Mexican gov info

I was poking around on the SMN site looking at Lanes radar images and stumbled across this: http://www.covecyt.gob.mx/descargas/memorias/Inundaciones/INDICE.HTML It seems to have a TON of potentially useful stuff. This file seems to have info on Pre-Columbian hurricanes (Maya?). All very interesting... I also noticed a Stan impact pic.--Nilfanion (talk) 00:16, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

Re: Keith

I think I got just what you need. Here's the currency converter I use. Hope that helps :) Hurricanehink (talk) 03:09, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

By the way, nice addition. The article was really lacking in Mexico impact. Hurricanehink (talk) 03:15, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
Sweet. Yea, add it all in! Later, we can summarize it (like if similar effects are felt), but as long as it isn't duplicated your additions will be very welcome. :D Hurricanehink (talk) 03:27, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
Great job. The only problem I see is the indirect damage. What's that? Also, stupid ignorant people that think Mexico is in Central America ;) What was IH thinking? Hurricanehink (talk) 14:03, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Misplaced Pages there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Misplaced Pages:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Re: Small announcement

We will certainly miss you on the Council, Tito! Thanks for making the time I've gotten to work with you on it awesome, and I look forward to still seeing you around Esperanza and Misplaced Pages. All the best -- Natalya 04:28, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

I'll certainly second that. I'm sure we'll see you around quite a bit, and feel free to drop us a hint/scream at us if you see anything we could be doing better. Cheers, EWS23 (Leave me a message!) 05:02, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Tropical Storm Helene (2000) copyedit

Hink told me that I should contact you for a copyedit of the Helene article if I wanted it sent to GAnom. I hope you can copyedit to make it a GA. Thanx. íslenskur fellibylur #12 (samtal) 17:19, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Regarding this edit/TS review

Titoxd, regarding this, I was wondering if you speak Spanish, as there is a pattern, which continues today. I've been trying to get this editor to discuss changes (even translating for him) and use edit summaries for a while: in case you don't speak Spanish, I wish we could find an admin who does. On a separate matter, you commented long ago on the peer review for Tourette syndrome; can you have a fresh look at the article whenever you have time (no hurry whatsoever)? Sandy 22:39, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

I'll add that article to my list to look at later today. No, I'm not worried about a warning for anything he's said to me - it doesn't really trouble me personally - I was just concerned that someone who speaks Spanish was aware of the tone. Back to you later on Katrina. Sandy 12:27, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Meteorological history of Hurricane Katrina

  • Should the lead have some mention of the devastation? Not sure how you feel about inline citations in the lead, but you might want to cite this in the lead: however, the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico allowed it to rapidly intensify to the sixth strongest Atlantic hurricane in history.
  • Those conditions did not fulfill the criteria for keeping the same name and identity. Change to: The criteria for keeping the same name and identity were not met. (More active voice vs. passive? A style choice for me, not important.)
  • Contradiction in the lead: The next day, the tropical depression strengthened to a tropical storm, receiving the name Katrina, and made landfall on southern Florida as a minimal hurricane. This implies it made landfall on the 24th, but the text says the 25th ?
  • The initial NHC forecasts - this is the first mention in the text of the initials, NHC. The reader can guess that it stands for National Hurricane Center, but that should be mentioned and or linked on its first occurrence.
  • eventually to hit the Florida Panhandle approximately three to four days in the future. - three to four days later.
  • Immediately after the storm entered the Gulf of Mexico, the low wind shear, good upper-level outflow, and the warm sea surface temperatures of the Gulf Loop Current caused Katrina to start intensifying rapidly.
  • but led to an almost doubling in radius of the storm. - but almost doubled the storm radius.
  • The center of Katrina was about 180 mi (290 km) away from the mouth of the Mississippi River, but tropical storm-force winds extended 230 statute miles (370 km) away from the center of the storm, and hurricane-force winds extended about 105 miles (170 km) away.
  • Overnight on August 29, and into that morning, - into the next morning? August 30 ?
  • At landfall, hurricane-force winds extended outward 120 miles (190 km) from the center and the storm's central pressure was 920 mbar. (Similar in many places - isn't the "outward" implied, redundant?)
  • The other half of Katrina broke off in the eastern part of the Appalachians, primarily leading to a significant tornado outbreak in

Sorry about that

I wasn't aware that the revert I did was actually correct, I just saw that the date was listed like that in previous versions, so I just assumed that was wrong. My bad. Anyway, thanks for reverting back to the correct version. Have a pleasant evening. Kyra~(talk) 23:49, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi Titoxd,

ProQuest

I'm not sure what the proper procedure is, but when I use ProQuest I just assume that the database is accurate and cite the article as if I had seen a hard copy. I feel this is justified especially for stuff in the Historical NYT database, since all the articles are scanned copies of what appeared in the newspaper. Probably the same can be assumed for other databases, but you could also just put a parenthetical note saying which database it came from. --Spangineer (háblame) 05:59, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Batesville, Louisiana

I have noticed when you closed the above AfD, you did not remove the category template, "REMOVE THIS TEMPLATE WHEN CLOSING THIS AfD". By deleting this when closing it pulls the discussion out of the category. I have deleted it from this discussion, but if you could review any other closures you have done recently and remove the tag from them it would be greatly appreicated. This is a fairly recent change. The guideline is at WP:AFDC. I have been going through the listing in each of the categories CAT:AFD and removing the tag from pages that are closed and adding the approriate category code for those in the uncatagorised group. Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #5

Number 5, October 1, 2006

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. The WikiProject has its own IRC channel.

"TD's should be bolded, as they are the impetus of every storm, weak or strong."

Storm of the month

Hurricane Ioke at peak strength
Hurricane Ioke at peak strength

Hurricane Ioke is the most intense hurricane on record in the Central Pacific. After forming on August 19 to the south of Hawaii, Ioke moved to the northwest and hit Johnston Atoll as a Category 2 hurricane. It strengthened further as it moved to the west, reaching Category 5 strength on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale three times, twice in the Central Pacific and once in the Western Pacific. After the storm entered the Western Pacific it directly hit Wake Island. The storm finally became extratropical on September 7 but its extratropical remnants affected Alaska. Overall damage from Hurricane Ioke was light.

Other tropical cyclone activity

  • 4 hurricanes formed in the Atlantic: Hurricane Florence, Hurricane Gordon, Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Isaac. Florence affected Bermuda and Newfoundland, and Gordon had effects in the Azores and Europe. Isaac is currently forecast to affect Newfoundland as an extratropical storm.
  • The east Pacific saw three hurricanes and a tropical storm develop. Hurricane John and Hurricane Lane were both major hurricanes which hit Mexico, whilst Hurricane Kristy and Tropical Storm Miriam stayed clear of land. In addition, two tropical depressions formed in the Central Pacific.
  • There were 4 typhoons in west Pacific during September. Typhoon Shanshan, Typhoon Yagi and Typhoon Xangsane formed in the west Pacific and Typhoon Ioke entered the basin from the east. Shanshan killed at least 9 people in Japan and Typhoon Xangsane, which is still active, killed at least 72 in the Philippines.
  • Two tropical cyclones formed in the North Indian Ocean during September. Severe Cyclonic Storm Mukda formed in the Arabian Sea but did not affect land and Tropical Cyclone 05B formed in the Bay of Bengal before making landfall in India. However, the deadliest tropical system of September was a depression in the Bay of Bengal that killed more than 170 people in Bangladesh.

The September member of the month is Thegreatdr, David Roth. David Roth is a meteorologist at the wpc, who as part of his work there is producing Tropical Cyclone Rainfall Data. Dozens of the maps he has created are used in Misplaced Pages articles. He has produced a number of valuable articles to the project such as tropical cyclone rainfall climatology and Atlantic hurricane reanalysis, and significantly expanded several seasonal articles such as 1982 Pacific hurricane season.

Do you think you can help me out for the 1999-00 Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season article, please? I have put up heaps of comments in the assessment page, but no one's responding back. RaNdOm26 10:27, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Re: 1933

Thanks for the needed copyedit. I got the ref (HPC), and to be safe I expanded all of them. As for the 5,000, that number is only the number of dead or injured, at least according to what the newspaper article said. Damn, I thought someone had got the ref for Hurdat. Oh well, I just did it. Set nominations for Version 0.5

Hi Tito, I hope you're doing well. I'd like to close the set nomination discussions, so I'm asking for your votes on these if you have time. With Misplaced Pages:Version 0.5 Set Nominations/Genetic disorders I'm the only person who has commented/debated recently, and I noticed you commented back in the summer on this when the consensus was to hold till later. Can you cast your vote on this set? The other three sets seem to have at least 2-3 people in rough agreement, but if you have time your comments on those would be welcome as well. Thanks, Walkerma 04:19, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Re: Misplaced Pages:One featured article per quarter

Heh, that's pretty interesting, thanks. I would consider doing it, but due to my ADD I can't seem to predict which articles I'm going to do. Whenever I do, I get sidetracked and work on something else :) I did too many large projects earlier in the year that now I'd rather do good articles for low-impact storms. I'm currently checking for sources, but for the balloon festival it may only be in French due to the fact the Citizen or the Sun may not keep everything, I'm putting it mention of the festival because it's one of the most important of its kind across North America and the world and during that Sources should be there within the next hour --JForget 20:56, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

The articles have vanished, there's none to be found, so the Canada part will go, but will it keep in the infobox --JForget 21:04, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Fabian pic

Would the picture from this newspaper be usable for the Fabian article? Sure, it's pretty low-res, but it's about the only damage pic I can find that would be useable. Would cropping the damaged house be fair use or PD as well, or unusable due to copyright (AP). Hope you can help :) Hurricanehink (talk) 02:19, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

Edit Count and Edit Counters

Thank you for removing the section about Edit Counters in the Edit Count article. The two articles were fundamentally different and users creating edit tools were advertising them on the Edit Count article rather than the Edit Counters article. Let's hope the merge request and clean up of the articles stays. Thanks again. Mkdw 22:10, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Edit_count is in the Misplaced Pages Encyclopedia as labelled on the top. The article is categorized as an article pertaining to Misplaced Pages and basically discusses the definition, purpose, and usages of Edit Counts with in the website of Misplaced Pages. Conversely, Misplaced Pages:WikiProject_edit_counters is a very loosely created article about Misplaced Pages's tools for edit counting and their development. It contains a lot of information from the Edit Count article but primarily should be about Edit Counters as a tool and how people are using those tools pertaining to Edit Counts. The articles require quite a bit of cleaning up but if you look closely enough, they are dissimilar topics of review and discussion. Webster's dictionary has a good section about the development of closely linked but disparate articles that is very applicable here and I would like to see the articles cleaned up and separated than merged. Just my opinion about references. Mkdw 22:18, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Maybe I am missing something. If you're refering to namespaces. How does Misplaced Pages:Edit_count fit under User talk namespace? Namespaces 1, 3, 5, and 7 are all talk pages more specifically Namespace 3 as the User Talk. Now Misplaced Pages:Edit_count is under the Namespace 4 and can be found in its category . I was talking more to the point that the article reads as an encyclopedic article, whether a part of Misplaced Pages or not, and the WikiProject Edit Counters relates to the development of Misplaced Pages Tools. I don't see how they are similar enough to warrent one being linked to the other without making it a generalization. An example would be Grapes and Grape Pickers. One relates to the other, but could, and would discuss them separately. Especially if there is a movement to keep Edit Counts away from the basis of adminship. I don't see the purpose of discussing that on the same page as where people are discussing technical notes or where people are reviewing. 22:39, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

I agree, and what I am reading are two very 'project pages' then, being merged when they have different discussions going on. If you read the Edit Count discussion, enough people for a six month old argument have said they are different subjects. The changes I am talking about are simply removing the first paragraph from WikiProject: Edit Counters as the second paragraph directly contradicts the purpose of the article. If people are indeed trying to do something together, then we shouldn't be mixed two groups of people trying to do two different things. I don't even see the relevence of discussing adminship in a place of tool development. Mkdw 22:50, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

We've left the topic about whether they are articles or not. They're not and if you need me to say it, then I am. Let's move on. The topic sentence, which is acting as the secondary thesis statement to the whole project states:

"Our goal is to organize and coordinate the various efforts at creating edit counters and statistics tools. Our primary purpose is to give Wikipedians more tools at analyzing their own edits and others' edits; while editcountitis may be fatal, we primarily strive to offer another alternative and viewpoint at one's contributions"

To coordinate the various efforts at creating edit counters. I fail to see the pages responsibility or usage in its first thesis: Edit counts are a quick way of measuring a Wikipedian's experience in the Misplaced Pages community.

Edit Counts has its own topic, it talks about its use in adminship. Why not keep the articles separate? One about tools the other about how edit counts are used? Mkdw 23:03, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Edit Counts had a good way of linking the two articles. "See main project at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject edit counters for more info and a list of available edit counters." Why not including a new section under WikiProject's mission statement briefly describing the usages of Edit Counters for adminship and the various controversies and then providing some related links and saying more information can be found etc. etc. ?? At the least restore the mission statement to the top of the page. It's awkward having it as the third paragraph and being displaced by an unrelated defintion. Mkdw

I made a quick change, let me know if it works. Mkdw 23:15, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Is there a way to make semi-auto edits on a list of articles that can be fed to a program or script of some sort? I am inquiring about this because I have recently stumbled across a whole mess of stub articles that have no references or sources, and it would definately save a whole lot of time if it were possible to include an unreferenced tag at the top of the article and have the edit be saved, though confirming it didn't break any layouts or anything beforehand, of course.. If not, the old-fashioned method still works, would just take longer. --Kyra~(talk) 22:07, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Argh, fewer than the required 500 mainspace edits necessary for the registration to be approved. Guess it's more Alt+X'ing for fixing more pages. Anyway, I shall keep AWB in mind for the future. Many thanks for the suggestion. --Kyra~(talk) 22:50, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

More merging of information from tropical cyclone into tropical cyclogenesis

Another attempt has been made to include information from the tropical cyclone article into tropical cyclogenesis. I reformatted the unusual formation section, fixed a reference, and moved it over. It makes tropical cyclogenesis a more complete article (I think). Thegreatdr 21:34, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Seasonal infoboxen

Hey Tito, I can't figure out the coding for the {{infobox hurricane season}} and how to extend it. I'm nearing the completion of my pet project and I have a seasonal track map prepared (not uploaded yet though). However, there is no {{infobox typhoon season}} corresponding to {{infobox typhoon season nopic}} for me to swap over to - so I can't insert it into the article yet. As these templates are a bit confusing I was wondering if you could cook up a working template here? In the longer term, I think we ought to work towards having just the one infobox templates for individual TC seasons, in any basin - and use a lot of voodoo to make it the jobs of all the other ones.--Nilfanion (talk) 23:36, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #6

Number 6, November 5, 2006

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. The WikiProject has its own IRC channel.

"THIS IS THE LAST PUBLIC ADVISORY ISSUED ON THIS USER UNLESS REGENERATION OCCURS"

Storm of the month

Xangsane to the east of the Philippines
Xangsane to the east of the Philippines

Typhoon Xangsane, known as Typhoon Milenyo in the Philippines was a destructive typhoon that affected the Philippines and Indochina. The storm caused severe flooding and landslides in the regions it affected and was responsible for at least 279 deaths and $747 million (USD) in damage, mostly in the Philippines and Vietnam. Xangsane formed to the east of the Philippines and rapidly intensified, striking Samar Island as a Category 4 typhoon. It weakened over the Philippines, but again reached Category 4 strength in the South China Sea. After its landfall in Vietnam, the typhoon dissipated, with its remnant crossing Indochina and entering the Bay of Bengal.

Other tropical cyclone activity

  • Hurricane Isaac, which formed in September, hit Newfoundland with minimal effects on October 2. It was the only Atlantic storm in October.
  • One hurricane, Hurricane Paul, formed in the eastern Pacific and hit Mexico. There were also two tropical storms, Norman and Olivia, and two tropical depressions in the basin.
  • In addition to Typhoon Xangsane, two further typhoons and two tropical storms developed in the west Pacific. Typhoon Soulik and Tropical Storms Bebinca and Rumbia both stayed clear of land, whilst Typhoon Cimaron hit the Philippines killing at least 19 people there, before it dissipated in the South China Sea.
  • The North Indian Ocean saw one storm, Cyclonic Storm Ogni form in the Bay of Bengal.
  • The 2006-2007 Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season got underway, with Tropical Cyclone Xavier forming to the west of Fiji. There were two further tropical depressions in the South Pacific and a tropical disturbance in the South Indian Ocean.

Tropical cyclone scales

The various agencies which report on tropical cyclones use a variety of different scales to measure the storms strength. The most familiar of these is the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale and this is the de facto standard in the project and should be used everywhere. However, as it is only official in the Atlantic and East Pacific, other local scales should be used when discussing storms in other regions and given primacy over the Saffir-Simpson Scale. The Saffir-Simpson scale is based on 1-minute averages, but other scales are generally based upon 10-minute averages, which are approximately 15% lower.

This table provides a useful-at-a-glance comparison of the various scales currently in use. Further complications arise due to the fact different agencies obtain different estimates for the same storm at the same time, so be careful to use the most appropriate source agency.

Deletion of old usernames

Hey there, I saw that you were in discussion with the devs, here, about the deletion of old usernames policy. I am a bit taken aback by Brion's response, and was wondering if there is any recourse from here? This policy had amazing support behind it, and while I realize we are beholden to the devs, I find it a bit distasteful that it was rejected with barely any discussion or explanation for why. --Wolf530 (talk) 16:58, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Misplaced Pages policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Misplaced Pages because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Misplaced Pages easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Misplaced Pages. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Misplaced Pages.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Misplaced Pages policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Misplaced Pages is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Template:GA-Class Full-protection

I noticed you protected the template Template:GA-Class along with the other quality-scale indicators. I personally feel this is a mistake, since although it is a "high risk" template (included on hundreds of thousands of articles), it is also quite hidden from access. To know it exists you would have to know quite well how to dissect templates and inclusions, something that is above 99.9% of vandals (if not 100%). Can I ask that you revert the full protection to semi-protection? I am not an administrator and would like to tweak the background color that is used to indicated Good Articles. -- Renesis (talk) 22:31, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Is full-protection really the appropriate action to take for concerns about server load or the page being edited too many times? That would imply that a user who is not an administrator but doesn't wish to do Misplaced Pages any harm is either (A) not as smart as the average administrator, or (B) doesn't care about the good of Misplaced Pages as much as an administrator would. Neither are valid assumptions, and neither fits in with Misplaced Pages's policy of allowing editing by anyone. A position like that is quite offensive to those editors who truly want to improve Misplaced Pages, have spent countless hours contributing and have years of experience with how Misplaced Pages works, but are not administrators. A simple notice in the source would serve the same purpose for these editors. For your information, I simply want to change the shade of green slightly to not conflict as much with the background of the WPBiography template. I have no problem with consulting the Assessment team, but didn't feel it was necessary for such a small change. I did look into how the current colors were decided on before I decided to try to change the color as well. -- Renesis (talk) 23:14, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Ok, that makes sense. I'll just propose the change at the location you suggested. Thanks. -- Renesis (talk) 23:22, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Ouch. Anyway, I added my proposal. I saw you questioned the colors before - would you like to post your thoughts? New GA Green proposal. -- Renesis (talk) 23:35, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Consultation regarding genealogy policy in Misplaced Pages

Please Titoxd, could you take a look to this consultation that I have started in Misplaced Pages. Someone recommended to write to you, since your are fluency in both languages and write in both English and Spanish Misplaced Pages. I would really appreciate your help.--Tasc1 05:30, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Dear colleagues of Misplaced Pages: Is there any policy in Misplaced Pages prohibiting a person to write the history/biography of his own family and surname? (genealogy) (not his own history, CV, work, etc, but of his family, surname, noteworthy members, and ancestors). I am asking this since in Misplaced Pages in Spanish I am being severely criticized (almost humiliated) for that reason, in a call to delete my work (and now, they are after all the work that I wrote, including an article regarding Academic freedom (Spanish)). I would prefer not to have the same very unpleasant experience again; for this reason, I prefer to ask first. Few minutes ago, I was blocked in the Misplaced Pages (Spanish)(page Santa Coloma (apellido) (Spanish), User Tasc), by a sysop that was a part in the conflict (directly involved in the procedure to delete the page and clearly manifesting that he disliked the article when he voted; so, he was a Judge, a part interested in the result, and a executioner, at the same time). And he blocked my account just because I was complaining regarding an user involved in the discussion, that abusing of the anonymous condition of his name, started to insult myself (real name) and my family with adjectives of any kind, instead of analyzing the content of the article to improve it. And these discussions are public, as you know. Perhaps the main argument that they use is that, since I am writing regarding my ancestors, this is a vanity page, own research (although it has multiple references, perhaps more than any other article in wikipedia), etc. These accusations are vague and broadly made. When I ask for precisions as to indicate exactly in which paragraph and lines they find the supposed violations to the Misplaced Pages policies, I got no specific answers. I have already deleted almost 50% of the article, and they insist with deletion of the entire article, with general arguments, without being explicit.
We do not have in wikipedia in Spanish an instance to appeal the decisions of any sysop yet. So, these potential violations to academic freedom a freedom of speech are unavoidable right now in our Spanish Misplaced Pages. I would really appreciate any feedback in this issue. Regards, --Tasc1 04:29, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
It sounds like a conflict of interest to write an article about your own family. It is also probably original research unless your family history has been extensively published or written about in notable, reliable sources. Finally, academic freedom and freedom of speech are not policies in Misplaced Pages. They're certainly good ideas but they're not necessarily directly applicable in an encyclopedia. Our core policies are verifiability, neutral point of view, and no original research. As to the specifics of your situation, I'm sorry that I can't offer any specific comments or suggestions as my Spanish is quite bad. --ElKevbo 04:35, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
I personally don't think it's a conflict of interest, as long as it's a notable family (on this Misplaced Pages, we're as concerned with notability as much as anything). You will probably be OK, as long as you provide sources, preferrably verifiable ones that exist on the internet (providing it from a geneological paper only available to you won't do much help). Also, because I don't have time to read up on your situation, I can't say definitely that there won't be issues (you may be familiar with the saying, "the first person to come along always sounds right, until you hear his adversary"). Patstuart(talk)(contribs) 04:40, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Agreed - it may or may not be a conflict of interest. I think there's a greater chance in this case but it's certainly not inevitable. --ElKevbo 04:49, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

The first in my family came in 1786, and he was at the time the most important merchant in the Rio de la Plata (Gaspar de Santa Coloma). There is a book from a recognized biographer, expert in history, regarding his memories (Enrique de Gandía, in "Buenos Aires Colonial"). Even the Residential hose for the President was donated by members of my family. And the history extends from the independence war (Colonel Brandsen and others) to the fait for the Reconquest from the morocco’s in Spain, by the year 844. Also, Bonifusus de Sancta Columba (all version of the last name), was the first person in having a Patent granted (XIII century) by Henry III. And the musician Sainte Colombe of France, is very will know. I could continue for pages, but it is not the issue here. Thanks a lot for the fit back. Perhaps I should write it in English (probably there are still some "de Sancta Columba" in UK), but I would like to avoid the same problem and have to erase everything after so much work. In addition, I would need your help fox to improve the grammar and style, if you are willing to help in such a long history, that even is related to Nessie and Arthur (indirectly). Kind regards, Tomás Santa Coloma.--Tasc1 05:08, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Thank you ElKevbo for your rapid and kind response. Yes, it can be a conflict of interest. But who can right a genealogy article better than a person who knows his family history with details? Actually, the article references several books, articles and also pages in Internet. So, I think that the issue should not be if I am a relative of any personality, but how objective I was in writing about them. In other words, which is important is if I can complain objectively with the policies of neutral point of view and original research. Of course, some parts were difficult, because in my situation is sometimes hard to be objective. But if the article has some parts that might not be justified, they can always be corrected. From my modest point of view, there is no reason to erase the entire work. Don’t you agree?

Besides, the attitude of the sysop, being a Judge, a person with interest in the results, also indicating that he dislike the work, and then blocking myself in the middle of the voting process, is at least a non-ethical behavior (I might be wrong, of course). Do you know if Misplaced Pages has some appeal instance that can act over Wikipedias in other languages when the administrators abuse of they power? I would really appreciate any help in this issue. I worked very hard in that page (197 kb and now I was forced to reduce it to 120 kb). Something else, one administrator said that independently of the results of the voting process, he will erase the page anyway, arguing that it does not complain with the wiki policies (without specifying which paragraphs do not). Regards. --Tasc1 04:53, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Is it perhaps an issue of noteability? I can imagine that other users may nominate or support deleting a geneological article if the family is perceived not to be noteable. If that is the case, then the best way to answer that challenge is with reliable, published sources. Maybe it would be a good idea for you to copy the article into Talk space and work on it there for a while. Once it's in really good shape with lots of fantastic references you might be in a better position to update the article with your new version. --ElKevbo 05:03, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
(after edit conflicts) As Kev and Pat suggest, one's writing an autobiography or biography of a relative here is generally disfavored (toward which, see, e.g., WP:AUTO and WP:COI), principally because it is not unlikely that one, in writing apropos of him/herself or of an individual or group with whom or which he/she is intimately familiar, might (especially avolitionally) contravene our policies and produce an article that suffers encyclopedic deficencies. There are, to be sure, editors who have created or edited articles about themselves or members of their families and done so quite well and successfully, so WP:AUTO and WP:COI are not really construed here as ex ante proscriptions; they do, though, counsel that autobiographical editing be avoided, that an autobiographical editor review his/her work stringently in order to ensure that it well comports with encyclopedic standards, and that he/she refrain from editing autobiographically where another editor has expressed concern about his/her introducing information that is unencyclopedic. In general, I think it might safely be said that if edits properly an article about himself or a family member, the fact of his being (or being related to) the subject will not be plain. All that, though, as you seem well to appreciate, is relative to the English Misplaced Pages. Whilst each Misplaced Pages maintains standards as regards content and whilst those standards are often similar across languages, the intricacies of any single Misplaced Pages may be qualitatively different from those here. You might have success querying one or more of the editors listed at Category:Contributors to the Spanish Misplaced Pages, who are ostensibly acquainted with policies at both Wikipedias; Buchanan-Hermit and Titoxd, to name two, are admins here who are also active on the Spanish language version. Joe 05:15, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Titoxd, that was a great idea. Who can be in a better position than someone that is familiar with both wikipedias. I’ll try to contact them. Thanks, regards, Tomás.

ElKevbo, I am doing something like this in the main page, indicating in an index the progress in the corrections, section by section. But now that I was blocked for one day, it is really discouraging to know that one of the Administrators said that he will erase the article no matter what. Unbelievable to me.--Tasc1 05:19, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Template:Class parameter

Hi Tito. Something strange is going on with {{Class parameter}} I think, as there is some strange code at the bottom which should only show up in <includeonly> tags. I'd fix it myself, but I am not sure I would do the right thing. Could you take a look? Thanks! You can reply here if you have comments. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 16:17, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Done. The {{#switch}} in the template itself was not within a <includeonly> tag, so I added one more pair, which fixed it. I also changed the template a little bit so it wouldn't use nested inclusion tags, while I was at it. If there's any breakage, let me know. Titoxd 18:43, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

The reason I reverted was because it was added by Nathannoblet, who I think intended to use it in Misplaced Pages Signpost work. If this is an internal thing, feel free to revert, but I'm still under the impression that this was his doing. Ral315 (talk) 01:22, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

I don't mind doing something like that, but Nathannoblet should not be involved in it; his articles were of poor quality and he filed an RFM against me for refusing to publish them. Ral315 (talk) 01:34, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

From Talk:Mexico

Titoxd, like I said in the discussion, I am an admin at another wikipedia , not at this wikipedia, just in case you didn't read my comment correctly and were accusing me of not having the "sysop". And at least on our wiki, admins cannot see the IPs of registered users but upon request. If that is not the case in this wiki, I would very much appreciate if you could direct me to the appropriate meta page to request that feature for our wiki. Now, if you had followed the debate you would have realized that we have been telling Alex, ever since the beginning, that there is no proof of his statement; and that the only quantitative measurement for standard of living is the HDI (which in itself is debatable) and it would prove him wrong, since Argentina's HDI is higher than that of Mexico. Therefore, the sentence had to go, and I don't think a consensus has to be reached for that, but I asked Diegou to wait for Alex to respond before making any changes so that he could provide a verifiable source for his claim. His repeated reversions to his previous statements while ignoring the debate (except for accusing me of sockpuppetry) do constitute if not vandalism (I might have exaggerated) at least a violation of basic etiquette. --Alonso 00:34, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

I apologize if my accusation of vandalism was out of line, and for the tone of my comments. I guess after having invited him to participate constructively in the debate for a week I had finally run out of patience, especially after his unfounded accusation. Given his recent behavior, if know that if I edit the controversial statement in the article he would most surely revert it again, and I don't think we will ever get his "approval". --Alonso 00:57, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Katrina source

Hey, I tried to add, ref name="KatrinaTCR" to the 902 mbar minimum pressure value in the infobox and the template screwed up. Could you please add this citation to the infobox, it would avoid confusion. Alan.ca 04:49, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Your recent block to me

Sorry for my recent vandalism. I didn't realize it would be so harmful. From now on, I will make some constructive edits rather than just joking around. Once again, sorry.

I added a did you know for the new tropical cyclone observation article, and then noticed you had as well. =) Which of our two entries do you think would be more interesting as a DYK? Thegreatdr 15:41, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Admin coaching?

Hi Titoxd. I see you were paired with User:Quentin Smith for admin coaching. Did that ever get off the ground? I have asked him if he is still interested in coaching. If not, would you like a new student? Please let me know. Thanks. --Fang Aili 18:10, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

I'd say if he doesn't appear in the next few weeks, perhaps we could give you a new student. There's a waiting list. --Fang Aili 14:12, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Assessments section of project Guide

As the writer of the section, I thank you for the copyediting. I've never been that good a writer. The section you "nuked" was admittedly one that has never been tried to my knowledge. However, I think that I was trying to get across a hypothetical "best practice" which has never actually been tried yet. Of course, there is a very real chance it never will be tried, so it might be pointless to have it listed then. Anyway, thanks for cleaning up my often overlong run-on sentences and frequently hard-to-follow constructions. I just can't seem to get rid of them. I do try, though. Hello! You commented that design I "looks bad as a sister project thumbnail." I assume that you're referring to the thumbnail at the top of the page, but that's only an auto-scaled version. The actual sister project icon would look more like this:

That's just a quick example. With a bit of effort, it would look better. —David Levy 14:07, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

1970 Bhola cyclone

Hi Tito,

I had cause to look at 1970 Bhola cyclone in Bangladesh recently and noticed

  • It "has the highest death toll of any deadliest known tropical cyclone of all time."
  • The poor response by the West Pakistan govt. led to a civil war that culminated in the formation of independent Bangladesh. (George Bush - take heed!)

These credentials lead me to think this should be a pretty key article for the tropical cyclones project, yet it is listed as only Start-class! Could you guys take a look at it? We need to make sure that our good tropical cyclones articles aren't simply a list of recent US hurricanes....

Hope you're doing well, I'm swamped with grading at the moment. Back on Misplaced Pages again soon. Walkerma 19:36, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Oh, Happy Birthday as well! Walkerma 19:38, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Empty summary warnings and edit conflicts

I can't reproduce the problem I told you about in IRC. Maybe what I was experiencing were cache problems or something like that (or there was really a bug and now it's fixed). Here is one of the last times I remember it happening: trying to do this, I did this. If you think there can still be a bug, and can think of a series of tests to find it, I'll perform them with the help of my newly created sockpuppet. Greetings. --Angus 16:09, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #7

Number 7, December 22, 2006

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. This shortened late issue covers just global tropical cyclone activity in November, to prevent the next newsletter from being too large.

Tropical cyclone activity

  • One hurricane, Hurricane Sergio, formed in the eastern Pacific. Sergio was the longest lasting November Pacific hurricane recorded. Two other tropical cyclones, Tropical Storm Rosa and a tropical depression formed in the basin. None of the systems affected land.
  • An unusual extratropical cyclone developed in the northern central Pacific, resembling a subtropical cyclone at its peak.
  • A total of three typhoons formed in the western Pacific, and all the storms followed a similar track across the Philippines. Typhoon Cimaron formed at the end of October and lasted into November, killing 19 people. Typhoon Chebi existed during the middle of the month and was the weakest of the three causing minor damages. The most devastating storm of the month, Typhoon Durian hit the Philippines on November 30, killing at least 720 people in the island nation.
  • Two named cyclones developed in the Southern Hemisphere, Tropical Cyclone Yani in the South Pacific and Moderate Tropical Storm Anita in the Southwest Indian Ocean. Two unnamed depression also formed in the South Pacific. None of these storms affected land.

Editorial

The lateness of this edition is due to me being on an wikibreak and no-one taking up the slack. My wikibreak was the result of a lightning strike damaging my internet connection and frying my router, and the time taken for the replacement to arrive. As this issue is almost 3 weeks later than planned, only the monthly cyclone activity for November has been included. The next letter will be produced for January 7, 2006 and will be larger than normal to cover both month's Misplaced Pages news and December's tropical activity. There will be no Member or Storm of the month in January, to reduce the length; and the newsletter will return to normal in February.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:59, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

AWB Access

Would you mind specifying exactly what edits you are referring to and explaining exactly what I am doing wrong? I have had no warning that I have been misusing the tool and I'm not actually using it for anything other then list sorting - I'm making manual judgements in more or less every case. May I ask what drew your attention to this? --Spartaz 09:14, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Please see my comments on the talk page. I'm not using AWB for anything other than list sorting and I don't understand what a regex is. The complaints do not specify what edits have been incorrect and I think that its not fair to block my work without first explaining to me exactly what the problem is. Its not controversial to remove copyvios from external links. ps. why does my comment appear at the top of your talk page? I pressed the plus button and it should appear at the bottom. Were you aware the J.smith is an admin?--Spartaz 09:33, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
Ummmm I haven't used AWB in more then a week. What is going on? ---J.S 17:03, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
No problem. Everything is sorted out now I guess. ---J.S 00:32, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

WP:NOT, blocking, and evasion, oh my!

Forgive the title, feeling a little playful. Anyway, I would like to inquire what an editor should od if they beleive they have found a user who has been blocked (using this edit as an example), and then seemingly returns. The edits do match, as they are revertions. At this point, I am beginning to beleive the user is using the account to evade the block and reinsert the edit he apparently desperately wants included.

I have tried to explain to the IP user (and most likely the registered user) that the information in the form they are submitting it is not in line with WP:NOT, an official policy. It still had no effect, and the person continued their actions

The person's account (User talk:Ullr Siffson/(contribs)) appears to be a single purpose account used solely for this purpose. At the moment my tension in this matter is getting a little too high, and I am not sure why. Therefore, I wish to inquire what the proper course of action in this situation is. I am going to guess a WP:RFCU might be needed to link the user to the IP and therefore the block evasion if that is the case, but I don't want to jump to any conclusions. As of now, I have left the Alpental article alone for the moment with his edit on top, and I am going to take a day off from editing to cool off. I wish you a pleasant day, Titoxd. Connection problems

I saw your question on Village pump (technical) - beginning the evening of 22 December, morning of 23 December, I couldn't get anything to load on Misplaced Pages, although I had no problem with any other website. I turned off my firewall, and was fine. Installed a new firewall, end of problem - so I guess Misplaced Pages made a change in something the night of the 22nd that couldn't get past my firewall (I hadn't changed anything). Thought I'd mention it in case your problems started about the same time as mine did. Sandy (Talk) 03:10, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Maths and canes

Hey, I think we need to sit down and think about this, hopefully and prevent a lame war (though to late for that no? ;)). 130 is silly for Nora (cat 3 for a cat 4 storm) and 135 is incorrect in any mathematical sense. The only resolution I can think of that preserves mathematical integrity here and avoids the silliness is to change project-wide to the nearest unit as opposed to the nearest 5. I can't think of another way out unfortunately, how about you? Play talk-tag or chat on IRC (before 0100 UTC) - your choice.--Nilfanion (talk) 22:38, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, automated stuff is risky. In the more general sense this problem still exists though. 115 knots is what the data says. Nowhere is the mph figure given, but the NHC always rounds to 5 mph. I'm looking in the public advisory archive to see how the NHC handled the mph numbers on a 115-kt forecast point, that should give us an insight. However we are fundamentally screwed here. For 115 kts, 135 mph is flat wrong, and be liable to "correction" by someone with 0 knowledge of this issue but a sense for numbers, 130 mph isn't Cat 4 but is the correct number to round to and 132 mph is too accurate (though its probably better than the other too at this moment)...--Nilfanion (talk) 22:50, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, in this Discussion on Rita the NHC says the winds are 115 kts; the corresponding PA says near 135 mph. This intermediate advisory on Katrina uses the same phrasing for the same strength (no corresponding discussion). There is a simple way around this for the purposes of articles actually: If we use 116 kts instead of 115, the output will round up to 135 and the km/h will stay the same. That saves needing to abandon calcs (which make things so much tidier). I'm not sure what to do about this though. Getting an answer out of the NHC on this is probably the only hope of resolution...--Nilfanion (talk) 23:05, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

MacHack

Thanks for the delete. I'm trying to get MacHack (chess) to Mac Hack, and MacHack (conference) to MacHack. Can you do this? It seems relatively uncontroversial, but I'll explain further if need be. Picaroon 06:20, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Make it MacHack (convention) that I'm trying to get to MacHack. Picaroon 06:22, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Hmm... ok, I'll work on it. Titoxd 06:23, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
So sorry to put you through this, Titoxd. Now, Talk:Mac Hack (chess) needs to go to Talk:Mac Hack. And I think that's it. You have a belated thanks coming if I find no more moves needed! Picaroon 06:31, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Hehehe... well, I was double-checking that I hadn't left any talk page left behind while doing this... but it should be OK now. Titoxd 06:34, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks so very much. I'm sorry to have to put you thought all that moving. I'll check around for any double redirects. Again, thanks. Picaroon 06:35, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for picking up the Hurricane Katrina stuff

Changing subject slightly, was the last year (2006) a very quiet hurricane season? I don't remember seeing any hurricanes in the news over this side of the pond. Any reason why that would be? Are there people commenting on it or not? Maybe I should look at 2006 Atlantic hurricane season? :-) Carcharoth 04:58, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Ah. I'd half-guessed it was something like that. Carcharoth 05:01, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
