Tech News: 2020-23

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Recent changes

  • There is a new beta version of the Wikimedia Commons app for Android. It has a new zoom function when you look at images. It can also suggest places when you upload geotagged photos.

Problems

  • There was a problem with the Commons database on 27 May. Commons could not be edited for eight minutes. Because of this problem the database was moved. This caused another short read-only time on 29 May.
  • The Vector skin had a problem where you couldn't add links to the article in other languages. You couldn't see the section if there were no links to other languages already. It also removed content translation links and links to language settings. This has now been fixed.

Changes later this week

  • You can get a notification when someone links to a page you created. You can turn these notifications off for individual pages. You can soon turn them off also in the notifications you get.
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 June. It will be on non-Misplaced Pages wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 June. It will be on all wikis from 4 June (calendar).

List of Unicode characters - some errors in this doc:

hi:

I am working with some C++ programming with char recognition where i am using List of Unicode characters.
I have found some errors?? on this page - and made a correction yesterday. U+0250 was placed in <Latin Extended-B>
between C+249 and C+24A - someone must have countrd decimal instate af hex. a very nice gay gave me an answer
'The edit you made to the Unicode article was valid (u+250 didn't belong in that block), and you correctly used the edit note to say what you had done. But you failed to give the most critical information: why did you do it. If you delete anything, or make an edit that causes information to be lost, you need to use the edit note to give your reason. '
why! the reason was clear - an error in the table - sorry!
i have found 3 more small errors on de page - so if somebody will correct them the right way?
Please help me with... List of Unicode characters

1: U+1E02 is start af table -- U+1E00 & U+E101 is missing - are in Latin Extended Additional (Unicode block)

2: African scripts: Ottoman Siyaq Numbers (Unicode block '0x1ED00 - 0x1ED4F') point to same codepage

 as
 Semitic languages:
Arabic script in Unicode, including the Persian alphabet, Jawi alphabet and others
Ottoman Siyaq Numbers (1ED00–1ED4F, 61 characters) --- codepage says it belong to <arabic script>
I think there was only one definition / owner /

3: IPA Extensions:

    - U+0250 ɐ 586 Latin Small Letter Turned A --- is decimal value for U+249
+ U+0250 ɐ	592 Latin Small Letter Turned A --- must bee the correct decimal value
this I think is a follow-up of my correction - 'John Maynard Friedman' forgot to correct the decimal count
when he moved C+0250 to the IPA block (where it allready was)

Tech News: 2020-24

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Recent changes

  • Some articles have tables that can be sorted in different ways. For example a list of countries can be sorted alphabetically but you can click on the size column to sort them by size. If you clicked on the column a second time it would sort the countries from the bottom to the top instead. A third click will now take you back to the original sorting.
  • Self-closed tags now work as in the HTML5 specifications. This means you should stop using some of them. <b/> is an example of a self-closed tag that won't work. area, base, br, col, embed, hr, img, input, keygen, link, meta, param, source, track, wbr can be self-closed. Pages with tags that should not be self-closed have been listed in a tracking category since 2016. They will be listed in Special:LintErrors/self-closed-tag. This doesn't affect <references /> or <ref />.
  • There is a banner called WikidataPageBanner. It is for example used by the Wikivoyages, Wikimedia Russia and the Catalan, Basque, Galician and Turkish Wikipedias. It will now been seen by mobile visitors too. Before this it was only seen on desktop. The wikis should update instructions on MediaWiki:Sitenotice so that editors know to test and style for mobile too.

Changes later this week

  • Advanced item You can now edit MassMessage descriptions through the API. This is useful for tools and gadgets.
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 June. It will be on non-Misplaced Pages wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 June. It will be on all wikis from 11 June (calendar).

Future changes

  • A temporary fix helped wikis make their main pages more mobile friendly. This was in 2012. It has not been recommended since 2017. It will not work after 13 July. Wikis should use TemplateStyles instead. 118 wikis need to fix this. You can read more and see if your wiki is affected.

Category:Towns in New South Wales

I notice you are removing this from many categories saying it is not relevant but I do not understand why it is not relevant. Just to pick on one of them e.g. Category:Macksville, New South Wales, why is it not a Town in New South Wales? The article says it is a town in NSW, the NSW Geographic Place Names website says it is a town in NSW. Why is this not a relevant category? Kerry (talk) 21:05, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Kerry Raymond:, this was in relation to a message posted on Category talk:Towns in New South Wales in relation that the sub-cetegories are not the town articles themselves, but however contains locations with the town, therefore should not have the Category:Towns in New South Wales within them as they do not describe the town itself and it just creates a mess of sub-categories on the main category page which may confuse readers. Now I have going though all the sub-cats and removed the root cat, the root cat contains links to the town articles only. Pinging @Dave Rave: for context - Rich 21:10, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
and now all the subcats you have removed leaving the towns still there, which are already in the subcats in the heading area. Dave Rave (talk) 22:46, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
the category of Macksville is for the things in Macksville, it already contains the town of Macksville, this is a town in NSW. it is already in the cat of Mid North Coast, you need to make a new one for Towns in the Mid North Ocoast. the post office is not a town in nsw, it is a thing in a category. Dave Rave (talk) 11:02, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
@Dave Rave: I'm afraid I could not quite grasp what point Dave Rave was saying on that Talk page. Here in Australia, we have both towns and localities and they are not either/or. Towns are urban areas, while localities relate to the complete subdivision of Australia into bounded areas called localities (or suburbs in urban areas). So somewhere like Macksville is the name of both a town and the locality the town is within (a very common scenario). It is not normal practice to create separate Misplaced Pages articles for the town and for the locality, both the town and its surrounds are discussed in a single article. That is why some categories for NSW places will have Towns in New South Wales as a parent category and others do not (as they are localities without a town). I really think this is quite an important distinction and I suggest that it is discussed at the Misplaced Pages:Australian Wikipedians' notice board as this is a convention used throughout Australia. Not all articles are entirely clear if they are discussing towns or localities or both (it would be better if they did, but not all are written as carefully as we might like). Just to be clear, there are localities without towns (if these have a category, then it is the parent category of the local government area), localities with a small town fully contained within them (if these have a category, then the parent category is the local government area and Towns in StateName), and larger towns which spread over multiple localities/suburbs where the town has its town article in addition to the articles for the localities/suburbs it spans over (if the town article has a category, it will have parent cats for the LGA and Towns in State Name, while is the locality/suburbs have categories, then their parent category will often be Suburbs of TownName, which in turn usually has a parent category of the LGA, but will sometimes just be directly into the LGA category without a "Suburbs of" category (although I would expect sooner or later the "Suburbs of" tends to get created). So there is a fairly high level of consistency in this approach which is being changed here without a lot of discussion. I really think this is a discussion to be had there to gather consensus among the Australian community and then then take it to Categories for Discussion noticeboard before making any mass changes. Kerry (talk) 21:46, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
as I noted, in many more words than I usually do, every town is already an item in a cat of the towns, these aren't town cats I'm talking about, theyre things in the town. Dave Rave (talk) 22:43, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
Could we please shift this conversation to Misplaced Pages:Australian Wikipedians' notice board. @Dave Rave: I'm still struggling with the point you are making (not a issue of agree/disagree just not clear what you are trying to achieve and why). Could you give a concrete example of what we currently have and what you think it should be and why? And perhaps a counter-example of what we currently have and should stay that way? Thanks Kerry (talk) 23:12, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes

  • Advanced item Toolforge hosts several tools created by the Wikimedia community like edit counters or enhanced editors. It is changing the domain from tools.wmflabs.org to toolforge.org. The routing scheme is moving from tools.wmflabs.org/toolname to toolname.toolforge.org. You can read the details. Tools that use OAuth will have to be updated to keep working. You can ask for help.

Problems

  • There is a Wikidata item link in the sidebar on many pages. This disappeared for a couple of days for users who have the Monobook skin. This was because of a bug. It has now been fixed.
  • Editing, logging in and logging out didn't work properly for a short period of time last week. It was soon fixed.

Changes later this week

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 June. It will be on non-Misplaced Pages wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 June. It will be on all wikis from 18 June (calendar).

Future changes

  • Advanced item Pywikibot is a Python library to automate work on wikis. It will not support Python 2 after the new version in July. Support for Python 3.4 and MediaWiki below 1.19 will also be dropped. You should migrate to Python 3. You can ask for help.
  • The selectors .menu and .vectorMenu will no longer work in the Vector skin. This can affect gadgets and user scripts. .menu should be replaced by ul. .vectorMenu should be replaced by .vector-menu.
