Cache is from the French verb cacher meaning "to press, to hide".
These meanings are derived, directly or indirectly, from the French word. These are ordered in chronological order of when they were first used:
- A treasure trove, a valuable cache which has been lost, or left unclaimed by the owner. In this context, a cache is a place where items are stored (for example food, in case of emergency). Caches are sometimes concealed to keep their location and contents hidden.
- Cache refers to the computer memory that is faster to access than main memory.
- Shortened form of geocache, part of the activity of geocaching.
