The Sony α7R III (model ILCE-7RM3) is a full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera manufactured by Sony. It was announced on 25 October 2017 as the successor to the Sony α7R II launched two years prior. The camera shares many features with the α7R II, including the same 42.2 MP resolution sensor form the α7R II but with much updated hardware/software.

Improvements over α7R II

Several improvements were made compared to the α7R II, including the following:

  • Improved dynamic range due to lower noise in sensor readout
  • 425 contrast-detect autofocus points, up from 25 in the α7R II
  • Altered button layout reminiscent of the α9
  • Improved autofocus performance
  • Improved battery life due to larger battery
  • Dual SD card slots, compared to a single slot in the α7R II. However, the slots do not exactly match. One is an SD slot (UHS-I/II compliant), the other is a dual SD (UHS-I compliant) and Sony Memory Stick Duo slot.
  • Improved shutter mechanism to reduce shutter-induced shake
  • Pixel shift multi-shot mode that combines exposures taken on each subpixel of the Bayer filter, improving overall image quality

Major Issues (Across the α7-series)

  • Optical Filter Stack Coatings (White spec/spots on sensor)
  • Internal Weather Sealing (Improved on 4th body re-dezine)
  • Sony's Terrible Warranty and repair services (Cost/Logistics/Turnover)

Sony is first and foremost an imaging sensor manufacturer (70%* of the CMOS market share) and a consumer electronics maker however for years they have had many issues mainly there ''non-pro'' warranty and repair services that take 20-30days for both basic and advanced repairs leading many users to simply repair there own devices since from the A7II-present deconstruction and reconstruction is only 30-90min with standard tools thanks to the modular construction and ribbon cable design of the bodies and both 3.5mm ports are even more serviceable on 4th generation.

Most common repairs of sony mirrorless a7 are the following:

(Prices subject to geographic region and import fees and sellers priceing as of 2019-2020)

  • 3.5mm Headphone/Microphone Ports (10-20USD per unit)
  • Contact Pins (lens control/power pins) (14-20USD per unit)
  • Optical Filter Stack (UV/IR cut or colour filter) (40-100USD per unit) (not provided by sony)

  • Service Mecha Device (Sensor/Shutter/Core Body) (300-800USD model ependent)
  • Mechanical Shutter Unit Replacement (70-100USD model dependent)

Recommended cleaning practices and products as of 2020

Sony has coating issues on their optical filter stacks to the point that only non-methanol or very low methanol cleaning solutions are practical for sensor cleaning due to risk of damaging the coating this section has been added to help users and maintaining of the core operation of said product line due to lack of wide knowledge of said issues.

Minimal cleaning solution and pressure sould be used at all times in order not to damage the filter stack.

List of chemicals/tools for such cleaning.

  • Air blowers - (101 Brands here however one with a valve and filtered intake is recommended)
  • SCK-2 Gel Stick (Red Color) - Eyelead (Dry clean solution)
  • Wand Digital kit - Dust-Aid (Economic Swab Solution)
  • Pec Pads - Photographic Solutions (Lenses swabs etc)
  • Smear Away - VisibleDust (For shutter oil fingerprints & other residues)
