Hello. In re information foraging, could you hihglight the title phrase at its first appearance? That is customary here. (I've made the correction in that particular article.) Michael Hardy 19:50, 9 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Hi Paranoid, I have some answers to your questions on my talk page. Cheers, Kosebamse 14:59, 12 Oct 2003 (UTC)

It's not clear to me whether User:Cyan/Internet child pornography will be permitted to exist in the article namespace. If it is not, you may certainly keep a copy (or even the original , see Misplaced Pages:How to rename (move) a page) at User:Paranoid/Internet child pornography. I tell you this because, although I have serious misgivings about the content of the article, neither do I want to discourage you from contributing to Misplaced Pages. Cheers, Cyan 21:22, 13 Oct 2003 (UTC)

I have moved the article to User:Paranoid/Internet child pornography. -- Cyan 22:45, 28 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Hi Paranoid.

I disaggree with some of the changes you made to the Moscow page. You removed: "Moscow presents many obstacles to the foreign tourist. The visa system is antiquated and costly. Hotels are too few and too expensive. Also, with the recent terrorist actions being associated with the darker-skinned Caucasian population, official police racism against all dark skin people is rife."

On racism, i think it does apply to tourists. Severly of my french and spanish friends have been harrased by the police in moscow because of their slightly darker complection. Anyone with black skin is taking their lives in their hands by visiting the city. 35 Africans were burned to death last november when their appartment block was set alight. The police announced it to be an accident before they arrived on the scene (even though they had been called to the building the night before by residents who had chased away an arsonist). Asian visitors (including many of the cities bankers from Japan) are currently advised by their embassies not to use the metro for safty reasons.

There is a great shortage of hotels. I have connections with the business community in Moscow. They tell me that if they haven't booked a room for visiting client at least 2 months before all the rooms will be gone. And noone who has ever tried to get a visa will disaggree that the system is awful.

Logarithmic timeline of current events

Hi, Paranoid,

I just updated the Logarithmic timeline of current events with a number of events, and I'd like you to take a look at it. I'm sure I didn't do an excellent job, but perhaps you'll find something better than the California recall election for that time slot. -- ke4roh 00:29, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

EasyTimeline

Paranoid, colons in text are possible by putting text between double quotes. I made some adjustments to image size and vertical position of texts to avoid overlaps, of course just suggestions. Repeating options can be specified once, if the line contains no actual event (at, from or till) these values will become new defaults, if combined with an event they effect that event only (overrule the default). So nothing wrong with what you did, but it is a bit more concise now. Let me know if you have any other questions, feedback. Cheers, Erik Zachte 00:25, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Oops I did not look well enough, text before the colon is now missing. I'll soon upload a new version of ET, will check this bug first. Erik Zachte 00:40, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Bug fixed. Cheers, Erik Zachte 23:06, 26 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Inquiry re: Your photo of Japanese Imperial Palace garden

Hello Paranoid, I've done some Photoshopping of your picture,

Your original shot of Japanese Imperial Palace

but I don't want to upload it unless you agree. Mostly, I opened the shadows and lightened the photo. Increased the saturation. Sharpened the building a bit.

I also don't quite know how to give you credit for it.

Please let me know if you'd like to see it.

Fg2 11:58, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

If your new version looks better, please upload it (I'll see it when you do it). I don't mind at all. Crediting me is not really necessary, thanks. :) Paranoid 12:28, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Some luck...

It didn't replace the original image. Tried again, with the extension .jpe (as your original) rather than .jpg (as the image file title) and it went to

File:Japanese Imperial Palace garden2.jpe
The edited image

where you can see it.

I guess I'm getting sleepy. Maybe try again tomorrow.

Anyhow, see if you like it. Fg2 13:09, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

It still isn't perfect, since the source is the scan of a print made with a cheap camera. I would probably suggest using selective brightening (or whatever it is called) when you only increase the brightness of the darkest (shadow) parts. Paranoid 13:18, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Let me get this right -- you will quit reverting the Hussein article, if I find a source which discusses confusion over Hussein's name? Lirath Q. Pynnor

First, sorry for the unnecessary revert. It seems that the compromise version appeared after I started the edit and I overwrote it. But the comment I left still stands. I think we will make some progress in the debate over the name if you can give a reference that supports your position that calling Saddam Saddam is bad. Even though I probably don't care as much as some other participants, I would still like the edit war to stop. And if you can give such reference, it would be enough of a justification for most to have a notice about the name (though it appears that currently there is one) or even refer to Saddam as Saddam Hussein (if your reference would be particularly strong). As the goal of Misplaced Pages is to reach factual consensus (about what constitutes a fact, not what we think about it), I think that providing a source would help (as the opinion of a single user isn't worth much by itself). Cell Phones in aircraft

I know quite well that the FCC has no authority outside the U.S., which is why I explicitly mentioned "and other regulatory bodies". The section still is in partial conflict with the preceding paragraph.

I'll change it, OK. But currently it serves as an introduction to the paragraph about proprietary commercial phone systems on board. Paranoid 08:20, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

P.S. Care to help me clean up the rather messy (and IMHO, amateurish) edits Mozzerati just made?

I'll look into that. Paranoid 08:20, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Sorry about that. The article needed a lot of work and some restructuring, but I should've been using a sandbox. Please feel free to ask me to explain any of my changes and help you compare all the versions. Thanks for the advice, 172 19:08, 9 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Brain imaging

Hello,
Thought you may want to know that I have posted Brain imaging on Template:Opentask. (No longer a stand-by.)
I have also posted it at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Clinical medicine under 'Clean up'. Hope this helps.
Cheers !

I split off history of brain imaging from "brain imaging," leaving a short summary at the orginal article. I considered your suggestion of splitting off the implications section and practical applications sections into new articles, but eventually decided they fit best in the context of the history and possible future of the field. The "brain imaging" article reads much better now - thanks for your suggestions on how to split it up. Sayeth 16:46, Aug 19, 2004 (UTC)

Hey is there a lot of free speech in communist countries?

There is some. Not a lot, and especially not when it's related to the political system. Some things are just accepted as they are. In the USA it is accepted that blacks are as good as whites - this is not open for discussion. In Cuba it is accepted that planned economy and socialism/communism are the way to go - similarly not open for discussion. Other than that, there are freedom of speech and other freedoms. Vagina article

Paranoid, I reverted yr edits on purpose. Your edits seemed to be focussed on sexual information relating to the vagina which was mostly trivial. Women in asia or wherever performing tricks with their vaginas is not pertinent information to a general article on the vagina. Same goes for the rest of yr edits. I have no problem with this information being presented somewhere on wikipedia in a relevant context but I don't think it worthy of inclusion in this article. Oska 23:53, Aug 11, 2004 (UTC)

Doom 3

I posted a revision to your argument that the reception to Doom 3 was below expections. It appears you posted a revision to it at the same time. Now, it is all out of sequence, but I think you'll agree with my comments so I decided to leave them.

Also - kudos on the overall edits to the page. It is much better now. Kainaw 14:05, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Child Sexual Abuse

All your edits are tendentious in favour of pedophiles. "Child sexual abuse denotes sexual activities with children that are perpetrated against an individual without consent" is plainly wrong, "consent" is not possible.

Consent is possible. For example, a 15 year old can give informed consent in many countries. In other counties a 13 year old can give consent to a 17 year old. In yet other countries the law recognises that even a small child can give consent, but simply ignores this. Even American law recognises that children can give "simple consent" even though they can't give informed consent. You were mistaken when you said it's impossible.

With "The research has suffered from lack of common methodology, unclear definitions, use of questionable techniques for retrospective studies, such as memory recovery (see false memories), bias, unjustified presumptions and other factors." you focus on critique of research that is usually dangerous for pedophiles,

I focus on critique because the research was criticised to some extent by many (may be even most) researchers. The problems (listed above) are noted by any survey of existing literature that I read.

"Child sexual abuse is regarded as particularly reprehensible in many modern societies, however, the ambiguity of the definition and the intensity of fear and reprehension prompted some critics to argue that in some respects this is a result of mass hysteria and not rational view towards specific problems." is panic of abusers. Get-back-world-respect 13:35, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Well, you wouldn't say that the reaction towards presumably ritual child abuses in day care was normal, would you? Even such respectful authors as Finkelhor spread the rumours because they didn't treat the findings with proper scientific scepticism and because they all too often made ridiculous assumptions on which they based their conclusions. I am not denying that certain activities that are usually understood under CSA happen and are harmful, but being scared of "Child sexual abuse" per se is silly, because it's such a vague concept.

P.S. Perhaps we can continue the discussion at the article talk page, so that others can see it and contribute. If you agree, feel free to move this text there. Paranoid 13:53, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

random walk

Paranoid hi. I looked at your edits of random walk and I'm not sure the stuff belongs there. It's way larger than all the others — they could be expanded, of course, but then they would cover most of the article which would have to be renamed "applications of random walk"... In short, wouldn't it be better to put this text as a section in some article on finance or financial mathematics (or make it into a page of its own) and put in the random walk page a synopsis and link? Gadykozma 01:57, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)

That's a valid remark, but I simply don't know where to put it. I spent some time thinking, but simply could not come with a good idea. Paranoid 07:52, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Check the links in Financial mathematics (obviously you know more about the subject than I do) if any one fits. If not, make it into a new page, called "Randomness of share prices" or somesuch. What do you say? Gadykozma 16:34, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Misplaced Pages's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to ] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}

OR

Option 2
I agree to ] all my contributions to any ], county, or city article as described below:
{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" with "{{MultiLicensePD}}". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Royal Society

I have added some research from a book that is somewhat POV. Please see Talk:Royal Society for more info. -- AllyUnion (talk) 18:31, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Feynman

Your rephrase from more concrete to less useful but more fun is a slight POV. Feynman's view, as a physicist, did not necessarily include utility as a criterion. It is true that he was a natural engineer, but that is not quite as desirable an attribute for being a physicist, who must also be creative about insights into Nature. That is what he felt burned-out about, and that is why he gave up trying to be the superman. So instead, he just turned his analytical ability to the nutating dish. Ancheta Wis 12:14, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

This is Feynman's POV. Of course, we have a problem of reliable sources here - Surely You Are Joking is not an academic research paper, but Feynman himself said "I'm going to play with physics, whenever I want to, without worrying about any importance whatsoever." and "There's no importance whatsoever. I'm just doing it for the fun of it." about his work on the nutating dish physics. Paranoid 12:21, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

JK Rowling

Actually, whether Rowling is writing "some deep work" or not is a matter of opinion. I happen to think she is and I would guess that you happen to think she is not. I happen to think the Matrix isn't particularly significant and it would appear that you do, which is also a matter of opinion. How about we change that sentence to say that the name could have come from a number of classical sources and link to a disambiguation page? I stand by my revert, the origins of names are important in that series and the name needs to be linked to some potential explanation to reflect that importance. They're not childrens books, you know! aec 14:07, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I'm open to suggestions. If you can find more people that agree with you, I'm not going to stop it. I didn't set that rule, but I kinda understand it. We have to draw the line to define a new article somewhere. Why not post a topic on the talk page and see what others think?

Please note that I'm not the "boss" of the section or anything. I merely didn't include it in my update because I like to stick with the existing rules. If you want to suggest a new policy, just go ahead. In the mean time, I'll see if I can do something to stretch the rules a bit. ] 19:02, Dec 13, 2004 (UTC)

Link Police

I'm surprised that you left only one link on the sex toys page. The the fact that it's crammed with advertising and lacks a good deal of the information found on the 'poorly written' site of mine that you removed suggests to me that the remaining site is your own.

However I'm going to look at re-writing some portions of my 'poorly written' site regardless. I think some of the knowledge it offers is fairly unique, and the site has been useful to many people over the years.

I think I accidentally make a mistake. I have mistaken your site for one of the others I removed earlier today. Your site is not poorly written, in fact, it's written rather well. So I am sorry for the comment in the edit summary. I still think that there shouldn't be more than one external link here, since they offer a lot of duplicate information, but I am not going to argue that the one included now is much better than your site. BTW, I am in no way connected to that site, as a matter of fact, I (shame on me) have never actually used a sex toy, much less sell one. :( It is still against Misplaced Pages policy to include self-promotion and commercial links, so I do not think your site should be linked, but feel free to discuss it with others on Talk:Sex toy. Paranoid 19:50, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for saying it's not poorly written. I think there is room for both sites to be there, or maybe just a link to the DMOZ, Yahoo or Wikimoz category that both sites are in would be best? I simply feel that our site covers a range of items that the other doesn't touch on, and those are the types of questions I answer most when I'm contacted by the curious.Having one link is fine, and reduces clutter, but the heading is external links in the plural, and I've already helped a few Wiki surfers with advice, so I think my link had merit. Still I guess it's a community, and if my link is pushed out by 'natural selection', there isn't much I can do about it :) Looking at it, I guess it must not have been your site, or you would have left your other 2 sites in there also, which is obviously some kind of self promotion.

Heated Main Page Debate

I must admit that reading your reply to my comment raised my blood pressure a rather lot. Based on the other discussions you are carrying out on this page, I see that you are quite capable of carrying on a productive debate and probably didn't intend what you said on the talk page. I would be glad to respond to what you said if you take the time to calm down and rewrite it. Please do this so that we can reach a civil conclusion to the debate. Thanks, Qoph 01:11, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Soviet Union

Whether with a reply or whatever, just reply in the normal manner. It is not appropriate for you to edit my remarks with your own commentary, something a user of your seniority and experience knows full well. Libertas

This is a good point, but I don't know if making points like these are going to help calm down a user with such a simplistic good/evil view of the world. The page may be protected for months if this user is successful in turning the Soviet Union article into a political discussion forum. 172 20:16, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I freely admit that I don't really know what to do. I agree that a confronation is against WikiLove and is counterproductive, though. I am probably not the person to deal with new users like Libertas best. If you imply that some of my replies on talk were not helpful, I would probably agree. The best option for me probably would be to wait until someone else can calm down and "contain" Libertas and not interfere. :) Paranoid 20:49, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I have a suggestion: assist me in adding substance to the article that reflects the reality of the Soviet era. You don't need to "contain" me, I just want to add undisputed facts so it's a better article. And you can stop trolling my other entries too. Libertas
I was not "trolling", I was genuinely curious about your interests and editing style. Interestingly, your were quite eager to restore NPOV in several other articles, removing redundant, irrelevant and POV parts. I hope you don't mind me fixing a typo, though. :)
I would love to work together adding substance and developing the article (and Misplaced Pages in general), the problem is that from my point of view you were very clearly "brainwashed" by American propaganda. Don't take offence at the term, this is simply how it looks. You read a comment about US plans for Fallujah, then deny that it can have any merit based on the source, reiterate the official American party line that people of Iraq were saved from totalitarianism of Saddam and that the situation is improving. Meanwhile you ignore the factual descriptions in that article (it can be biased, but you are not saying the story was complately made up, are you?), which looks like the textbook definition of totalitarism.
Please try to understand my position. I feel (and I know some other users feel the same) that I provided a valid argument, but you dismiss it without bothering to respond to the gist of it. You don't say "this is not totalitarism because fact 1, fact 2, fact 3, while USSR was totalitarian because fact 4, fact 5, fact 6." You just repeat your claims. How can I argue with that?
If you have good imagination, please, perform a thought experiment. Actually you can just copy the text to notepad and perform it for real. Take my arguments, your replies and other comments and replace USSR with USA, USA with USSR, Stalin with Bush, Iraq with Afganistan, Fallujah with gulag, gulag with Fallujah. Reverse all arguments. Than stand on my position (after reversal of all terms you would appear to attack the USA, while I would be defending it). Consider the value of your arguments against the USA, arguments that it's a totalitarian state, etc. Just think about it, are they convincing? Are they logical and rational. Or are they just empty accusations? Because from my point it certainly looks like your claims about what USSR was are empty accusations.
I hope that you can try and understand my position better. Paranoid 00:32, 30 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I reject totally your assertion that Stalin is morally equivalent with Bush or any of your other bogus examples. I understand your position well enough, you read articles from Marxist websites and quote them approvingly. I know your view and viewpoint. I just don't agree. Nor does the sweep of history. It has embraced freedom, markets and capitalism.
The USSR stands condemned by history as a corrupt, sinister regime with the blood of many millions on it hands. The article on USSR is riddled with Soviet nostalgia and should be revised totally.
