The film opens with the Kaslan Corporation giving the audience a commercial on their new technology including the new Buddi 2 doll. Andy is present watching the commercial and is fascinated by the Buddi 2 capabilities, including being extremely life like. Later on, Andy is set to run errands for his mother Karen who is working late and gets Andy to make some new friends. Moments later, Andy walks into an alley where he is met with a gang of kids who start to pick on him for being the new kid. He meets Pugg and Omar, who are extremely nice to Andy and befriend him. One of the bullies, Ben, sees Andy looking at his girlfriend, Falyn and then beats up Andy as Pugg and Omar get Ben off of him. Later that night, Karen comes home and sees Andy with a swollen eye and tells Karen that he was running from a neighborhood dog and fell alongside a curb. The next morning, Detective Mike Norris comes to Karen's home to apologize for his sons friends behavior and gets Andy caught up with a lie about his swollen eye. Karen then talks to Andy about making new friends who should treat him the way he wants to be treated. So, Karen gives Andy a surprise so he won't have to deal with the bullies. Andy receives an older model of the original Buddi doll. With Andy not wanting the doll, the doll scans Andy's face so it can recognize him. Karen then takes him and locks him in a cupboard until Andy decides to play with it. Later on, Karen's boyfriend, Shane, has to help babysit Andy so he does not go out and get hurt again by the bigger kids. Andy decides to grab the Buddi doll and tries it out. Andy names the doll Han Solo but the doll refuses and keeps saying "Chucky". Andy then starts playing a board game with Chucky as Andy's cat scratches him. Chucky's eye then turns red and starts to attack the cat, strangling it. Andy walks back in the room and sees Chucky hurting the cat and grabs him. Shane walks in the room and cusses at Andy telling him to knock off the horseplay. Andy then starts to see Chucky having a malfunction problem as Chucky starts repeating his phrases. Karen later comes home and Andy lets her know that Chucky is broke. Karen calls Kaslan and they ship Chucky off in his box to the Kaslan Corporation where they remodel Chucky. After being remodelled, they ship the Buddi doll to a warehouse where they have to replace the hardware chips and a worker/sex-offender, Gabe replaces the chips inside Chucky but does not fully fix him. Chucky then gets up from the table and murders Gabe, impaling him in the testicles with a scalpel and burns him to death by raising the temperature in the all-metal room. The next day, Detective Norris investigates the warehouse to see Gabe burnt to a crisp and Chucky is nowhere to be found. Over at Andy's, the mail runs and Chucky is sent back to the home. Karen thinks it is weird for him to be returned in just a day but thinks nothing else about it. Detective Norris comes to Andy's and asks to speak to him. Norris finds a mailing address that sent him to the Barclay's home and tells Andy if he knows anything, he needs to tell him about Gabe's murder. Karen tells Norris to leave her home for accusing Andy of a murder he does not know about. Later on, Pugg, Omar and Falyn come to Andy's and sit and watch TV with him as they see Chucky and Omar starts to call him gay. Andy takes Chucky and throws him in the cupboard. That night, Chucky opens the cupboard and scares Andy as Chucky reveals himself to be alive. Chucky tells Andy that they are friends to the end and he will have his revenge with the people who treat Andy badly. Chucky tells Andy not to tell anyone about their conversation and then falls down as if his battery died. Shane then comes into Andy's room and fusses at him for making too much noise while he is having sex with Karen. He then picks up Chucky and throws him at Andy's bed. The morning arrives and Andy gets up and tells Karen that he got no rest over Chucky. He looks all over for Chucky and he is nowhere to be found. Andy runs down to Omar's and knocks on the door but nobody answers. Andy then just walks in and goes to Omar's room and grabs his phone to use the Find My Buddi locator on the Buddi app but an error occurs and runs back to his home. Karen then sees Andy all sweaty and red, Andy tells her that he has to find Chucky because of his sinister nature and Karen does not believe him. He goes to find Chucky on his bike. Later that night, Shane is at his home on a farm, hanging up Christmas lights on his home. Chucky runs around silently as Shane hears his dog barking at something suspicious. He shines his flashlight on the crops in front of his home and nothing is to be seen. Chucky then kicks the latter from Shane's feet as he falls down to the ground, breaking both his legs. He then crawls forward to his truck as he goes through the crops. Chucky cranks a lawnmower as it gets to Shane chopping up his legs. Chucky then forces a knife into Shane's skull, slicing his head in half. Andy is still riding his bike as Detective Norris picks him up saying it is dangerous riding a bike at this time at night. Norris takes Andy home as Karen has been worried sick about Andy and grounds him for running out late at night. Andy goes to his room and sees Chucky laying on his bed as his hands are covered in blood. Chucky tells Andy he will not have to worry about the new guy, Shane, as Andy is frightened. Andy then takes Chucky's battery pack out and throws him into his closet. The next day, Andy takes more time in his friends and leaves Chucky in the dust. Chucky then comes back to life without his battery and his eyes glow red as he repeats, "Kill Andy". Karen gets notified by Norris that Shane has been killed and that the murder leads back to Andy. Andy comes home and his mother and Norris wait patiently to talk to him. Omar, Pugg and Falyn all walk in as Andy tells them that there is something wrong with Chucky and he said he would do something bad to people that hurt Andy. Nobody believes him and Chucky overheard their conversation. That night, Chucky stares at Andy in a corner and slowly walks up to his bed, threatening to kill Andy as Chucky holds a knife to his throat. Andy cries and Chucky laughs as he says, "Goodnight, Andy". Karen then abruptly comes in Andy's room and sees Andy crying. Chucky is seen not active with a knife below Andy's stomach. Karen then believes that Andy is murderous and runs out his room to chase after his mother. He tells Karen about Chucky and begs her to believe him about Chucky. She takes Chucky and throws him away. The next day, Karen is getting ready to represent the Buddi 2 reveal at a local toy store as she sees Chucky sitting on the couch casually. She tells the doll that if its alive, Chucky needs to tell her. She then gets irritated and threatens to set Chucky on fire. Chucky then gets mad and starts to attack Karen, knocking her out and dragging her to the warehouse. Chucky then cybercalls Andy on his app over Find My Buddi and tells Andy that at the reveal of the Buddi 2, his army will rise and his mother will be dead. Omar, Pugg and Falyn witness the call and all four go to stop Chucky. Andy then warns Norris that Chucky is going to do something bad at the toy store during the Buddi 2 reveal. Norris then thinks twice and goes to the reveal with Andy, Omar, Pugg and Falyn. At the reveal, Chucky is seen on a monitor with a crowd of people watching as he says its time to play. Chucky then hacks into every Kaslan product including the Buddi dolls as they go on a rampage throughout the store, killing innocent people and employees. Andy and the kids start beating the dolls to smithereens as Norris shoots them with his pistol. Andy then goes to the warehouse alone to see that Karen is tied up about to be hung. As the rope rises, Andy grabs onto the rope and Chucky jumps on Andy trying to slit his throat. Andy and Karen fall down to the ground as Chucky falls on Andy trying to repeatedly stab at him. Norris then comes in and shoots Chucky in the head, blowing Chucky back. Andy and Karen gets up as Karen has a broken leg. Chucky then gets back up having a voice malfunction as Andy grabs his hand, throwing him over his shoulder and on the ground, scrambling Chucky into pieces. Andy, Karen and Norris walk out the warehouse as the film ends showing Chucky's body in bits and pieces. Child's Play is an upcoming American slasher film directed by Lars Klevberg and written by Tyler Burton Smith. It serves as a remake and reboot of the 1988 film of the same name, following a plot similar to the original film. It stars Aubrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman, Brian Tyree Henry, Tim Matheson, and Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky.

The film was officially announced in July 2018, a modern version of Child's Play that was in development at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer without the involvement of franchise creator Don Mancini or Brad Dourif. Lars Klevberg and writer Tyler Burton Smith signed on as director and screenwriter, respectively, alongside It producers Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg.

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 21, 2019, by Orion Pictures through the United Artists Releasing joint-venture, making it the first Child's Play film since the original 1988 film not to be produced or distributed by Universal Pictures.

Production

Development

In 2008, Don Mancini and David Kirschner spoke of a reboot of the franchise, which was originally going to be a "straightforward horror" written and directed by Mancini. Brad Dourif was expected return as the voice of Chucky. In a subsequent interview, Mancini described the remake as a darker and scarier retelling of the original film, but one that, while having new twists and turns, would not stray too far from the original concept. At a 2009 horror convention, Dourif confirmed his role in the remake. The film was canceled after the negative reception of similar remakes such as A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th.

On July 3, 2018, it was announced that a modern-day version of Child's Play, a reboot, was in development at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, with a different creative team than the original film series. Lars Klevberg signed on as director, with a script by Tyler Burton Smith (of Polaroid and Quantum Break fame, respectively). It and It: Chapter Two collaborative team Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg will serve as producers.

In December 2018, in a guest appearance on the Post Mortem with Mick Garris Podcast, series creator/writer/director Mancini criticized the remake, remarking that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, as rights holder for the original film, can do what they please with the property. When asked if he and fellow franchise producer Kirschner would have any involvement, he said:

We said no thank you, because we have our ongoing thriving business with Chucky. Obviously my feelings were hurt... And I did create the character and nurture the franchise for three decades. So when someone says, Oh yeah, we would love to have your name on the film... it was hard not to feel like I was being patronized. They just wanted our approval. Which I strenuously denied them.

Casting

The same month that the project was announced, Liv Tyler was revealed as having been considered for a role in the film. In September 2018, Aubrey Plaza, Brian Tyree Henry and Gabriel Bateman joined the cast. In November 2018, Ty Consiglio and Beatrice Kitsos joined the cast.

In March 2019, actor Mark Hamill announced that he joined the cast to voice Chucky in the film. Grahame-Smith elaborated on Hamill's casting in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying:

We asked, thinking there was no way it would ever happen, and he said, 'Yes.' He was the first choice, a big swing, and it just happened. I mean, first of all, to have an icon reimagining an iconic character is an incredible gift, and to have an actor and a voice performer who is as celebrated as Mark Hamill, and as gifted as he is, I mean it's incredible. He's taking on this challenge with a huge amount of energy and really come at it in a very serious way. And it's really something to watch him create a character, and sort of embody it, and I get to sit there and watch Mark Hamill record. It's just incredible.

Filming

Principal photography began on September 17 and wrapped on November 8, 2018, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Reshoots occurred on December 15-16 and in April 2019.

Visual effects

MastersFX, a visual effects company, took six weeks to prepare and assemble seven practical animatronic puppets, each with interchangeable arms and heads that performed a variety of required actions on set. With some help from Pixomondo, who will be providing the CGI for the film.

Music

On April 10, 2019, it was announced that Bear McCreary would be composing the score. In a statement, McCreary revealed that he was partially creating the film's music through a "toy orchestra" inspired by "Chucky’s toy-store origins" with toy pianos, hurdy gurdies, accordions, plastic guitars and otamatones.

Marketing

The first official image of Chucky was released on September 21, 2018. The teaser poster was released on November 12, 2018, revealing that for the film's adaptation the Good Guys dolls will be called Buddi, referencing the My Buddy doll that influenced the character's original design. A WiFi symbol over the "i" in "Buddi" teases the character's hi-tech functions in the film, being similar to robot toys, such as Furby and RoboSapien. Orion Pictures launched a marketing website for the fictional Kaslan Corp ahead of the film's release. The first trailer was released on February 8, 2019 to coincide with the release of The Prodigy.

The film's theatrical poster was released on April 17, 2019 and the second trailer on April 18, 2019. On April 30, 2019, a poster was revealed that parodies the teaser poster for Toy Story 4, featuring Chucky with a bloodied shoe, walking away from the remains of Sheriff Woody. This was followed by a second poster revealed on May 21, 2019, in which Chucky's hand is shown roasting the back half of Slinky Dog over a fire. Both films are slated for release on June 21, 2019.
