Advance and Follow is the first studio album by the alternative electronic band VNV Nation, released in 1995. Compared to the futurepop sound of their subsequent albums Advance and Follow has a middle era EBM sound with classical influences. In 2001 the album was re-released with updated production and redone vocals along with five bonus tracks.

Samples

Anthem contains a collage of samples from WW2 Radio Broadcasts and recordings. These included

BBC's Richard Dimbleby's harrowing recorded impressions from when he visited the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp:

"Over an acre of ground lay dead and dying people."

Also a sample of Italian fascist propaganda mottos:

"Tempi migliori!" (Better times ahead!)

A sentence from British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's September 3, 1939 declaration of war against Germany broadcast by BBC:

"this country is at war"

Excerpts from Winston Churchill's VE day speeches.

After Fire has samples taken from the movie Universal Soldier:

"Move in and secure the objective."
"It's the only way to win this fucking war."
"I'm gonna teach you the chain of command private!"
"They just killed another hostage."
"I'm giving the orders from now on."
"We have a mission to complete."
"Say goodnight, asshole."
"I think we should shoot her, in the head!"
"Got you now, boy."
"I'm looking for a deserter!"
"Your dead soldier.","No...I'm alive"
"Stop it! Your gonna kill him!"

From the movie Reservoir Dogs:

"Put the gun down!"

And from the 1956 science fiction film Forbidden Planet:

"How soon will radar be operational?"
"Operating right now, sir."
"Good. Keep on it yourself."
"Aye, aye, sir."
"The M.A. alert is completed?"
"Aye, aye, sir."
"Fine. Activate-" (cut off, the full line is "activate main batteries")

Requiem QCN also features samples from Forbidden Planet:

"Shall I shut down the current, sir?"
"No. It's stopped now. Check over the whole system in the morning."
"Aye, sir."

Outremer also features samples from Universal Soldier:

"You must follow orders at all times."
"Cease fire, cease fire!"
"Begin phase two."
