004. Federline previously dated actress Shar Jackson, with whom he has two children. Kevin and Shar's daughter, Kori, was born on July 31, 2002, and their son, Kaleb, was born on July 20, 2004. He has also fathered two children with Spears, Sean Preston (born on September 14, 2005) and Jayden James (born on September 12, 2006).

Federline courted Spears while Shar Jackson was pregnant with his child. This prompted Shar Jackson to comment that, "it wasn't like just breaking up a relationship. It was like breaking up a family."

On November 7, 2006, Spears filed for a divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Federline was in Toronto at the time promoting his new album for the Canadian music station MuchMusic, and it has been widely-speculated that he received the news via text message the night before. The moment that Kevin received the text message was caught on camera. The Associated Press reported that a day after Spears filed divorce papers, Kevin Federline counter-filed court papers seeking spousal support and sole custody of the couple’s two children.
