Randy Shannon is the current head coach of the University of Miami Hurricanes football team. Shannon previously served as the team's defensive coordinator for six seasons from 2001 through 2006.
Early coaching career
Shannon was widely considered one of the top defensive coordinators in college football. Year in, year out, his defenses have been among the finest in college football. Shannon was the recipient of the Frank Broyles Award in 2001 (given annually to the best assistant coach in college football) for his work with Miami's record-setting defense that year.
Shannon's defenses are marked by aggressive, turnover-producing play, and are extremely difficult for opposing teams to pass against. In his five seasons as Miami's defensive coordinator, his defenses have led the nation in pass defense three times ('02, '03, '05), pass efficiency defense three times ('01, '03, '05), and scoring defense once ('01).

He is the 6th African American head coach in Division I-A NCAA football, the others being Karl Dorrell, (UCLA), Sylvester Croom (Miss. State), Tyrone Willingham (Washington), Ron Prince (KSU), and Turner Gill (Buffalo).
Personal
Shannon is a graduate of Norland High School in Miami, Florida and the University of Miami. He played college football for the Hurricanes in the mid-1980's and was a starting linebacker on their 1987 national championship squad. After graduating in 1989, he played in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys, becoming the first rookie to start at outside linebacker for the franchise since 1963.
