Picture of the day George Norman Barnard (December 23, 1819 – February 4, 1902) was an American photographer who was one of the first to use daguerreotype, the first commercially available form of photography, in the United States. A fire in 1853 destroyed the grain elevators in Oswego, New York, an event Barnard photographed. Historians consider these some of the first "news" photographs. Barnard also photographed Abraham Lincoln's 1861 inauguration. Barnard is best known for American Civil War era photos. He was the official army photographer for the Military Division of the Mississippi commanded by Union general William T. Sherman; his 1866 book, Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, showed the devastation of the war. This photograph, by Mathew Brady, shows Barnard c. 1865.Photograph credit: Mathew Brady; restored by Adam Cuerden Archive – More featured pictures... |

On a personal level
On a personal level Netsnipe, thank you for taking care of Izanbardprince and his vandalizing of articles and my personal page. It's nice to know that such behaviour is watched by those in power. God Bless. -- Imgi12 07:48, December 9, 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Sorry we overlapped on their talk page. Should someone file a SSP report on this IP range? I've never done that. Or maybe an RfC? Let me know what I can do. Thanks! -- weirdoactor -- 14:32, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- There's no actual sockpuppetry as yet. Just anonymous IP vandalism. Semi-protection will hopefully put a quick stop to that. -- Netsnipe ► 14:37, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

User:Jaydjenkins
Thanks for the heads-up. You don't find the editing patterns to be a bit, um, disturbing? Users who show up out of the blue and become heavy participants in a contentious AfD, showing good knowledge of Misplaced Pages guidelines (like notability), scream "shenanigans" to me, at least. (I'm not disputing the unblock; I'm a new admin and am looking for feedback.) | Mr. Darcy talk 15:04, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- There's a difference between single purpose account and sock puppets. You only block the latter if CheckUser proves it or they're being obviously disruptive. Don't forget that friends do ask their friends to help stack votes on Misplaced Pages, but sometimes those friends editing Misplaced Pages for the first time stay. If I were you, I wouldn't block any AFD sockpuppets on suspicion alone if they're not vandalising etc. Just use the {{Not a ballot}} and {{spa}} and the closing admin will ignore them. It's just not the risk biting potential newcomers. As for the AFD you're handling, you can blame that on the Gay Nigger Association of America trolls and their war on blogs -- just treat them as white noise. -- Netsnipe ► 15:15, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- OK, good to know. The other two accounts I blocked were clearly SPAs (and in hindsight, I should have identified them as such), so I'm comfortable with those. Thanks again. | Mr. Darcy talk 15:18, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
IP blocks.
Gotcha. I've restored the block at one week, leaving account creation open as well. The indef was inadvertent; I thought I had set it to a finite duration but obviously selected the wrong item in the pull-down menu. | Mr. Darcy talk 18:00, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- PS, if you think a shorter block is in order, go ahead. I was just looking for something long enough to discourage the editor in question from continuing his assault on Embraer-related articles. | Mr. Darcy talk 18:02, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
There was no point reblocking 89.241.144.42 (talk • contribs • WHOIS • RDNS • RBLs • block user • block log) at all. If you hadn't noticed from the edits to your talk page, he/she had already forced an IP change to 89.241.213.80 (talk • contribs • WHOIS • RDNS • RBLs • block user • block log). In these situations, semi-protection is much more useful than blocks. -- Netsnipe ► 18:12, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- Semi-protecting a half-dozen or more pages seemed like a bad idea to me; why deny other editors the chance to make legitimate edits? If the user in question starts his shenanigans again from the new IP address, I would temporarily block that one as well (would a few hours be more appropriate?) - but so far, s/he hasn't done so, but has been quite reasonable in discussing the matter. You can just respond here, BTW - no need to repost on my talk page. | Mr. Darcy talk 18:23, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
You've got a equally good point as well.I was thinking you might have resorted to a range block instead. If the user persists, bring it up at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. -- Netsnipe ► 18:28, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Admin help.
OK, I think I need to undo a bad page move (Czechoslovakia -> Republic of Czechoslovakia). There have been a few edits since then, but it will be easy to re-create them after the undo. What's the best procedure? Rollback the current article (RoC) then move it? I want to make sure I preserve page histories etc. Complicating it is that Czechoslovakia is now a dab page with its own small history. Thanks. | Mr. Darcy talk 23:30, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- Based on the tickings off and super-fast reverts I encountered from the editors of the dab page, I think it's fair to assume that they want the old state of affairs back. Most of the post-30 November edit history looks eminently discardable. I'd suggest just zapping Czechoslovakia, reverting the move, and rolling back the edits to the pre-move state. According me, the last pre-move versions are:
- But you might want to double-check that. Apologies for stating the bloody obvious (like Sybil Fawlty, I could compete in the Olympics at that). If Domino theory (talk • contribs) is unhappy, perhaps xe won't do this sort of thing again. Angus McLellan (Talk) 01:15, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
- OK, I took a whack at this last night, and started a new discussion at Talk:Czechoslovakia. I think we're all set, but if you notice I did something wrong, let me know. It appears that all the edit histories are where they belong. | Mr. Darcy talk 18:06, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

why has my page on wikipedia been deleted? (MaltaProducts.com)
a lot of companies have a history and ours is a website that promotes local culture. If the wording was not properly said, then I can reword.

Agim Çeku
Dear Netsnipe,
Greetings from Kosovo. I am writing to you with regards to Agim Çeku article, currently protected, and thus no edits are allowed. There seems to be a major error in the article, one that required immediate attention, I believe.
The website of the Kosovar Prime Minister states that Agim Çeku, the current PM, was born in the Qyshk village, Kosovo, on 28 October 1960. This information is available in the Albanian and the Serbian version of the website. However, in the English version a mistake seems to have been made, and his date of birth is presented as October 29, 1960. So, the odds are 2 to 1 that he was born on October 28, not October 29.
Our Misplaced Pages article however states that he was born on the 29 October, 1960, in Peja -- not Qyshk. Qyshk is a small village and the nearest town is Peja, hence I believe we should write something along the lines that Agim Çeku was born on October 28, 1960, in Qyshk, a village near Peja, Kosovo.
I will be contacting the PM's Office to get a confirmation of his DOB. However, since the material for PM's website is first prepared in Albanian and then translated to other languages, precedence must be given to the information in Albanian.
Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you. Kosovar 20:20, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Template:Hostname
I'd like to point out that in the few cases where I've used this template I've always used it with the intention to specifically indicate that an IP quite likely is not shared. E.g it belongs to a cable provider for private customers and may be presumed either static or semi-static, thus repeat vandalism doesn't need to be treated with kid gloves out of worry that it might be a school. So the {{SharedIP}} options wouldn't help. You've reverted yourself, but anyway, was it a simple error, or is there a backstory? Femto 13:19, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah. Overeager template clean-up = ). By the way, you may to actually link {{{1}}} somewhere. See SharedIP for what I've done with the "host=" option. Cheers. -- Netsnipe ► 13:26, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

I somehow missed the fact that Desmond Tutu was the real article and not "Desmond tutu". The article's been undeleted now. -- Netsnipe ► 15:36, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Chateau Bauduc
Hi Netsnipe.
Is the chateau bauduc entry now acceptable? I appreciate any help or assistance as there seem to be a lot or hoops to jump through!
Also added another Bauduc entry Felice Cerruti Bauduc this was deleted but I have recreated it. Can you confirm if this is infringing some guideline?
Chris Chris @ Optima 15:56, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- Château Bauduc is an acceptable start for a new article on Misplaced Pages and another editor has moved it back into the encyclopedia. It will need some polishing though since it reads a bit disjointedly and it needs some tidying up in the layout, but I can take care of that for you later (going to bed now). As for Felice Cerruti Bauduc, take a look at Misplaced Pages:Notability (people). That'll help you along the way, but it seems like most of the references online about him are in Italian rather than English so it might be a bit difficult to write a proper article without getting some sources translated. By the way, you don't need to include links to other Bauduc's in your articles. Just create a disambiguation page at Bauduc instead. Thanks for heeding my advice and again. welcome to Misplaced Pages. -- Netsnipe ► 16:07, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Hello, Netsnipe. I know you're busy (I see your name all over the place these days so I know you're always busy), but I was wondering if you could do me a favor. User:SkyBoxx created a mess and I've gone through it, reverting vandalism where I could. I have tagged 34 pages for deletion where he "awarded" clearly inappropriate barnstars, such as the Tireless Contributor Barnstar to editors who have only made two edits. Would you be willing to follow up and delete those pages before those editors log back in to Misplaced Pages? Most of them haven't contributed in weeks, but the sooner those pages are gone, the better. I would appreciate any assistance you could provide. Thank you. SWAdair 08:28, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

User:Izanbardprince
Hello again Netsnipe. User Izanbardprince is once again vandalizing the "Homosexuality" article. I just thought I'd bring this to your attention. Imgi12 09:38 13 December 2006
- I am not an administrator who will ban editors that you disagree with on demand. The last time I blocked Izanbardprince, it was because of vandalism to your user page. Read Misplaced Pages:Vandalism carefully for what constitutes vandalism on Misplaced Pages. This is clearly a Point of View dispute and I will not intervene. Please see Misplaced Pages:Resolving disputes instead. The only other times that I will intervene is if either side violates the Misplaced Pages:Three-revert rule or Misplaced Pages:Sock puppetry policies and in which case you can report it at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard. One more thing, new messages are to be placed at the bottom of another user's talk page page, not the top. -- Netsnipe ► 16:48, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
To Be Clear
So what you are saying is that a user with a past history of vandalizing pages he disagrees with, replacing NPOV statements with virulent communist diatribes, AS HE HAS DONE REPEATEDLY IN THE PAST 48 HOURS to the homosexuality article, is not worthy of your attention as an administrator? The term "Point of View" dispute and "Vandalism" are one and the same with this user! Give me a break! I would also like to point out that your condescending remark about you not being an admin who will block people I disagree with was just plain stupid! I never asked you to block anybody in my post. All I said was that a known vandalizer of articles was at it again and I was bringing the issue to your attention.
Imgi12 10:06 13 December 2006
- Apologies if I sounded condescending, but I've been badgered this way in the past by others and I'm awfully wary of it happening it again. Please report such incidents at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents and other independent administrators will review the situation. -- Netsnipe ► 17:13, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
Blocking my students
Dear Andrew,
Recently one of the Misplaced Pages adminstrators has blocked the user pages created by students enrolled in one of my classes (Com 435, Emerging Communication Technologies, Purdue University). He labeled them as "spam" pages because they included a link to my webpage. The link was present on those pages because I showed the students how to create a link on their user pages, using as an example a hyperlink to my webpage. This was meant to be a simple exercise and temporary. The administrator has interpreted this, however, to be the work of a spammer who has created a bunch of sock puppet accounts. I do not know what kind of evidence he used to conclude that, but when appealed, his decision was confirmed by you. In addition, my URL, matei dot org has been blacklisted. I think that your own research in the matter was at the very least superficial and your decision rash and uninformed. I demand that you unblock my students' accounts immediately and you take my page off the blacklisted list. All the student accounts are legit. The students want to be Misplaced Pages editors and you should give them a chance to learn how to use it. Your behavior cannot but turn people off from using and improving this site.
I appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
