Suzuki Bokushi (鈴木牧之) was a Japanese essayist (author of zuihitsu) in the Edo period.

Biography

The Japanese zuihitsu writer known as Suzuki Bokushi was born on the 29th day of the first month in the 7th year of Meiwa (22 February 1770 in the Gregorian calendar).

In his youth, he was known by the infanthood name [ja] Yatarō (弥太郎), His true name in adulthood was Gisōji (儀三治), and his haigō [ja] was Shūgetsuan Bokushi (秋月庵牧之). The pen name Boku-shi was adopted upon his genpuku ceremony when he was in his sixteenth year, taking the first character (牧) of his father's haigō Boku-sui (牧水).
