Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (lit. What is this relationship called?) is a Hindi-Language television drama airs on weekdays on Star Plus and streams on the digital platform Hotstar. It premiered on 12 January 2009 and is the fourth longest running Indian television soap opera. The show is produced by Rajan Shahi under the banner of Director's Kut Productions.
The show initially starred Hina Khan and Karan Mehra, and 2016 onward, after the death of the character of Hina Khan, featured Shivangi Joshi and Mohsin Khan in lead roles. In March 2019, its popularity led to the creation of a spin-off titled Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke starring Rhea Sharma and Shaheer Sheikh.
Summary
The story originally begins with Akshara Maheshwari's marriage arranged with Naitik Singhania in a large Marwari joint family based in Udaipur. They struggle to know each other and gradually begin to understand, support and love each other. Akshara and Naitik soon give birth to a son, Naksh. Unfortunately, Naitik falls into a coma due to an accident.
Parallel stories include Naitik's sisters - Nandini and Rashmi. Nandini gets married to Mohit Agarwal they adopted Yash and Nandini gives birth to their son, Anmol. Rashmi also gets married to Nikhil. Akshara's elder brother, Shaurya's love story with her best friend Varsha and they gets married.
4 Years Later
Naitik recovers from coma and has to struggle to bond with his young, mischievous son Naksh. He also has to face his mother Gayatri's death and after Gayatri’s death, Rashmi gives birth to a daughter whom she named-Gayatri(Gayu) after her mother’s name. After, Nikhil’s death Rashmi remarried to Sameer as Gayu accepted him as her father and Rajshekar's remarriage to a widow Devyani who has two children-Naman and Muskaan.
After two years, Akshara and Naitik have a daughter Naira. Naksh who loves his sister-Naira so much that he also bunk his school for her. Naman had married to Karishma who give birth to their daughter named Mishti. Naksh-Naira’s bond with Mishti and Gayu to be grew stronger. Then, the family decided to get Muskaan married to Alok Awasthi. Soon, Naitik's uncle Mahendra Pratap dies and his widow Kaveri blames Akshara for the same and banishing them. They along with their children move out of the continent.
10 years later
Naitik has relocated to South Africa and the family has been living in Cape Town since Kaveri blames Akshara for her husband’s death but later, Naksh returns to Udaipur and convinces his grandaunt Kaveri to forgive an innocent Akshara, and thus the family returns and reunites.

7 Years Later
Naira is living in an orphanage in Rishikesh and has grown up as headstrong but insecure and arrogant. She soon meets Kartik Goenka, a young and positive man and amidst their several fights begins and she also called Kartik a frog.
Akshara reaches Rishikesh to fund the orphanage and finds Naira there. She brings her back on the pretext of saving her orphanage. Naira begins to accept her family except Akshara. Kartik arrives in Udaipur as an employee of Naitik, and begins to stay with the Maheshwaris and also works for Naitik Singhania. He befriends Mishti calls her his BFF and Naitik has to go for his work but he made Naira promise till he return she will not go anywhere. Gayu realises that she loves Kartik and Kartik realises that he loves Naira. During Yash and Rose wedding, Naira introduces Chandu and Pungi to the family as her friends. Seeing, Chandu and Naira together Kartik grows jealous. After Naira’s dance in dance academy, she finally accepts Akshara as her mother and Police arrests Chandu for supplying drugs and he blames Naira for it. Naksh meets a con girl named Nisha(fake name-Riya) who pretends to be in trouble by some goons but actually wants to con Singhanias soon Akshara, Naira, Kartik and Naksh learns this and handed her to their police. Mishti helps Kartik to unites him with Naira during Ananya’s birthday.
Akshara, Kartik, Naira and Gayu four of them goes to Switzerland for Gayu’s exihibition but there they found Naitik who was kidnapped and Naman also tries to kill Naitik but Akshara, Kartik, Naira and Gayu saved him and handed Naman to Switzerland police. Later, Kartik confesses his love for her but she runs away. The four of them with Naitik fly to Udaipur and reveals to the Singhanias and Maheshwaris about Naman except Mishti and everyone disowns Naman and handed him to police.
Naira is confused about her love for Kartik but realises later that she also loves Kartik. But Rama tells her that Gayu also loves Kartik this Naira decided to sacrifice her love for Gayu and also shares this with Naitik and Akshara. Mishti tells to Gayu that Naira and Kartik loves each other and Naira also ready sacrifice her love for Gayu. Thus, Gayu sacrifices her love for Naira. Later, Naira says sorry and confesses her love for Kartik. Finally both shares a passionate hug. Now, Naira’s family wants to meet Kartik’s family but Kartik does not want him. Naira and Kartik shares some good times and also celebrated Akshara’s birthday. Unfortunately, Akshara is killed in a sudden car crash caused by Kartik's cousin Mansi for which Kartik is blamed. Singhanias and Maheshwaris disowns Kartik for a this but Naira realises it that Kartik is not at fault bails him and also says sorry to him for not believing in him. Thus, in series of events the families reconcile and during Kaira’s marriage, Aditya tries to molest Naira but fails and Naira notices him to mistreat Keerti and later, Kartik and Naira get married in a grand ceremony and after this Naksh surprises Naira of showing his gift for her.
Naira enters in Goenka Family as Kartik’s wife and done all post rituals after marriage. Kartik hates his father Manish and his step mother Suvarna as he remarried her after his mother's death and in fact believes he was responsible for the same. So, he considered Akhilesh and Survana as his father and mother and soon this confusion is soon cleared out by Naira and Kartik reunites with Manish and Survana. Naira also exposes Aditya who tortures Keerti and also tries to molest Naira this Goenkas throws him out. Naira soon learns that Mansi is the cause of Akshara’s death but with the heavy heart Naksh-Naira takes the case back and Goenkas apologies to Singhanias and Maheshwaris about this matter and soon families reconcile. Naira wants to fulfill her father’s dream of opening a dance academy so, practice the dance with her dance partner, Kiran seeing them dancing Kartik grews jealous. Naira’s friend, Raghav enters in her life this makes Kartik jealous as Naira’s secret reveals as she took the blame of her friend’s pregnancy with Raghav to be her’s and Kartik apologises to Naira. When Singhanias and Goenkas realises that Naksh and Keerti loves each other so they get them married. After marriage there are some misunderstandings that are created in Kaira relation but it get all cleared and So, Kaira celebrated their wedding anniversary. Thus, Kaira and Naksh-Keerti goes to their honeymoon in Greece where they met Shubam, Survana’s son when Kaira knows this they reveal it to Goenkas and the family disowns Survana but later accepts her due to Kaira’s several efforts. During Holi celebration Shubam fell in love with Suhana and Survana tells the family to the about Shubam and Suhana’s marriage but Kaira and Manish think the girl to be a con girl and later Kaira exposes Suhana, Savita and Rahul to the family and tell them they came with their fake names to con our family and handed them to police. Kabir, Naira’s obessesive fan who can go any extent to marry Naira and remove Kartik in Naira’s life but later he get exposed all the women of family handed him to the police. Unfortunately, Shubham dies due to overdose of drugs and everyone blames Naira for hiding his drug addiction. Naira leaves as Kartik do not trust her and Survana started to hate her. Thus, Kartik and Naira separated.
2 Years Later
Naira along with Naitik lives in Mumbai. Kartik is a professor now and Naira signs up for the same classes he teaches there. Suhasini(Dadi) get to know this wants to unite them but when Survana comes to know this she ask Kartik to come in Udaipur. Anmol and Mansi realises that they love each other. So, families decided not to bring Kaira’s past in Anmol and Mansi’s relation. Thus, Anmol and Mansi gets married and after their marriage Kaira gets divorced. After their divorce they both realises their mistakes that they love each other and finally wants to reunite and marry again but Survana wants Kartik to marry Ashi but Ashi loves someone else and finally Survana accepts her mistake when Naira reveals about having brain tumour. So, Kartik and Ashi’s wedding, Kartik swaps himself in the mandap with Ashi’s lover and get them married.
Singhanias and Goenkas both the families grew sad about Naira’s reports and before Naira’s surgery she proposes Kartik and they both get married. Naira soon undergoes a surgery for a brain clot and becomes successful and Kaira moves Goenkas house where Samarth makes an entry as new villain of Goenka Family due to some past misunderstandings and also manipulated Akhilesh but this got cleared just because of Kaira and he becomes a part of the family. Keerti and Naira are later both revealed to be pregnant but Naira loses her baby and Kartik swaps the babies of both. Goenkas and Singhanias are celebrating the happiness of Naira’s baby and Keerti wakes up from a coma cries for her baby but Naksh finds out about the baby swap done by Kartik and Naksh, Keerti and Naira disowns Kartik and Naira ultimately loses her memory. She shifts back to the Singhanias and befriends Sid (Kartik's fake identity) while resuming her dancing lessons. Naksh wants Naira to marry Rishabh and settle her new life and also trying his best to do so. Rishabh also likes Naira and they both also practice dance with each other. Her young cousins Mishti and Kuhu helps to make Naira realise that she loves Kartik. Thus, she tolds to the family about this and they started her marriage rituals with Kartik but due to Keerti he rejects to marry Naira thus making Naksh realise his mistake and this time Naira rejects him to marry him and during Holi celebration, finally Naira regains her memory and Kartik and Naira reunite.
Further, Samarth falls for a pregnant Gayu and after convincing their grandmother and after Vivaan's unfortunate death, they are finally decided to get married. During marriage rituals, Puru, Ila and Mansi makes the entry in Goenka house but gets scared to see Puru mama. Puru has his lusty intentions on Naira and also tries to molest her but Naira brings it to light the indecent behaviour of him against her and Mansi and he is thrown out. Thus finally Samarth and Gayu get married. Naira now enters the business after Manish's heartattack. Kartik feels insecure of Naira's busy routine and also becomes jealous of her colleague Mihir. Naira finds out she is pregnant and goes to tell Kartik but he questions her after witnessing her and Mihir come out of the same room to which Naira rebukes him and storms out of the Goenka house without informing him of her pregnancy. She then meets with an accident and is assumed dead.
5 Years Later
Naira and Kartik have again separated. Naira lives in Goa with their son Kairav, while Kartik has found solace in his nephew Vansh. A woman Vedika is also living in Goenkas house as her father took promise to Kartik to protect her. Goenka Family wants Kartik to marry Vedika. Meanwhile, Kairav mistakenly calls Kartik and addresses him as "Papa", frequently taking advice from him. Unaware and curious, Kartik agrees to go to Goa with Vedika for her exhibition only so he can meet Kairav and spends some quality time with him. Naira is distressed on seeing him while Kartik decides not to meet Kairav again and hurt his feelings, unaware that Naira is alive and Kairav is his son, and leaves. On hearing about Suhasini's heartattack, Naira decides to return Udaipur. Elsewhere the family prepares for Kartik and Vedika's engagement but it halts due to Kairav’s sickness.

Crossover
Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai has had several crossover episodes with various shows. In 2009, the show had a connection with Sapna Babul Ka...Bidaai. In 24 August 2012, the show had a crossover episode with Diya Aur Baati Hum. In 3 March 2016, Diya Aur Baati Hum's lead actress Deepika Singh as Sandhya made an entry.
Spin-off
Due to Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai's successful run since 10 years and its popularity, a spin-off series has been produced under the title - "Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke", which premiered on 18 March 2019. The series portrays the life of Naman and Karishma's daughter and Naira's younger step cousin Mishti, portrayed by Rhea Sharma. Besides, the show features actors like Kaveri Priyam, Shaheer Sheikh, Rupal Patel and Ritvik Arora in prominent roles.
Reception
The show is the fourth longest-running Indian television soap opera and is still one of the top rated show.
Hina Khan participated in the 'Power of 49' campaign, in which soap opera actors used their influence to urge women to vote.
Shoma Munshi said the show has "simplicity and highly emotional content" and was noted for placing female characters in the historical tradition of a large joint family.
Dubbed versions
The show was dubbed as Uravugal Thorarkadhai in Tamil on Star Vijay and as Pellante Noorella Panta in Telugu on Star Maa, both being discontinued after airing more than 1000 episodes.
The show was dubbed in Malayalam under the title Akkareyanente Maanasam 2 on Asianet Plus and also in Tamil as Uravugal Thodarkadhai 2 on Star Vijay Super starting from episode 2075, but were discontinued within few months.
The series airs internationally as Not Without My Family on Star Life.
