Summary
Description |
A death march in Percha, Germany, during the Holocaust, of prisoners from the Dachau concentration camp, walking from the direction of Starnberg. See "Oral history interview with Benno Gantner". United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM).
Also see "Death march from Dachau". USHMM: "A view of the death march from Dachau passing through villages in the direction of Wolfratshausen. German civilians secretly photographed several death marches from the Dachau concentration camp as the prisoners moved slowly through the Bavarian towns of Gruenwald, Wolfratshausen, and Herbertshausen. Few civilians gave aid to the prisoners on the death marches. Germany, April 1945."
The photograph is one of a sequence taken on 28 April 1945 by Benno Gantner (born 1921) from his balcony. Prisoners had marched past the previous day too. The image was first made available to the public in or around 1947 in a display at Dachau, according to Gantner, by a Holocaust survivor to whom Gantner had given copies of the photographs. |
